Generally, it’s going to be a quiet weekend. And you know what? That’s okay by me! It gives everyone a chance to catch up on things you should’ve finished already, or a head start on things you’ll need to get done so you can enjoy all the fun stuff later this season. That’s the best part of early May. Honest Abe said: “Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.” I’ve been taking advantage of this early slack period by spending considerable time in Bemus Point, working on The Villager’s sister paper, (going from our off-season

quarterly schedule to our summer-heavy monthly routine – exciting stuff!) Others I know are following suit by performing lawn and garden chores, putting away the last remnants of the ski season, and tuning up their mountain bikes. It’s also time to take those golf lessons, which might save you some embarrassing moments later this summer. So, dear readers, it’s time to take care of your serious business so you can partake in all Ellicottville has to offer during the lazy days of summer. Get crackin’! Until next week!Jeanine Zimmer

The Village Zoning Board of Appeals opened a public hearing on Tuesday night to consider two appeals from contractors on behalf of their clients. The first to be heard was Mike Nickolson about a variance he is requesting for a project he has in the Greer Hill area. He is extending a back porch by six feet. This will make a corner of the porch cross the three-foot setback from the property line. The board asked Mr. Nickolson a few questions to clarify that although the existing porch is being re-built, it really is just an extension of the current porch. There were no objections to the plan. The board went on to the second variance request for the evening. Bart Frank was there representing a project he has on Elizabeth Street. He is adding a master suite and more living

space to a home, and the addition will also make it impinge on the property line setback. He showed plans of the addition to the board. In reviewing the plans one of the board members made a comment about the addition “not in keeping with the rest of the house,” adding that the various home styles in the village are a “mish mash.” The board acknowledged receiving a letter from a neighbor wanting to see something between her house and the one being remolded but apparently did not request anything specific. The board noted that there is a hot tub in back of the home. As before there was no member of the public on hand to make any comment. The public hearing was closed and the board discussed the proposals. There was a short discussion about the Greer Hill request and it was approved. The board then turned to the letter

submitted by the Elizabeth Street neighbor and consideration of the appropriate buffer between the houses. It was pointed out that a fence or planting three-foot tall trees might not be an effective division. One board member insisted that the buffer be “significant and meaningful.” There was concern about the accuracy of the boundary markers, which would affect a set back ruling. A motion was made to accept the request for a variance with the amendment that a surveyor re-stake the property lines, and recommended a living green buffer be established between the properties. Mr. Frank requested a copy of the letter, which will be provided. As there were only two fairly simple requests before the board the meeting was adjourned after about 25 minutes. One of the board members was heard to comment “that was the best public hearing I’ve ever been to.”

The softening Real Estate market is increasing homeowner demands for tools to help bring a profit in the sale of their homes. ASP Home Staging has become one such tool. By properly cleaning, de-cluttering and preparing a house before it is listed on the market, homeowners have a better chance of selling their home at or above list price. In a recent study conducted by Stagedhomes.com, of over 1000 homes, (55% Vacant, 45% occupied) across the United

2012 Cause for CelebrationRaffle at the Cattaraugus County Arts Council

The Cause for Celebration Raffle has become one of our most successful events. Scheduled for July, 14 2012, tickets are now on sale. Once again, your $100 ticket will give you fantastic odds to win artwork created by five of the best artists the region has to offer, and at the same time net CCAC roughly $8,500. That’s a lot of money for a small nonprofit. We’ll use it to help fund a year of workshops, kids programming, Routes to Art, member show, contemporary exhibitions, community improvements, and advocacy for quality of life in the Southern Tier. A reminder on how it works…we’ll sell 100 raffle tickets for $100 each. Each ticket you buy will give you 1 in 100 odds to win six separate raffle drawings. (But once you win, you’re out of the running for

the remaining artwork.) Our generous donor artists this year are Debra Eck, Barbara Fox, Nance Jackson, Anne Mormile, Thomas Paquette, and Mikel Wintermantel, and . As the artists decide on their donation, we’ll post the images here. The artwork has historically had a total net worth of >$9,000! Each ticket will admit two people to the Cause for Celebration Drawing Party on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 6–8pm here at 100 West Main in Allegany. One of the nicest neighborhoods in the Village is along Mechanic Street; a quiet thoroughfare on the way to the Library. Some of the Village’s oldest houses line the street. They are mostly a mixture of Victorians and Cape Cods; painted in quiet tones. One of the properties along the street has something that sets it apart from the rest. It is a Cape Cod with an added bedroom, a front porch, and a glassed in Florida room. Around back is a converted barn that houses six bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen and family room. It’ all just steps

to downtown. The renovated barn is the master stroke. The front door opens to a landing that holds two doorways. To the right is the first floor living area. The door straight ahead goes to the apartment upstairs. The first floor holds a large living room, and a full kitchen. The spacious kitchen has a contemporary flair, and the living area has plenty of room to stretch out. There are three bedrooms and a bath on this floor. Upstairs is another living level with three more bedrooms and a full bath. There is a nice kitchen that lacks only an oven to make it complete. This level would make a great in-law apartment, or ski guest quarters.

The house in front still maintains some of its original charm. The front porch is perfect for curling up with your Kindle on a Summer afternoon. The master bedroom and bath are on the ground floor, as well as a spacious dining and living room. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a fill bath. It would make a great long term rental. The possibilities are endless, you could live in any of the living spaces and rent out the other two. Close to downtown, and a short distance to golf and skiing, this is a great way to get two for the price of one. For more information about this property contact Larry Oeffling at Ellicottville Real Estate. 716-699-6748.

A hometown touch may have contributed to the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters recognizing some local radio personalities. Scott Douglas, host of 100.1 The Hero’s “The Morning Buzz,” said the association recently awarded the radio station hosts Outstanding Local Radio Personality/Team 2012. The show covers everything from politics to sports, music, movies, the internet and people making news with a mix of Classic Rock music. It

is hosted by Douglas and Frank Williams, who provides news and sports. Douglas is from Cattaraugus but now lives in Little Valley, and Williams resides in Bradford, Pa. They recently left those homes to receive the state award, however.Douglas attributes receiving it to providing local features on the show that are not evident in today’s more-common syndicated shows that are recorded elsewhere and played in numerous locations. Calling them “generic,” he said 100.1 The Hero’s morning show includes talk about local

issues with which listeners can relate. For instance, he said, the hosts may talk about pot holes on roads a listener may have just experienced, to what’s happening with the Buffalo Bills. “We talk about ourselves, and people enjoy that,” he said.In addition, he said, it provides listeners a chance to interact, as the two take calls, while other shows may be “canned.” The local tone, he said, is necessary for radio stations to survive, as they face competition from Ipods, computers, satellite radio and more that do not feature the interaction. “The Morning Buzz,” he said depicts what’s going on that morning in local news and what’s happening in the area, along with music that may not be found on other area shows that feature music from other genres. The show, which can also be heard at morningbuzzradio.com, can be listened to from 6 to 9:30 a.m. Monday - Friday at 100.1 FM and 1490 AM. Douglas graduated from Ohio’s Center for Broadcasting in 1999 and worked for Salamanca’s 98 Rocks for seven years before beginning work at WBRR in 2007. Williams has worked at the station for more than 25 years.

When Katy Herbach moved to Ellicottville about 10 years ago, she knew she wanted to be part of its atmosphere. She recently put her experience working in area restaurants and designing cakes together with that desire and has opened Katy’s Café. “I always wanted my own restaurant in Ellicottville,” she said, adding she has been in the restaurant business for about 14 years including work at the Pyramid Inn, Red Garter Restaurant, Ellicottville Depot and Madigan’s. Originally from Salamanca, she said she watched her mother cook and then the other chefs at the restaurants where she worked. She took some courses at an area craft store to learn about making cakes and “ran

with it,” she said. She opened what she called “a special and welcoming café” in the community she admires. “I fell in love with it,” she said about Ellicottville. The village’s residents and tourists are friendly, unique, generous and supportive of each other. That led to her opening her own business in the place she admires. Herbach said she has owned the café for about a month now. She offers breakfast, including breakfast sandwiches, plated items such as French toast and healthy dishes like fruit and yogurt. For lunch, there are paninis, wraps and salads. One can also get ice cream and baked goods. Custom-made cakes are also designed by Herbach. Herbach said if one visits Katy’s Café on facebook, or calls her at 699-8860, they can make

arrangements to meet with her so she can design a cake specifically for an individual. She uses Fondant and Gum Paste, just like shows on television, she said. Although she sticks to basic flavors for larger cakes, such as yellow, chocolate and strawberry, she said she can do “whatever your heart desires” for smaller cakes such as carrot cakes. Her favorite cake was the wedding cake she made when her friend got married. The five-tier cake was decorated with daisies. Her favorite, however, was the 3-D golf cart replica she made. The café is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the remainder of the week. She expects to have extended hours in the future.

Trap Shooting is a major form of competitive clay pigeon shooting. The sport is in some ways a replacement for a game where the targets were actual live pigeons. Trap shooting has been around since the 1790’s, when it used real birds, usually passenger pigeons which were extremely abundant at the time. Fake birds were introduced in the 1860’s and were replaced by clay targets in the 1880’s. The most infamous female sharpshooter in history was undoubtedly Annie Oakley, born in Ohio in 1860. She originally began sharpshooting to help her family financially and joined Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in 1885. She was able to shoot the end off of her husband’s cigarette and even performed for such royals as Queen Victoria and Kraiser

Wilhelm II. The Ellicottville Sportsmen’s Club was founded in the early 60’s. Founding members include Keno Babcock of Great Valley, Dewayne “Red” Butler (Great Valley), Bud Knapp (Ellicottville), Dick Nilks (Ellicottville) and John Whitmer (Ellicottville), et al. Club meetings were held at Bernie’s Barber Shop and the Barn on Monroe Street in town and they shot in an old gravel pit near Holimont. In June of 1965, the Club filed for incorporation at the Cattaraugus County Courthouse. The Registration Papers reveal that Kenneth Hintz, George Knapp, Howard Marsh, Carol Noelck and Richard Noelck all attested to being US citizens and legal residents of NY State. In 1972, the Club purchased 11

acres of land off Route 242 from John Widger and the actual clubhouse was built by students of BOCES across the road. Membership is currently around 150 men and women, with leagues and tournaments year-round. For the Ladies Shoot on May 20th, no experience is required. All levels are welcome. Shotguns and Ear Protection will be provided. The cost is $2 per person for 5 birds and shells or $8 for a full round of 25. Food and beverage will be available. For additional information, call Barbara at 716-983-4537 or Linda at 301-602-9082. The Event will be held rain or shine. NewsEllicottville had a strong presence in the April 27-May 2, 2012 edition of Buffalo’s Business First. Kevin, Shane and Connor Kell of Madigan’s were recognized for bringing Buffalo history with them when they opened the Ellicottville tavern. The article details Kevin’s history in Buffalo as a former police officer and former co-owner of Mulligan’s Brick Bar with partner and businessman Michael Militello. The story states, “In buying Madigan’s – named for his mother’s maiden name – Kell brought some Buffalo history to Ellicottville. Its walls are graced with an eclectic array of memorabilia

that would make any collector jealous.” The article goes on to list some of the impressive paraphernalia it refers to: “There’s a white Buffalo Bills helmet signed by more than 200 players, from Jim Kelly to the late Jim Braxton. Steve Christie’s jersey hangs in one wall. So does a poster honoring Notre Dame’s 1988 defeated championship season.” The article closes with a glimpse of how extremely popular and successful Madigan’s has become: “During Ellicottville’s annual Fall Festival weekend, the owners go through six cases of Crown Royal and more than 300 cases of 30-packbeers. On a typical ski weekend, it is not unusual for Madigan’s to run through three cases of vodka, another case of Crown Royal and a case of Jagermeister.” Also in this edition of Buffalo’s Business First was an article highlighting the work

of Shanell Kiersz, Corporate Sales and Marketing Manager for Ellicott Hospitality (parent company of the Wingate by Wyndham hotel). The article focuses on how Kiersz has been “marketing extended-stay hotels to those in the oil and gas industry”, and how this has proved to be a big boost in the company’s business. The articled defined extended stay hotels as units in which people stay in over two weeks and provide refrigerators, microwaves, free breakfast and occasional dinners to their guests. Kiersz has marketed the Wingate hotel to companies such as the Palmerton Group and Shell Oil. The article notes the success of her efforts: “In mid-April, Kiersz said on company was renting four to six rooms for four to twelve people at the 84-room Wingate.”

their continuing popularity. 2012 is proving to be a milestone in terms of expansion, centering on the new ski lodge, currently under construction. While it won’t be finished until the end of the year, the new lodge is already taking shape. Progress is being made daily, according to Holiday Valley Marketing Director Jane Eshbaugh. In all, the resort is investing $13.9-million this year. In addition to the new main lodge, improvements are also being made at the Sky High Adventure Park, the Double Black Diamond golf course, and additional snowmaking systems on various trails. The new $12-million Holiday Valley Lodge replaces the resort’s main base lodge, which came down immediately after the close of this year’s ski season in March. Already erected are the elevator shaft and the fireproof stairways at either end of the building. Just this week, the steel started going up, suggesting the eventual shape of the building.

Eshbaugh notes, “It’s kind of early right now, but you can see some (work completed).” As for completion, she said the resort should receive its certificate of occupancy for the new lodge in early December of 2012. Visitors to the Holiday Valley website can monitor the construction progress. Pictures of the new lodge will continually be added to the site. You can go to www.holidayvalley.com/new_lodge.” There you can view various renderings. You will also find pictures of the old Main Lodge before it came down, along with photos of the demolition and the new construction. Eshbaugh says all the steel should be up by the end of May, with the windows to go in during August. “You should be able to see the shape of it in July,” with the roof trusses up by then. The new Holiday Valley Lodge should be ready in time for the 2012-13 winter season. The new 66,000 square foot lodge will feature an upscale look inside and out, highlighted by a 32-foot cathedral ceiling, expansive exterior decks, conference rooms, repair shops, and day care. The goal of the new building is to “Improve circulation, services, and

experiences for Holiday Valley guests,” according to Jane Eshbaugh. As for other improvements, the resort points to their new “Zip to the Bottom” course making for more thrills at Sky High. And for the more sedate golfing set, the number eleven hole at the Double Black Diamond Course will be more “playable” with an expanded fairway. New golf cars and maintenance equipment will improve conditions on the course. Eshbaugh believes this year’s total investment to be important to the resort. “I think it’s very impressive that we could go through a winter like last winter, and continue on with these expansion projects. The lodge project has been in the works for several years, so we weren’t depending on one season to finance the lodge. But the rest of the expansion is because we worked really hard last year, and tried to be very conscious of what we were spending money on. We’ve worked very hard to keep people coming back, despite a challenging year (in terms of the weather). It was not the greatest, but an OK year. So we can continue on our yearly improvement plan.”

staff and continuing to right-size district operations.” Ward states that a series of factors have come together to greatly impact the district’s ability to maintain programs and staff. He cites a decrease in state aid projected to be over $63,000, the end of federal jobs money (stimulus dollars), coupled with increased retirement costs, a steady increase in health insurance, and no real mandate relief. Add to that mixture the property tax cap from Albany, which limits the tax levy on all school districts in New York State. Ward also says it’s unfair that losses in state aid have disproportionately impacted upstate school districts, when compared with similar size but wealthier districts downstate. He cites the Pocantico Hills School District (near Tarrytown), which spends about $41,000 per pupil, compared with the $17,000 spent per student in Ellicottville. The current 2011-2012 Ellicottville school budget totals $10,495,000. A downstate district relies on state aid less than an upstate counterpart. The new Ellicottville School

budget, as put to the voters, will be $10,641,795. The ballot will also feature two propositions. One is the five-year leasing of two, 35-passanger school buses, for $16,350. The other proposition asks voters to approve $28,000 for the Ellicottville Public Library. The budget itself is up by about 1.6 percent, compared with last year. The tax levy will increase by about 2.6 percent, which according to Ward, falls within the state’s tax cap. Exclusions to the tax cap allowed to school districts are included in the new tax levy. Ward says, “We are still under what we could raise in taxes.” Ward explains that two elementary staff positions were cut as a result of declining enrollment. “This past year, we had seven sections of kindergarten and first grade. Based on next year’s enrollment, we’re going to have five sections.” But all the news is not bad. Ward says next year, Ellicottville will start an honors program in U-S History and eleventh grade English, to help students going to college to be better prepared. “Also, music theory one and two is being put back in the curriculum. Music theory one will come in this year, while music theory two will come in next year. We have not had that around since the

1990s.” Ward said the school is also working to develop a series of twenty-week math electives. “These would be non-regents math credits, but they can be interesting. Sports and math would be (an example).” The school is also developing a project-based math course for sophomores and juniors, which is a hands-on type course. “These would be a variety of things that would be somewhat practical and somewhat related to the area we live in. An example might be how much water does it take to lay down three inches of snow on a certain slope. It’s a different way to approach math.” Federal grant funding will allow Ellicottville to make the school building wireless, to replace routers and switches throughout the building. The school first applied for this type of funding three years ago. Ward said, “It will cost us (locally) $80,000, but we will get $140,000 (grant dollars) to go with it. That’s a pretty good deal.” Ward said that because of staff cuts, the district is losing one course next year. It’s a JCC biology, college-level course. “But we’re hoping to be able to do something to bring it back. We’re also working with JCC on a couple of other college-level courses that our staff will be offering this next year.”

across Explorer to Morning Star then through the woods and across Mardi Gras, down Holiday Run to Edelweiss to the finish at the Training center. The 3.5 mile race has downhill drop of 600 feet. The 5.4 mile race adds a loop from the Eagle across to Cindy’s, down Bear Club and a challenging uphill climb, where it joins back into the short course. The race starts at Spruce Lake on the top of the mountain. For competitors, there is a complimentary lift ride to the start line on the Spruce Lake Quad Chairlift. Competitors also have the option of walking up to Spruce Lake if they would

like to do so, but should plan accordingly for timing. The race will be done in groups of 150, so that not all competitors start the race at once. The eight obstacle courses include a log pile, a “slalom” course, a maze and the grand finale of the mudslide. After the race is a party for participants and spectators with music, beverages and a cookout. Eshbaugh said that they are looking to have about 500 competitors for the mudslide event. On the same day, Holiday Valley will also be hosting a Kid’s Mini Mudslide for children up to age 12 that begins at the Mountain Sports Center after the conclusion of the mudslide race. Children ages 3 though 7 must be accompanied by an adult for the race. Pre-registration, which must be done before June 7th, for the event can be done at active.com

or holidayvalley.com/mudslide for $45, $10 for the Kid’s Mini Mudslide. Those who pre-register also get a free t-shirt, and all competitors will get a finisher’s medal and a goody bag. Eshbaugh said for those who wear their finisher’s medal into town after the race, special deals will be offered at local businesses. Race packet pick-up is Friday, June 15th from 6 to 9 p.m. at Tamrack, or from 8 to 10 a.m. on the day of the race. On the day of the race, the cost goes up to $60, and the Kid’s Mini Mudslide is $15. Eshbaugh said she is very excited for this race, as it will attract athletes and those just looking to have fun. “You don’t have to be a super-hard athlete to compete in this race,” she said. “You just have to be anyone who likes to have fun…and doesn’t mind mud.”

★ ★ Sudoku Challenge ★ ★To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution.

Good luck!
