The Future of Internet of Things (IoT)
Its been predicted that by the end of 2015 , there will be 25 billion devices connected to the internet
and the number will double by 2020. This makes an average of seven devices for each person
living on the earth. Information will be generated from machine to machine by robots and sensors,
machine to people via wearables, and people to people via social networks. Internet of things
includes natural or man made object that is embedded with sensors assigned an internet address
and that transfer data from sensors and devices to servers located in the cloud wirelessly.
The connected home includes digital door locks connected to the cloud that can be unlocked via
the internet, animal collars that enable owners to track their pets regardless of their whereabouts.
A connected refrigerator will sense the levels of grocery, re-order and get it delivered. A small
device in the bed side pillow will sense the sleep level and activate house lighting, coffee maker,
slow cooker or oven in a timely manner. Developments in the area of personal health are very
interesting. Today sensors monitor level of sugar constantly and administer insulin as required.
Tomorrow a connected toothbrush will send data to a dentist, on frequency, effective cleaning and
health of your teeth. Similarly other wearable and health related monitoring devices will be
connected to a health-care organization database. The organization will analyze a member's
activities and create individual incentives for each member to stay healthy. Businesses are
installing special devices to attract the customers carrying their apps in the smart phones. A
merchant will learn as soon as a consumer enters the store. The
In the future most of the products and services will be
connected to the internet. This connectivity constitutes a
major part of the Internet of Things. To educate our youth, I
would like to offer some of the basic denitions in this eld
The Internet of everything was initially introduced by Jeff
Chambers of Cisco Systems. It's a world-wide system of inter-
connected computers, networks, sensors, actuators, and
variety of devices utilizing internet protocol. This process holds
so much potential to change, how we live, feel and interact.
system will guide the customer towards desired area/products,
pricing and discounts. Connected wearables include Google
Glass, smart gear, Nike Fuel, cap, headset and related devices.
Tomorrow this will include clothing with embedded sensors,
gadgets to monitor the emotions, GPS equipped devices to
navigate and help location sensitive activations. I'll further
elaborate this area in the future issues. The Internet of things will
play an important role in how we live and conduct our business. It is
predicted that over the next 3-5 years, a huge transformation will
happen with the internet of things.
Tech News
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is looking to add mesh networking capabilities to the
Bluetooth Smart wireless technology, making it easier for devices to network together as part of the
Internet of Things (IoT).
Smartphones have swapped nearly every believable device, but computer scientists are teaching
them some new tricks. The scientists are familiarizing accelerometers, GPS chips, gyroscopes and
other sensors to make phones that can read a user's mood, eliminate passwords, protect nancial
transactions and more.
A new study nds that users on OKCupid and mobile-based Tinder aren't able to determine social
norms or effective match-making techniques on the services, so they use Reddit to learn tips about
online dating. Once there, they also nd ways that allow them to cheat the system to interact with
more potential dates.
The evolution of Parkinson's is monitored in real time through a new portable system, with results sent
to the doctor to improve the prescription of medication, developers report.

A brief history of Android:The Android platform is the product of the Open Handset Alliance, a group of organizations collaborating to build a better mobile
phone. The group, led by Google, includes mobile operators, device handset manufacturers, component manufacturers, software solution and platform
providers, and marketing companies. From a software development standpoint, Android sits smack in the middle of the open source world. The rst Android-
capable handset on the market was the G1 device manufactured by HTC and provisioned on T-Mobile. The device became available after almost a year of
speculation, where the only software development tools available were some incrementally improving SDK releases. As the G1 release date neared, the
Android team released SDK V1.0 and applications began surfacing for the new platform. To spur innovation, Google sponsored two rounds of "Android
Developer Challenges," where millions of dollars were given to top contest submissions. A few months after the G1, the Android Market was released, allowing
users to browse and download applications directly to their phones. Over about 18 months, a new mobile platform entered the public arena.Google is allowing
every Tom, Dick, and Harry to build Applications for Android by making it open source. All you need is to Setup your environment and have an introduction to
following languages.
Java - primary android development language
C++ - NDK for libraries, not apps
Python, bash, et. al. - Via the Scripting Environment
Google Fiber
What is it? Google Fiber is gigabit (or 1,000 megabits per second) Internet, supplied by ber-optic cables rather than the
century-old copper ones currently providing Internet at speeds of about 9.8 megabits per second.
Where is it? Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan. were the rst markets selected for Google Fiber implementation in
2010, chosen from nearly 1,100 community and 200,000 individual applicants. Since then, Google has begun work on
launching networks in Provo, Utah and Austin, Texas.
How is it set up? Google Fiber is powered by a hub-and-spoke cable system, according to information provided by the
company. A ber ring surrounds the city where the network is located. From that ring, bers branch inward and connect to ber
huts, where each strand passes through the devices that receive and transmit signals between your computer and the
Internet. From there, bers connect to telecom cabinets, which divide bers into small bundles that travel outward to clusters
of homes. At that point, cables pass through neighborhoods via telephone poles or underground and, ultimately, a single
strand connects to an individual home for Internet and television connections.
What happens if Nashville is selected? Google builds the primary infrastructure for cities selected, and then asks
"berhoods" -- groups of homes served by the same cabinet -- to reach a certain interest goal for their network to be "lit up."
Once that signup goal is reached, berhoods are activated and technicians visit users' homes to nalize Internet and
television connections. Google has three different plans available for customers, including combined television and Internet,
and two different Internet options.
How will Google Fiber change my service? Google cites a few benets from ber service, such as improved ability to share
bandwidth across multiple devices, less buffering when streaming HD video and the ability to download a digital movie in less
than two minutes.
What will it cost? In Kansas City, an Internet-only package costs $70 a month. A TV and Internet package goes for $120 per
month. Google also offers a free Internet package at "today's basic speeds" for customers willing to pay a one-time construction fee of $300.
What about businesses? Google Fiber as currently designed is primarily for individuals and homes, according to the company, but a small-business network
is being developed.
Is Google the only company offering this? No. In fact, shortly after Google announced Austin as the next site for Google Fiber, AT&T announced its own
plans to bring a similar high-speed network to the city, and Time Warner is undertaking a similar effort.
How does the US stack up in terms of gigabit Internet? Here's a by-the-numbers breakdown from Google of ber Internet as at stands today:
7.7 percent of home Internet connections in the US are ber
68 percent of Japanese connections are ber
62 percent of Korean connections are ber
9.8 Megabits per second, the average connection speed in the US, ranks No. 9 in the world
66 percent of Americans have connections slower than 10 megabits per second
Nearly 150 ber-to-the home projects and dozens of gigabit Internet projects are currently underway
Android Application Development
Environment: There are a lot of Environment tools free of cost and paid which have made a
developers life easy by assisting him in Developing Efcient and user-friendly applications.
One of the most commonly used Tool is Google's Android Studio and SDK Tools which are
dependent on each other and need to be installed simultaneously. Google has made it even
easier to set up environment by packing all the tools in to a single package called ADT Bundle. Just download the pack and run the tool.
Developing: After installation of environment comes the monster called developing. What you need here is your programming skills along with the knowledge of
above mentioned Languages especially JAVA. There are a lot of books that can be consulted for learning Android Development like Android Programming: The
Big Nerd Ranch Guide. Besides that you can also join online communities or forums like Stackoverow where you can always get answered to any question in
no time and can also answer others questions. Developed your Application? What Next? After you have developed your own application you can throw it to
the world by buying an account on Google Play. After paying for an account you will get a console where you can upload and publish you application. After
Publishing others will see your app on google play and can download it.
I think right now it's a battle for the mindshare of developers and for the mindshare of customers, and right now iPhone and Android are winning that battle.
