Getting married? Congratulations!
But before you take that walk down the aisle, there arelots of things that need to be done. Marriage licenses, invita-tions to pick out, gowns to purchase. It can be overwhelm-ing!
The following information may help organize the plethoraof details which accompany the planning of any wedding.Remember, there are several wedding planning softwarepackages you can buy and download onto your computer. This can really simplify things and keep things much moreorganized.
First off, have you publicly announced your engagement? Some couples enjoy sharing their news with the community. It’s easy. If you have had a photo taken, you can submit it toThe Virginia Gazette for publication. Your best bet is to visit
www.vagazette.com for an online form. Fees do apply. Some couples like to wait until they have set a date to
publish their engagement. It’s up to the individuals to decidewhich is best. And remember, you can also submit weddingnews after the big day!
Between 6-12 months from the date, you can start tothink about the wedding and reception. This is the time todecide whether you would like to have a church wedding, anoutdoor venue or a ceremony which takes place where thereception will be held.
There are many options, but the sooner you can book yourdate, the better! Setting the date and the time of your wed-ding sets the ball in motion. You also need to know yourbudget well in advance, that way, you aren’t surprised later on.
This is also the time to discuss what kind of food youwould like served. Line up a caterer as soon as possible,

especially if your date falls during a popular time of year. Youwill be able to meet with the company later on to samplefood items and get specific about the menu.
Here are some other things to consider during this timeframe:
• Talk to your minister or officiator of the wedding. Makesure he or she is available on the date you have set.
• Some churches require pre-marriage counseling. Makesure you contact your church office to find out the particu-lars.
• The Circuit Court has appointed the following peopleas marriage commissioners in our area:
Douglas L. Johnson, 229-2081 or e-mail [email protected]; James Gilley, e-mail [email protected] 564-1758; Eunice A. Fenwick, [email protected] or 253-2929; Robert (Bob)Hancock, e-mail [email protected] or 565-1797 andJoAnn McGrew, 565-3354.
• Decide on the size of your bridal party, and ask thosewho you wish to celebrate with you to take part. Thisincludes best man, maid of honor, groomsmen, bridesmaids, and junior members such as ring bearer or flower girl.
• Begin to shop for wedding rings. There are manyoptions. You can buy rings from a jewelry store, or you canhave them made especially for you and your partner. If youdecide to have them made, this would be the time to talk toan area jeweler about what you would like.
• This is also the time to discuss the financial aspects ofthe wedding. It is time to work out the financial aspects.Who is paying for what? Begin to work out a preliminaryguest list and gather names and addressed from both sides ofthe family.
• Have you decided on where you plan to go for yourhoneymoon? If it is an exotic locale, you should considerfinding out if special immunizations may be needed. Talk toa healthcare provider to get details.
• Register at a store for a bridal registry. There are manyarea stores to choose from, and registration is very easy.
• Decide on what kind of flowers you would like and starttalking to florists. This is an important aspect of the cele-bration and one that should be discussed in order to ensurethe colors/styles of flowers you want are readily available.
• If you want a wedding coordinator to help you organizethe event, this would be the time to line one up. They have

the latest scoop on trends, entertainment, flowers and food. • How about photography? Do you want a video of the
event as well as still pictures? Decide and call the photogra-pher you want as soon as you set the date. Same for videog-raphers. It’s a good idea to havea list of at least two or three incase your top choice is unavail-able.
• Decided on your weddingcake? Do you want it as elabo-rate as something featured on“Cake Boss” or something sim-pler? Inquire at your receptionlocation about cakes offeredthrough them or ask the catereror talk to an area bakery.
• How about music for yourwedding? You may have to meetwith the church music ministerto pick out music for the cere-mony. Some churches are spe-cific as to what kind of music isallowed during services. Begin tothink about the vocalist youwant to have sing at the ceremo-ny.
• Music is important at thereception as well. Make sure youhave an idea about whether youprefer live music or a disc jockey.Either way, choose and then book the entertainment as soonas possible. If you want favorite songs played, you should askahead whether the band or DJ has them in their repertoire.
As time gets closer, there are more details which need tobe taken care of. At 3-6 months out, you can begin gettinga lot more specific about things and make some definiteplans, including your honeymoon. This is the time to bookairplane flights, hotels and ensure your passport (if neces-sary) is in order.
This is also a good time to have a checkup from yourphysician. Many people become stressed out during thistime, so remember to keep up your normal exercise, eatingand sleeping routines.
• If you haven’t already, this is the time to order thebridal gown and the attire for your wedding party. Make sureall those who are in the party have been fitted properly fortheir suits/gowns.
• Order the wedding bands/rings.
• Edit the guest list and organize it.• Order wedding invitations, thank you notes and place
cards. Decide who will print the invitations and what youwant them to say. This is also a good time to think about
the wedding ceremony program andwhether or not you would like some-thing special printed to accompany it.These usually list wedding party, offici-ator, parents/grandparents of the brideand groom. They can be quite simpleor elaborate, depending on taste andbudget.
• Buy items including guest book, bridal favors and gifts for the weddingparty.
• Line up transportation to thewedding and reception.
• Choose who will do hair/makeupfor the big day.
• Finalize floral arrangements, wed-ding cake and food choices.
• Meet with or call videographerand photographer to discuss specifics.
As the date draws nearer, firm up allthe plans you have been making. It isnever a bad idea to confirm things sev-eral weeks before the event. That wayyou avoid stress and anythingunforseen.
About 2 months before the date, you should be thinking about sending out your wedding invi-tations. This is also the time to decide on your rehearsaldinner, where it will be and other particulars.
• You also need to get a wedding license. In Virginia they are obtained from the Clerk of Circuit
Court where the couple resides. In Williamsburg-James City, marriage licenses are issued at the courthouse located onMonticello Avenue.
Brides and grooms must be at least 16 years old to marry.People under that age must have written, notarized consentby a parent or legal guardian.
No blood tests or physical exams are needed for licenses. They cost $30 in cash. No checks are accepted.
Brides and grooms must apply together, and both mustbe present. You will have to show a driver’s license, militaryID or certified copy of a birth certificate. You will bothneed to know the full names of both parents, includingmother’s maiden names.

Once a license is given, there is no waiting period, butthey expire 60 days after issue. Marriages must take place inVirginia. Call 564-2242 for more information.
Other things to keep in mind as the date rapidlyapproaches:
• Finalize all the odds and ends that need to be done.Purchase ring pillow, bridal garters, toast goblets and otherwedding accessories.
• Make sure the cake has been ordered.• Organize bridal shower and other celebrations with
friends. • Try to keep stress under control by exercising, talking
with friends and getting help from family with details andplanning.

The dress of a lifetime
Most little girls dream of their weddingday and a beautiful gown. Some girls knowexactly what they want. Others just picturethemselves in something gorgeous.
Your dress, as well as your entire wedding, makes a state-ment. It is a reflection of your personality. Are you moretraditional, sophisticated, classic, chic, avant-garde? Do youprefer A-line, Princess Tulle cut, sheath? What type ofsleeve, if any, do you like? When and where will the eventtake place - winter, summer, morning, evening, on an island,
in a church? These are all important factors to considerwhen choosing a dress.
To get started, browse through bridal magazines anddesigner websites. Try to determine the style of dress you arelooking for, the designer, and your price range. After this isdone, it is time to enlist the aid of a professional bridal con-sultant at a bridal shop.
Williamsburg Bridal and Formal is a wonderful choice fora bride searching for that special dress. Voted One of theBest Bridal Shops in Virginia in 2010 by The Knot, thisfull-service salon can outfit the bride and her entire weddingparty from head to toe. “When a bride walks in our store, our main goal is to help her find the perfect dress. Our cus-tomer service and attention to detail is what draws many

brides to us,” says owner Ellen Evans. “We have selectionsto accommodate every bride. In addition to our local clien-tele, we service brides throughout Virginia and D.C., andwe’ve even helped clients from Australia and Scotland,”Evans continues. Be sure to call ahead and schedule anappointment.
Another option for today’s bride is a consignment bou-tique. Blush, located in Newport News, is an upscale bridalboutique offering the same experience and services for bridesas a traditional bridal shop. However, this type of storeoffers a different sort of merchandise. Recent brides aregiven the opportunity to consign their beautiful gowns.Brides-to-be have the opportunity to purchase stunninggowns at a fraction of the original cost.
Owner Holly Yakowsky keeps about 400 dresses in arange of styles and price points in stock. “I like to be ableto offer brides beautiful dresses that they wouldn’t have beenable to afford otherwise,” says Yakowsky. Though manydresses come from previous brides, Blush also offers gownsthat have never been worn. The gowns accepted must beprofessionally cleaned, in excellent condition, and less than3 years old.
Some brides shop online. These stores sell dresses hun-dreds of dollars less than those at a retail salon due to lowoverhead. You need to take a few precautions, however, before buying online. Be sure to shop in retail stores first sothat you can try on different sizes and styles. If you’re notcareful, you could end up spending double the money if youdon’t like your online purchase and you have to buy a newone. If this does happen, be sure to take your dress to aboutique like Blush in Newport News.
Choosing a wedding dress can and should be a very spe-cial experience. Don’t get in a hurry. Do some research. This will be one of the biggest and most special purchasesyou will make in your lifetime.

High up on every bride’s planning list isdesigning and choosing the flowers that willsurround her on that special day. While itmay not be easy to think about summerystems in the middle of winter, or to envi-sion winter blooms as you’re sweltering inthe city, wedding planners say that bridesshould begin working with florists 8 -12months before the wedding date.
“Certainly we like to seeour brides no later than 6months prior,” saysJennifer Litterst, owner ofMy Favorite Things inNew Town. “The goodnews is, they don’t need toknow a lot about flowers.”She says that her bridesshould plan to come inwith a color scheme or pic-tures in mind, and shouldalso have some idea oftheir personal style prefer-ence. “Is she going to be acasual bride? An elegantone? Where will the venuebe? All these things help us design the flowers that areright for her and her budget,” Litterst says.
Regardless of what your wedding style will be, threearrangements will be key:
The Bridal BouquetMost brides select the bridal bouquet first, and then
plan the other arrangements to complement it. What’strendy today? “Once it was de rigueur for brides to carry

a tightly gathered bouquet,” says Arlene Aitken, owner ofMorrison’s Flowers and Gifts. “But today’s bouquets arelimited only by the bride’s imagination.” Baskets, sprays, petals, pomanders, even Bibles with flowers have all beenused recently by brides wanting something a little differ-ent.
Bridesmaid’s Bouquets“Usually the bridesmaid’s
bouquet echoes the theme andthe style of the bridal bouquet, only in a less spectacular fash-ion,” says Aitken. “You mightconsider a special bouquet foryour maid of honor, but ingeneral you don’t want to becompeting with the bride.”Bridesmaid’s bouquets shouldbe lightweight and easy tocarry; and while it’s not neces-sary that they be perfectly iden-tical, they should echo the lookand feel of the bride’s bouquet.Church or venue decorations should also complement theoverall look. ‘We are seeing more and more color beingused,” continues Aitken. “Hot pink, natural green andorange have all shown up in some of our recent weddings.”
CenterpiecesCenterpieces can range anywhere from a standard, cen-
ter-of-table vase to something custom-designed to matchthe venue where the wedding is taking place. SaysLitterst, “One of our brides got married in a very rusticsetting. We used galvanized pails on each table as vases! The result was absolutely charming.” Aitken adds thatsome receptions feature centerpieces designed to hold thebridesmaid’s bouquets while they dine and dance. “This is
a wonderfully economic way touse flowers, and it also preventsthe individual bouquets fromgetting tired and crushed by theend of the day,” she says.
No matter where your imagi-nation takes you, today’s floristscan create it. And don’t worry ifyou or your spouse is allergic toflowers: silk or artificial arrange-ments are available that are justas magnificent as the real thing.May your wedding bloom!

No one can deny that a beautiful, happybride “takes the cake” at her own wedding. However, until the bride and groom arriveat the reception, it’s the cake that should“take the cake.”
A wedding cake is the centerpiece of a wedding whenthe newly married couple is not in sight. They come inlots of different sizes, styles, colors, and tastes and are areflection of the couple. So choosing a wedding cake is abig part of the wedding process.
Before deciding who will create your stunning treat, there a few things you should know. One is the overallcolor scheme for the wedding, from bridesmaid dresses totable cloths. Flower color and type, your budget, the num-
ber of guests expected, and the overall style of your wed-ding are also important factors in this decision. Knowingthese things before you meet with your baker or cakedesigner will help you select the perfect cake to enhanceyour wedding.
To help you determine the style of cake you are lookingfor, browse through bridal magazines and the internet.Pictures of these tasty masterpieces are everywhere.Perhaps you want a more traditional style of cake. Thecolumn pillared cake is beautiful with fresh flowers or edi-ble flowers on. Once only seen in round layers, today’sstacked wedding cake can be square or oval and decoratedwith outrageous stripes and circles or traditional flowers.A cascade stand cake offers many display options. Eachcake is designed to sit on its own pedestal, and the cakescan be placed anywhere on the cake table.

Another recently-popular kind of wed-ding cake is the over-the-top cake. Thesebeautiful and captivat-ing cakes defy all ele-ments of the traditionalwedding cake.“Anything and every-thing can be made outof sugar,” says AliceCooke of CreationsFrom the Heart, aSeaford-based bakingbusiness. Alice should
know. “I made a cake out of crispy rice cereal that I cov-ered in sugar to look like the famous Hollywood moun-tain. It had a sugar Hollywood sign, edible photographs ofthe bride and groom, and even several paparazzi figures. Ifyou can dream it, I can make it,” she laughs.
For something a little less traditional yet equally amaz-ing, check out the creations at Carolina Cupcakery. Withtwo locations, Norfolk and Chesapeake, owner DawnEskins and her staff create delicious and beautiful displaysusing cupcakes baked from scratch. There are over 110delectable flavors to choose from and include spiked, stuffed, and stacked cakes. It was their elegant “spiked”treats that appeared in Modern Bride magazine this pastyear. Your picture perfect day“I want to remember this day forever,”
sighs the beautiful bride, smiling for a pho-tographer with her handsome new husband. And with the help of a good photographer, she will.
Choosing the right photographer for your special dayrequires careful planning and should be one of the firsttasks you do. To determine who to book, ask friends andfamily who they have used. Look at their photos. Lookonline. This is a great way to help you choose the photog-rapher that is right for you.
Next, interview 3 to 5 photographers. Look at theirwork. Discuss any trends that are popular today that youmight be interested in. Whatever is important to youshould be something your photographer is willing and ableto provide.
“The wedding day is a long and very important day,”says Helen Oderisi of Helen’s Place at ColonialPhotography in Williamsburg. “The bride and groom needto make sure they have good rapport with their photogra-pher. When the magical day is over and the flowers, music, food, etc. are gone, all the couple has left is theirwedding album. This is what keeps those precious memo-ries alive.”
When couples come in to consult with Helen abouttheir big day, she offers a complimentary engagement ses-sion. “This gives the couple an idea of the way we work.In addition, we let them know that we always have at leasttwo staff members covering their big day, if not 3 or 4,”she says. With over 20 years of experience, Helen’s Placehas been recognized nationally for their work. This shouldcome as no surprise as Helen shoots weddings all overHampton Roads, the state, neighboring states, and haseven shot one as far away as the Netherlands. “That wasreally fun,” she says emphatically.
Once you have found a photographer, it is time tonegotiate price. Most sell packages that include the num-ber of staff members needed, hours involved, proofs, analbum, and a limited number of prints. It doesn’t hurt, however, to ask for a few more things to be included inthe price. A written contract should explain exactly what
Colonial Photography
services and products will be provided and the price. Besure that it includes dates you can expect proofs, photos, albums, etc. Leave no details unaccounted for.
Something else to consider is a list of “must-take” wed-ding shots. These can include photos of the wedding gownlying over a chair, the bride looking into a mirror, thegroom hugging his parents, the first kiss, the gift table, and so many more.
Some couples set a disposable camera on each table atthe reception. This is a fun way for your family andfriends to capture special moments of the big day that youmight not otherwise see.
When your wedding is over, go relax on your honey-moon. It won’t be until you get back that you will haveto start dealing with the photos. At this point, keep inmind that in addition to choosing pictures for youralbum, some bride and grooms present the bride’s par-ents with an album. You might also have room to nego-tiate at this point if you will be ordering a number ofcopies of the same pose.
A wedding album is such a heart-warming keepsake. It will be worth the effort you put in to find the perfectphotographer for your perfect day.

Actually, “Could you make me a favor?”is a more appropriate question for brides.More and more brides are giving theirguests small gifts, or favors, at their wed-ding. They are a sign of appreciation andgratitude from the bride and groom duringthe wedding ceremony or the reception.Though an age-old custom practicedthroughout the world, this idea is still newfor many brides.
How do you choose a particular favor? Where do youget them? How much should you spend? These areall important questions to considerfor this part of the wed-ding process.
A favor should be reflec-tive of the bride or couple. You can shop by categoriessuch as seasons, themes, color, gender, age, and more.Traditional brides oftenchoose the classic sugaredalmonds or chocolates beauti-fully wrapped, candles, or scent-ed soaps. Others may give suchitems as silver picture frameswith a picture of the bride andgroom, CDs of the couple’s favorite music, bottle stop-pers, personalized mint tins, cookies, lip balm – the possi-bilities are endless. Just make sure you have a budget inmind before ordering. Price will help you narrow down themany, many options you have.
Giuliana Rescigno, owner/designer of Bel Sentimentoin Williamsburg, creates elegant and unique favors forbrides all over Hampton Roads. She offers a variety ofhandmade creations including satin pochettes and pouchesthat can be filled with sugared almonds, chocolates, orother small treasures. For very fine and exquisite choco-lates, Rescigno works closely with Coco Chocolatier andCreperie in New Town in Williamsburg. They offer anextraordinary selection of chocolate delicacies that aresure to please every palate. Stop by to see samples ofRescigno’s favors and treat yourself to a truly decadentpiece of chocolate.
Another source for wedding favors is the internet. Thereis an endless supply of manufacturers that can provide youwith almost any type of item you can think of. It is best
to see if you can get a sample of the chosenfavor sent to you so that you know exactlywhat you will be getting.
After deciding on your small gift, youmust decide when to place your order.Sometimes “the sooner the better” isbest. This will help you avoid backo-rders, tackle any surprises that couldcome up, and have one less thing to

worry about as the big day gets closer. Ordering early isespecially recommended if the gift will be handmade orpersonalized.
Brides with a more generic type of favormay benefit fromordering closer tothe date of thewedding. This pro-vides them with abetter idea of thenumber of guestswho may be attend-ing. Either way, besure to firm updelivery dates beforeordering.
Favors are a great way to keep the memory of your wed-ding alive for all of your guests. Take time to really thinkabout what gift you think would be meaningful. Thenexplore all of your options. Most of all, have fun!

Beach? Mountains? Island? Ship? Withso many options to choose from, how willyou ever decide where to go for your hon-eymoon? For many couples, this is thebest part of the wedding process. You cango anywhere – within your budget, ofcourse. Not sure where to start?
A travel agency is a good idea for any couple planningtheir honeymoon. “You pay the same price for your tripregardless if you use a travel agency or the internet,” saysLaDonna Allen at Warwick Travel. “Most people don’tknow that. Agents get paid from the vendors they use,not from clients. We can provide you with complete serv-ice for all of your travel needs at no extra cost,” contin-ues Allen.
Travel agents also become advocates for their clients.“We cover every detail surrounding your trip planning. We want to know what you like to do, some ideas ofplaces you would like to go, and we start from there. It’svery important that your honeymoon matches your per-sonality. We’re here to help you find the perfect combi-nation at the best price,” says Allen.

For couples wanting to get married on ships orislands or other exotic places, the agencies often havepackages to offer which can help in lowering the costsinvolved. We stayin contact with the local wedding planner to ensurethat the couple’s needs are met,” says Allen.
The internet is very useful for providing informationto couples wanting to search around on their own. Withso many options, couples who go online can get an ideaof where they might want to go. Photos abound forthese travel destinations and are very enticing.
