DearFriends,The secular New Year kicked off beautifully with another wonderful

performancebyJackWilliams&TheWaterlineBandaspartofourTreeofLifeCoffeehouseseries.OnJanuary18thweheldaSpecialShabbatservicehonoringthe life and legacy of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr.Most fortunately for us, wewere able to welcome Civil Rights Activist and Philanthropist, Samuel JayTenenbaum, to speak about his experiencemarchingwith Dr.Martin LutherKingJr.throughthestreetsofAtlantain1965.Samuel’sremarkswerefromtheheartandcarriedamessageofcourageandhopethatthereismuchworktobedone as we march towards fulfilling King’s vision of equality. Finally, onSaturday, January26th,ourownCOFTYboardcreated,constructed,and ledabeautifulmostly-farm-to-table Tu B’Shevat Seder. Between the specialmeal,theinspiringreadings,theprayers,andthemusic,theCOFTYboardcraftedanincredibleeveningincelebrationofcreationthatwewon’tsoonforget.

Even though Family Shabbaton did not take off this year asexpected, the foundation is laid for suchaprogramtohappen infuture years. However, I wanted to extend ahuge thank you toRabbi Leah and Adam Schor for hosting a camp-fire dinner ands’mores havdalah for the families who signed up.While a full day’s get-away would have been reallynice, we still treasured some quality time togetherandgottosavorShabbatinthegreatOutdoors.

YouwillsoonbeseeingflyersandinformationeverywhereaboutourspringcampaignforJewishWomen’sBreastHealth.Wehaverenamedourkickoffevent“BrunchfortheBattle”tounderscoretheseriousnatureofthischallenge.WehavealsomovedtheeventtoFebruary24duetoaspeakerconflict.OurspeakerwillbeWhitneyDobek,ageneticcounselorfromUSCHealth,whowilldiscussthegeneticlinkbetweenwomenofAshkenazicheritageandvulnerabilitytobreastcancer.Whitneywillansweryourreal-lifequestionsincluding“Whatisgeneticscreening?”“Whoshouldgettested?”“IfI’mpositive,whataremyoptions?”WeareinvitingalloftheladiesintheMidlandsJewishCommunitytothisvitalandinformativeevent!ThenonMay21thePalmettoHealthMobileMammogramUnitwillspendadayintheTOLparkinglot,sothatasmanyladiesaspossiblecanconvenientlygettheirmammogram.WewillbespendingthetimebetweentheFebruaryeventandMay21signingupladies–weareespeciallyencouragingthosewhoknowtheyshouldhavearegularmammogram,buthavebeenhesitantorjusttoobusy.Nodoctor’sorderisneeded!Proofofinsuranceisrequired.Inbetween,wealsohaveourannualWomen’sSederonApril23rd.Therearemoreeventsplanned,includingtheannualSisterhoodShabbatandpossiblyanotherLadiesNightOutwithdinneratalocalrestaurant,sostaytuned!
