Hits and misses

It was another Tolkien Christmas. Middle Earth is back in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

President Obama shakes hands with Raul Castro. Mr. President, what were you thinking?

Varela is an A school again. Enroll-ment is up. Awards are flowing. There’s no stopping the Vipers.

January pool party.Apparently Flor-ida forgot that it was Winter.

Winter Break - two weeks of binge watching Breaking Bad and drown-ing in hours of GTAV!

It’s a new year and Nintendo is still struggling with sales. But the last Zelda game was pretty good.

The Editor Says: Goodbye 2013V i e w p o i n t s F r o m t h e E d i t o r s

This past 2013 had to be one of my most pro-ductive years. I became managing editor of The Viper Vibe, won awards at the FSPA States competi-tion, released two issues of this magazine, as well as beating Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us. Yes, 2013 was a great year filled with so many interesting stories, video

games, movies and albums,

that it would take too long to rank them all. Thankful-ly, the all-knowing staff of The Viper Vibe put together a list of the greatest things to happen in 2013. So enjoy our opinions and let the fanboy/girl war begin

Sincerely, Cj Salcedo, Managing Editor #RIP2013

Online presence isnever truly anonymousWe Say:

A while ago, Ubisoft delayed one of the most anticipated next-gen launch titles of the year, Watch Dogs. The game deals with living in a world constantly monitored by the government. In one of the trailers, the antihero of the game, Aiden Pierce, was chasing a human trafficker and ended with the lines, “You think you’re untouchable? I’m here to shatter your illusion.” So what’s the lesson here? Every-thing anyone puts online will never go away. Someone will always see what you post, and this is an incredibly important lesson that people need to learn. You see, we live in a world that is always online. Everybody is posting something on Facebook, tweeting something or posting pictures on In-stagram. People also like to chat with others online and meet up with others. This brings us to our next point. The recent situation here at Varela. Someone did something online, they met up with someone, and now they’re in trouble. Now that individual’s life is

ruined forever all because of one stupid mistake Not only that, everybody knows about. It will continue to haunt him, and all the people in on it. So what’s our advice to you? It’s simple actually, just be careful what you put online. No matter how private you think your Facebook or Twitter settings are, someone will always be able to find it. A reasonable amount of IT skills and a computer can locate anything that is put on the web in a matter of seconds. That’s all it takes and it doesn’t take much skill to copy and paste it or save it on a hard drive, and for those of you that claim to have “deleted it,” it also doesn’t take much skill to find it within the drive. Really it’s a matter of common sense. We always say “never post any-thing you wouldn’t want your mother reading.” So next time, think before posting, tweeting or uploading,. It might save your life.

10Drone services take flightWhy it makes this list: The idea of drones attacking middle-eastern bomb makers and militia leaders sounds like something out of a science-fiction. Unfortunately, this very thing is happening and approved by President Barack Obama with more strikes con-firmed. On the lighter side of the news, Amazon is now using drones to deliver packages.

8The Royal baby is born Why it makes this list: On July 23, the world welcomed his Royal Highness Prince George Alex-ander Louis of Cambridge, who is now third in line to the Brit-ish throne. He is also heir to his father’s titles, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.

6New species discovered in EcuadorWhy it makes this list: It seems like we’re always hearing about some species going extinct. On August 15, 2013, Kristofer Hel-gen, the curator of mammals at the Smithsonian National Muse-um of Natural History, discovered the olinguito, a member of the racoon family and, according to TIME, “...the first mammal of the order carnivora discovered in the western hemisphere since 1978.”

5North Korea threatens the USWhy it makes this list: The idea of another country threatening to bomb our nation is something frightening. This isn’t the case for North Korea. After many empty threats, countless jokes and the infinite number of memes online, I think it’s safe to say that this matter can be put to rest.

3George Zimmerman: Not Guilty! Why it makes this list: It has been over a year since Florida teen, Trayvon Martin, was murdered by George Zimmerman, in which he claimed it was an act of self-de-fense. Due to Florida law, he was found not guilty, only to wind up back in jail a few days later, after threatening his wife. It’s not like there were any early signs of violence.

2O Big Brother, Where Art Thou? The NSA is keeping track Orwellian style! Why it makes this list: Knowing that the government is spying on everything you do through com-puters and cell phones is a really scary thought. Aside from basic electronics, the government is also monitoring World of Warcraft and XBox Live online accounts. Looks like Dale Gribble from “King of the Hill” was right.

1Democrats and Republi-cans refuse to play niceWhy it makes this list: For over two weeks, our government ceased operations due to dis-agreements over a budget bill. So kids remember, when you have a disagreement with somebody, just stop what you’re doing, in hopes of fixing it.

4Vatican gets rebooted Why it makes this list: Pope Fran-cis took over for Pope Benedict when Bendict became the first pope to voluntarily step down from the holy office in almost 600 years. Francis is the first Pontiff from South America and has been dubbed “the people’s pope” tack-ling issues on gay marriage and abortion. In September, Francis announced that Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII would be declared saints in April of 2014.

Roger Ebertfilm critic

(June 18, 1942 - April 4, 2013) As the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, Roger Ebert is arguably one of the greatest critics to ever live, so it was incredi-bly saddening to hear that he lost his 11-year long battle with thyroid and salivary gland cancer in April.

Margaret Thatcherpolitician

(Oct. 13, 1925 – April 8, 2013) The first and only woman to have held the position of British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher was one of the great minds of the 20th and 21st century. The “Iron Lady” will be missed.

Ray Harryhausenvisual effects creator/filmmaker

(June 29, 1920 - May 7, 2013) Ray Harryhausen is the grand-father of digital effects. Without the use of computers, Harryhausen found a way to mesmerize viewers with the use of stop-motion anima-tion and puppet animation. Films like E.T: The Extra Terrestrial, Pacific Rim and even Star Wars wouldn’t even be possible without the influence Harry-hausen has had on the industry.

Paul Walkeractor

(Sept. 12, 1973 – Nov. 30, 2013) Walker’s death came as a surprise to most people. He died in a car accident on his way from a char-ity event. An incredibly saddening event, Walker will be remembered for his roles in The Fast in the Furious films, Varsity Blues, and Hours.

Nelson Mandelapresident/activist

(July 18, 1918 – Dec. 5, 2013) Although imprisoned for a large part of his life, Mandela found a way to break the barriers of segre-gation in his country of South Africa and help end apartheid.

Every year, Varela welcomes the com-munity inside its halls and invites a prominent member to be our “Principal for the Day.” This year, we welcomed Ron Magill of Zoo Miami to spend the day with us and talk with students in the Vet and Communications Academies. Born in New York, Magill moved to Florida as a child and went to the University of Florida. He began his career at Miami’s Ser-pentarium and then moved on to becoming a zookeeper at Metro Zoo. He has spent the last 30 years working with all kinds of animals around the world and is a recognized zoologi-cal authority for many international programs on which he has appeared. Today, Magill is the

Communications Director at Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Gardens recently renamed Zoo Miami. On November 20, Magill started his day appearing live on WVHS News, Varela’s morning show. He spoke about the dangers of reality TV

and the importance of various forms of media. He told the journalism students how important it is to show the world and the publications

who you really are instead of having more than one personality, on and off camera. In person, Magill, who is well over six feet tall, is loud and bois-terous with a booming voice and moments of high pitched excla-mations. However, one on one, he is up close and personal and intensely quiet making the interviewer feel like they have his undivided attention. His advice to the Vet students was the importance of doing what they love no matter what, experience being the key. “The foundation of that education is so important, but at the same time don’t let the damn grades define you, because not everyone can make an A in everything,” he told them. Magill told Vipers how crucial it is to try their hardest in every-thing they do. “If you’ve got the effort you will be successful, not that you’re

going to get an A in every class, but if you put in the effort, that is what you have to apply to real life. Effort is in real life,” he said.

According to his website, Magill has worked with “animals ranging from crocodiles to eagles to cheetahs.” However, we asked him if there were any animals he did not like working with. While he said he enjoys working with most animals, he is “cautious around elephants” and “does not like roaches.”

Magill has been known to say “Traveling is like a safari is for the soul”, and when asked to explain, he stated that “To me, there’s no

greater education in the world then travel. When you get to meet other people in other cultures, it makes you realize the

place you play in the world and it makes you realize how big the world is. It helps reevaluate your outlook on life because the world is a huge place, and yet it’s a very small place.”

This school year has brought fresh new faces, both human and animal, to Varela’s Veterinary Science Academy. Ms. Yleana Escobar is the head teacher for this program. Joining her this year is Ms. Alexandra Draper. She was introduced to Varela last year when she did her teach-ing internship here from the University of Florida.

Draper teaches Vet Science level 1 and Chemistry. While many remember that Varela’s resident cow, Yli, had her baby last year, this year, she is joined by Sparky, Terror, Hav-oc, and Mayhem, the steer located in the old greenhouse.

Escobar runs the entire program seven days a week, com-ing into work on the weekends at 7 a.m. and often staying until well into the evening, to help take care of the countless number of animals housed here at Varela.

She teaches every single “vet kid” what they need to know in order to become a Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA), and it varies from large animals to small animals. In their senior year, students sit for the CVA Exam. With this certification, they can get a job as an assistant to a certified veterinarian at clinic.

Students in the academy give up

their afternoons and weekends to take care of the animals that are housed here, and to learn how to properly take care of them. Many of the students raise these animals for showmanship at local and state fairs. They are responsible for their upkeep and training.

However, not all of the animals in the “barnyard” are show animals. Many of the dogs are here for their last chance at life. If they didn’t come to us, they could be sent to the Humane Society where they will most likely be euthanized. These dogs are in need of a loving home and a family who loves them.

Before they find a home, vet stu-dents need to make sure that they are

clean and healthy. While students help vaccinate and medicate the ani-mals, local veterinarians partner with the academy to help with injuries and minor surgeries.

The Vet Academy is always in short supply of cleaning products, dog food, paper products, towels, blankets, things

that are necessary for their shelter to function properly. If you want to help, but don’t know how, you can always donate these things or foster a dog.

The academy would appreciate the generosity of families who open up their hearts and homes to these dogs. Every single one of them is up for adoption. Big or small, young or old, there’s a dog for anyone with a heart big enough to love them.

Varela welcomes foreign exchange students

This school year, 30 Chinese students traveled from the city of Shenzhen, to sunny Miami, Florida, to attend Miami-Dade county Public Schools. Seven of these students came Varela. Ms. Natalie Castillo, contemporary literature teacher, represented Varela and traveled to China to introduce the students to American culture, and to learn a little about theirs. We caught up with some of these strangers in a strange land, as well as Ms. Castillo, to speak with them about their adventures on the other side of the world.

Viper Vibe: Give us some of your impressions and highlights of your trip to China, Especially about the schools and students.

Castillo: China was simply otherworldly; I am intrigued by the challenge of working with new students of a vastly different culture, each with mixed English skills. Physically, the schools were very high volume, but each is currently increasing the amount of foreign immersion, and the teachers were equally inquisitive of America and its schools as I was of theirs. I spent six weeks there, and after I spent some time in the Guangdong province (where the city of Shenzhen is), I went to Beijing and enjoyed the tourist scene.

VV: Where are the students now?

Castillo: The students are participating in the home families system where they stay with Miami families that decided to host a single foreign student. The students were in contact with the families, but the first time they met was when the students arrived. How are the students assimilating? The group was divided into different classes, and while their impressions of the other students are positive, tend to stick together. They are interested in joining sports and clubs, particularly the community service club run by the school, and Badminton.

VV: Will we be seeing recurring waves of students coming from China?

Castillo: Nothing is certain right now, but assuming that this year goes well, we believe there would be an interest in renewing the program, apart from the Brazilian students coming in next year.

VV: What is the one thing most different from your homeland?Students - Lou Xueying: 12th grader (Shirly) and Chang Kexin: 12th grader (Cathy): The methods teachers use to teach are very different for us. At home, the teachers lecture and we absorb what they tell us. Here the classes are very interactive and the students question. Also the scheduling is very strange for us. At home we would live at school for five days a week, and school was from 7:20 in the morning until 5:30 at night, with a two hour break at noon.

VV: How much free time do you have outside of school/schoolwork, and what do you like to do with that time?

Students: Just about an hour each day. We would like to do some exploring in Miami as well as do clubs.

VV: What are some other similarities and differences between FVSH and your home high school?

Students: Differences, all the strange food, the lack of art, music, and PE classes as basic requirements. Similarities, rice (served at lunch).

VV: What are your college plans?

Students: We are both looking to enroll in an American college, because if we were to return to China, they would make us retake the 12th grade, so we are looking to take our SAT Test.-Shirly: I would like to travel to the northeast and attend university there. My school of preference would be Boston U.-Cathy: I am very interested in pharmaceuticals and am applying for Pacific U. in California.

Top 10Entertainment Stories of 201310Cable-TV and streaming services dominateWhy it makes this list: Over the past few years, cable-TV and TV streaming services, such as Netflix, have increased in both popular-ity and critical reception. Netflix exclusive House of Cards received accolades and praise, just as much as a standard TV show would.

7Brian Griffin: There and Back againWhy it makes this list: His death on Family Guy was a shock since so many people loved this character. So it wasn’t that big of a surprise when he was resurrected a while later. Geez, Seth, make up your mind!

6VGAs become VGX Why it makes this list: This year, Spike changed the Video Game Awards to an online talk show for-mat. Host Joel McHale should stick to Community.

8Macklemore wins two American Music AwardsWhy it makes this list: Mackle-more is arguably one of the great-est rappers of the past decade. His lyrics, beats and themes all work very well, and his activism and modesty is something to admire.

9“Sweet Niblets!” What hap-pened to Miley? Why it makes this list: Her “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” video are just a little bit strange. Not to mention the twerking at the VMAs and her joint-smoking at the EMA stage. I’m guessing her evil cousin; Luanne from Hannah Mon-tana is responsible for this.

5Sony and Microsoft usher in a new generationWhy it makes this list: The fanboy fight for which console is better rages on, as Sony releases the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft the Xbox One. Both feature immersive gaming experiences, live- stream-ing features and amazing graphics.

2Marvel, Lionsgate and Uni-versal roll in the doughWhy it makes this list: Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Despicable Me 2 are the high-est-grossing films of the year. The first is the third film in a series that has progressively gotten worse since 2008, the second is the sequel of a movie based off some book I’m probably not going to read, and the third is the reason why some movies should stop after the first one.

1Rockstar Games takes on “the big one”Why it makes this list: The highly rated Grand Theft Auto V is one of the most commercially successful entertainment products in history. On its release day, September 17, 2013, the game made over $800 million; two days later, it’s at $1 billion dollars.

3Great television coming and goingWhy it makes this list: Breaking Bad is arguably, the greatest show ever made. The same could be said for Matt Groening’s Futurama. So one could understand the grief that comes with the finale of these two

4Music artists make a come-backWhy it makes this list: Kanye West’s last solo album was released in 2010. Daft Punk and Justin Tim-berlake’s last albums were released in 2005 and 2006 respectively. So I guess one could say that 2013 was the year for comebacks?

Catching Fire has set theaters ablaze everywhere. When you grab your over-priced popcorn and abnormally sized drink, and sit in that theater for 2 hours and 26 minutes, you’re caught with an intense and emotional ride. This block-buster hit on November 22, pulling in around $161 million just in its opening weekend. The world of Hunger Games is set in a dystopian society in the future. The nation is called Panem, composed of one capitol and 12 districts. Each year, a girl and boy from the ages 12-18 are chosen through a lottery or “reaping” to com-pete to the death in the Hunger Games. It’s advertised as “entertainment” for everyone, but is really used as a punish-ment for the districts because of a past rebellion. A total of 24 competitors fight to the death until there is only one left standing. Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), of District 12, takes her little sister’s place at the reaping, and she and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), her male counterpart, are then thrown into this lethal competition. The first movie, The Hunger Games, grossed over $686 million worldwide.

Catching Fire’s opening weekend was more than its predecessor indicating that its total worldwide gross may exceed the first. Those that have read the book, will be satisfied with the film. They added a comedic feel to it, which we need because this book is full of emo-tional trauma. The elevator scene is one that most people are talking about. In the book, when Johanna Mason (Jena Malone), the sassy girl from Dis-trict 7 disrobes in the elevator, it stayed true to the scene in the movie. With Malone playing off the scene perfectly and Lawrence’s facial expressions, it was truly an award-winning scene. Violence is another thing. In the first film, the violence was handled delicately by its director Gary Ross. In The Hunger Games, the violence centered on children killing children. If Ross had portrayed it realistically, censors would have bumped the movie’s rating up to an R thereby losing a large portion of their intended audience. In Catching Fire, the tributes from each district are made up of past victors which meant that the contestants would be adults. Catching Fire also saw a new director take the helm. Francis Lawrence was intent on bringing more realism to the movie and the more adult themes in the book allowed him to push the line.

While The Hunger Games had an estimated budget of $78 million, Catch-ing Fire’s budget was almost double at $130 million allowing the new director to really bring this book to life. As in the book, there was major character development, which was quite clear. Hopefully Mockingjay, the last book, will really tie everything together. Mockingjay Part 1 is set to release in 2015, with a major fanbase waiting ea-gerly for it. May the odds be ever in their favor.

From across the pond, comes another amazing band that everyone should watch out for. Bastille’s debut album Bad Blood was released in March in the U.K.

Every song on the album has its own beat completely different from each other making each song unique. This band has brought the African drum beats call and response that we don’t see or hear every day. “I wanted each [song] to be its own story with its own atmosphere which brings in different sounds and ele-ments of production, incorpo-rating aspects of the different genres and styles that I love.” said band creator Dan Smith in a press release. The single “Bad Blood” is a song with a catchy rhythm that speaks of a relationship that has changed and become tense. The relationship that

has fallen apart can’t mend itself. It’s about “growing apart from people you grew up with, and how bizarre it is that these people proba-bly helped form the person you’ve become, and even though you don’t see them any more you are kind of intrinsically linked by your past,” said Smith. “Pompeii” is the most popular song from the album. It was the first song that was released as a single and has hit #1 on Alternative Radio. “Pompeii” takes place in the Roman city that was covered in ash trapping the bodies in a thick casing of ash. The lyrics reflect those

charred bodies having a con-versation. While most of the subject of Bad Blood is sad, the vocals give you a good vibe. Their sound is original pairing haunting melodies with lively beats. This album flows very well together even though each song tells a different story. “Producing the record, I wanted to off-set epic sound-ing instrumentation with lyrics that combine intimate stories or conversation,” said Smith. Both iTunes and Amazon are selling the 15 song album for $7.99, a price well worth paying.
