Letter from the President

Dear Neighbors,

Fall is upon us, meaning by the time you have read this, some of our proud traditions will have taken place, such as the Halloween Decoration Contest and Halloween Costume Parade, and even more are right around the corner --- Santa’s Ride and the Holiday Decoration Contest. These annual events continue because our community recognizes the importance of maintaining the Village’s traditions and emphasizes the importance of being more than just neighbors.

Our community was started back in 1947 and was specifi cally planned to be a cohesive neighborhood, with Loch Raven Elementary School as the community anchor, with homes starting on Aberdeen and the surrounding area, until branching out to include additional homes south, west, and northwest of the school.

We have agreed to live as one community. We have agreed to be bound by the same covenants, rules, and to act together in the interests of the community, even over individual wants. Since 1947, far more often than not, our community has acted together and without regard to physical barrier or artifi cial lines drawn. Those lines may differentiate parts of Loch Raven Village to others, but they should not divide us. We should support efforts that unite us in as many ways as possible.

Obviously, we will not agree on all issues at all times. However, we are 1,472 homes strong. If we dedicate ourselves to a goal, we are far more likely to get results. Together, we have the strength and we have the numbers to make a difference.

Now, we have several long-term issues for which this community needs your help and participation. We need to make sure that Pleasant Plains Elementary School is as strong of an asset as possible for our children and our community. We need more contributors for the Crier and other communication outlets. Just as important, we all want Loch Raven Elementary School building and site to remain of benefi cial use to the Village for years to come. However, the building needs major renovations. We need a team of people to help with a long-term plan, fundraising and other efforts to

ALRV MEETINGS

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month

7:00pm, Loch Raven Center 1801 Glen Keith Boulevard, Room 102

unless otherwise noted in events calendar; no meeting in August

Residents are encouraged to attend, and to help in our ongoing work

“to protect, maintain, and enhance the property values of Loch Raven

Village homes, and the quality of life of Loch Raven Village residents.”

the area through landscaping and other design features and to make sure that quality of life issues such as lighting, noise and visual clutter (among others) are addressed. There is still work to do in the general area, but we are hopeful that this initial round will spur additional investment and growth and will help build stronger relationships between area businesses and our community. We are looking to play a greater role in infl uencing the area projects, each project’s appearance and use, and other things so that our neighborhood benefi ts from these projects.

For our community to have an even greater infl uence over some of the projects on the way, those yet to come and those in the greater area, we need your help. We need you to become members of the Association. We need your help on the Board. We need your help at meetings. We need you to attend events. We need your help with bigger projects and we need your help with smaller projects. Even things like delivering this issue of The Crier takes neighborhood volunteers, and for those of you that delivered January’s issue and those delivering this issue, on behalf of the Board, thank you!

We have approximately 1,500 homes here in Loch Raven Village. Therefore, we have the numbers to be more infl uential and to accomplish more things, but for that to occur, we need people to join, to volunteer and/or to show up to certain events or meetings so others see how strong our community truly is.

If you have any questions, come on down to our monthly meeting at Loch Raven Elementary School/Center (every second Wednesday each month except August). Also, as always, please feel free to e-mail me ([email protected]).

Letter to the EditorMany thanks to Jason Garber. Someone recently dumped a mattress in the alley behind the Giant. Because the alley is private property, Baltimore County would not pick it up and dispose of it. I contacted Jason Garber and asked for his help. Within a week, Jason and some helpers got a truck, picked up the mattress & disposed of it. As a 32-year resident of Loch Raven Village, I know this is just one of many examples of the importance of paying your dues and taking care of our neighborhood. Mary Fran StromyerKirkwall Court

Letter from the PresidentDear Neighbors,

As written in November and as you may have heard, there are a number of changes happening and being discussed in the Loch Raven area. Soon, we will have new businesses where the Bel-Loc Diner and Baynesville Electronics, are and where the old Raytheon/Bendix building was. Ukazoo Books is going to be opening close to the intersection of Loch Raven Blvd. and Joppa Road and I hope to see you there!

The Loch Raven/Joppa Commercial Revitalization District is important to us. We want to have businesses in close proximity to our neighborhood that not only provide much needed services and goods, but we also want those businesses to augment the attractiveness of the area and relatedly, help with our property values. For these reasons, the ALRV Board has endeavored to make sure, to the extent possible, that the projects coming in improve the general appearance of

Plan Ahead for Dumpster Day — June 17thThe Loch Raven Village and Knettishall communities are sponsoring the Spring Dumpster Day (a bit later than usual) to provide an opportunity for residents to dispose of unwanted household and yard items that may be too cumbersome to place in weekly trash or yard pickup. This community clean-up program is managed and paid for by the Baltimore County Bureau of Solid Waste Manage-ment to assist communities in keeping their neighborhoods clean.

Dumpster Day will be held on June 17 from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon or until dumpsters are fi lled at the parking lot of Pleasant Plains Elementary School.

Take advantage of this opportunity to discard unwanted stuff in your home and yard. Please review the acceptable and prohibited items listed. This is not a sub-stitute for the weekly trash pickup, and contractor demolition cannot be accepted.

The County will now charge communities a fi ne if prohibited materials are found in the dumpsters at the landfi ll. PROHIBIT-ED MATERIALS AND CONTRACTORS WILL BE TURNED AWAY!! NO HOUSE-HOLD ELECTRONICS ARE ALLOWED!! You may legally dispose of these items at designated county landfi lls.

ACCEPTABLE ITEMS:The following items will be accepted for disposal: Box springs / mattressesFurnitureHouse furnishingsLawn furnishings / tools / grillsLawn mowers / edgers Brush /yard wastePlastics / metals /wood scrapsToys / bikes / toolsBroken glassCement / rocks Propane tanks (if clean and cut in half)HeatersWindows / screensGas rangesHot water heaters

PROHIBITED ITEMS:According to Baltimore County Law the following items are prohibited for dis-posal and CANNOT BE accepted at the dumpster day event:Explosive or fl ammable materials Chemicals / paints/ oils / antifreezeTires (on or off rims)Medical / animal wastesBatteries / PCBs / liquids or liquid wastesFreon (refrigerators / freezers / air con-ditioners)Computers (CPUs, monitors, keyboards, printers, scanners, cables)Televisions, VCRs, DVD players, video displaysTelephones, answering machines, fax machinesAsphalt, black top Large stumpsWood logs greater than 8 inches in diam-eter and 6 feet in length

Volunteers are needed! We had a great turnout last year from both neighborhoods. This is a great community event, so if you aren’t sure how to get involved with your neighborhood this is a great way to get started. You get to meet your neighbors and also some of our elected offi cials who stop by. Volunteers from both communities will be on hand to direct traffi c, help keep prohibited items from landing in the dumpsters, assist our senior and handicapped neighbors unload their vehicles, and clean up the parking lot. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions please call Nick Linehan at 443-895-1407.

Community Builders WantedBabcock Presbyterian Church would like to invite Loch Raven Village and Knettishall neighbors to join our Community Builders group. Volunteers help with community activities such as the movie nights, community yard sale, breakfast with Santa and hopefully much more. If you are interested in volunteering at one of these events or any future activities, please contact Marianne Waugh at [email protected] or 410 733-8871, or Chris Sartor at [email protected].

Tips from the COP Whether someone received a new bike for Christmas or you already own a bike, now would be a good time to record the serial number. That information, together with the make and model may help in recover-ing your bike if stolen or lost. The serial number is found on the underside of the pedal crank shaft. This information will be useful should you be fortunate enough to have the bike recovered by the police, as they log bikes by serial number. Call Precinct 6 at 410-887-2361 when the bike disappears and ask to speak to Offi ce Kathy Kraemer about a stolen bike. The police keep the bikes for 30 days before disposition. It’s best to take bikes indoors at night or

store in a locked shed. Always lock bikes to a sturdy structure when not in use! A free standing bike, even if left for a few minutes, is an invitation for someone to take it for a permanent ride! Remember,

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING

Contact the COP coordinator at [email protected].

Remember to keep your porch lights on through the night. It’s our fi rst line of defense against mischief, and looks pretty too! Shine bright LRV!

Thank you to all who participated in the “Keep Calm and Find What’s Wrong” Contest in last month’s Crier issue. Congratulations to Eileen Connolly! You are the lucky winner of the $25 Panera Gift Card.

Springtime often fi nds us working on im-proving our homes. Don’t forget to check Guidelines before making structural or color changes. As always please feel free to contact a board member or locate Guidelines and Covenants on our site at LochRavenVillage.com for more informa-tion or to answer your questions.

More Movies! Are you wondering if there will be more movies on the lawn at Babcock this spring? Well wonder no more – the an-swer is yes! Movie nights will again be sponsored by the Associates of Loch Ra-ven Village and Babcock Presbyterian Church on three consecutive Fridays – June 3, 10, and 17. There will be a free cookout from 6:30-7:30 followed by kids’ activities until it gets dark. The movies will be shown rain or shine.

Look for more information about movie selections in the next issue of the Crier and also on the Loch Raven Village Face-book page.
