Last weekend saw Zone 10 join the other 15 Zones within NSW to play off for the 2013 Inter Zone Championship played at Blacktown City BC. Played under perfect weather, this

competition showcased the very best bowlers from around NSW

ROUND 1 saw Zone 10 pitted against the very strong Zone 13, (who ultimately won

the overall title) and in a very close match, we were finally beaten by a margin of 5 shots, 80 to 75.

ROUND 2 saw our boys up against Zone 11, who they had beaten comfortably in a

warm up match 2 weeks ago at Wenty Leagues. With a win required to put pressure on the leading teams we unfortunately had a bad result with the scoring being 92 – 64 in favour of Zone 11, dashing any hopes of making the finals.

ROUND 3, being a “dead rubber” saw the selectors mix the sides around a little, with

Keith Smith & Mick Harry being rested and replaced by David Banasiak & Trevor Imer. This match saw Zone 10 defeat Zone 1 with the score 90 to 69

Unfortunately our overall performance did not match our expectations this year and we will come back next year bigger and better. Thank’s goes to all the guys who represented Zone 10 and also to the selectors for their time & effort. Congratulations goes to Zone 13 (Sydney South) who defeated Zone 16 (Illawarra) 79 to 61 in a high class match to take out the Final

A very special event was held at Brush Park Bowling Club on Saturday 7th September in honour of the memory of Barry Purdy. Barry was a very popular bowling and social member of both the West Epping and Brush Park Bowling Clubs before losing his battle against cancer in June 2012. Apart from his great bowling skills and easy ways, Barry was better known for his vast array of very colourful Hawaiian shirts and his liking for an unusual drink which he called

“Tutti Fruiti”, a concoction of white wine, red wine and green ginger cordial. The event drew a total of 102 ladies and gents bowlers who were all decked out in bright

Hawaiian shirts. The event was sponsored by Brookers Brake Service, 3 Mellor St. West Ryde who kindly donated $1000 towards the prizes for the competition. The winners of first prize

were Adriano Cukon, Mick Asensio and Tony Mercier.

In the Minor Pairs Grand Final at PHBC, Scott Wallyn & Kel Sullivan took on the experience of

e the finals and a top game Len Ward & Cliff Fairbrother. Both teams had competed well to makwas e (and that is used loosely) xpected. Youth ultimately beat experience and Scott & Kel were

worthy winners 22-18. Congrats to all contestants and especially the finalists.

The Men’s Bowling Club continues to be very busy. We journeyed to Merimbula for the State Pennant Playoff and although we participated in the strongest section we didn’t produce our best on the Saturday and were beaten by Taren Point (2013 Winners) and Cabramatta (2012 Winners). On the Sunday morning we did much better defeating Valentine who were co – leaders with Taren Point. Taren Point went on to win the State Flag. This year is our first year in Champions League. We have performed creditably being beaten in tie breakers in 3 games and winning against State Runner Ups Belrose. We still have 3 games to play. Two new players joined the club, Steven Harry and Don Strickland and they will add strength to our playing personal. The 5 A Side Mid - Week competition in Zone 10 is well under way. We entered 2 A Grade and 1 C Grade. The C Grade side has performed very well, where the A Grade side has been used to help players gain experience.

congratulations Walter on being Runner Up

The 2013 Zone 10 Rookie Pairs Qualifying at The Hills comprised 12 teams made up from players from 11 clubs including; Brush Park, Castle Hill, Carlingford, Dural, Gladesville,

Merrylands, Northmead, Pennant Hills, Putney, The Hills and Toongabbie. These teams were placed into four sections of three teams, each to play each other in a round robin format to

determine the four section winners who would proceed to the finals.

Section one was a close affair with all three sides registering a win, but it was the Pennant Hills side of Phil Briggs and Graham Davis who progressed to the finals courtesy of their +5 margin. Section 2 winners Jarod McCarthy & Alex McDonald from Gladesville, Section 3 winners Sam

Porto & Brad Tonkiss The Hills and Section 4 winners the composite side of Greg Daniels Dural & Greg Taylor Brush Park all progressed to the finals with more clear cut section victories, with

each of the these teams posting two wins from as many matches.

Page 8: The views in this News Letter are those of the author, Mark … · Mark Golby, Jamie Richards Ashfield, Darren Clarke & James Cook 17 Mason Lewis, Andrew Bush, Rod Gordon & Brendon

The first semi-final saw the Pennant Hills taking on the Gladesville. The first 5 ends were very close, the score 4 – 3 Pennant Hills way as each team took turns in scoring small multiples. The

sixth end however was disastrous for the Penno pair as they dropped a full count of 6 to trail 9 – 4. They tried hard to fight back, but unable to overcome the deficit, went down 13 – 9.

The second Semi-Final was very tight as The Hills boys took on pre-tournament favourites Greg

Taylor and Greg Daniels in the composite side. Sam and Brad from The Hills pounced to an early lead of 5 -0 after 3 ends, before the Brush Park – Dural combination hit back claiming the next 6 ends to take a 5 shot lead 10 – 5. A four to The Hills on end 10 narrowed the margin to

just 1 and then a two on the following end saw them hit the lead 11-10 with just the one end to play. The final end was a see-sawing affair, but it was the composite side who shone through,

hanging onto a 2 shot pick-up to take victory 12-11 in a very memorable match.

The Final between Gladesville and the composite Greg’s took place early Sunday morning. The greater experience of the Dural-Brush Park pairing, Greg Taylor last year’s Zone 10 Rookies

winner and Greg Daniels the current Dural CC club champion, had them able to get an early read on the pace and line of the green and resulted in them shooting 12 – 2 lead after just 5 ends. Gladesville staged a mini-comeback winning the 6th and 7th ends, but despite the best efforts of

young Jarod McCarthy and super-sub Alex McDonald, fine play from the two Gregs stayed their charge and they went on to record a fine 15-6 victory.

The final round of the Zone 10 5 A Side competition was played yesterday and there were some

very close sections with the finalists not decided until this round in some Grades. Thanks to all

that participated and congratulations to the players and Clubs that did make it through to the

post sectional play offs. The final tables are shown below for each grade –

www.zone10.org.au

The Zone 10 website is a wealth of information of event programme, draws, results, club events, By-laws, Regulations and Conditions of Play, Club information and Entry Forms. I encourage all members of Zone 10 to “hit’ the website at least once a week as a further way of keeping informed on the happenings within Zone 10. You can also view the edition of “In The Zone” on this website. It is hoped that you let all your bowling friends and family know about this link so that they too can keep up to date with the happenings in and involving Zone 10 and they too can be “In The Zone”
