Resident Spotlight Alex Nastas

Alex Nastas, Meridian Ranch resident, stays busy between officer training school, being a dad to his two sons and a husband to his wife. Yet, that doesn’t mean he can’t find time to prioritize his health.
In the month of December, Nastas visited the Meridian Ranch Recreation Center more than anyone else in the community. In asking him what motivates him to exercise nearly every day, he says that it stems from his childhood.
“When I was younger, I was kind of chubby,” says Nastas. “My senior year I joined the wrestling team and went from 230 lbs to 195 lbs. I liked the way I felt, so I kept at it.”
Kept at it he has, with a total of 29 visits to the Recreation Center in December. Alex shared he typically works out three hours each day. He does cardio first thing in the morning and will add in some strength training. If he does two workouts a day, he will do a small amount of cardio in the afternoon and get in a good abdominal workout.
While Nastas may be in what many would consider competitive shape, he maintains, “I just want to be functional. I’m going to officer training school and I want to make sure I go there in my best (shape).”
Nastas isn’t the only one in his family who uses the Recreation Center. His two sons love to use the pool.
“They take swim lessons there, and are almost at the level to earn their green band. They also really like the lazy river,” he says.
Nastas believes the Recreation Center is just part of what makes Meridian Ranch a great community.
“It’s a nice, safe, growing community where everything is in reach. We have great neighbors, and it feels like we take care of each other.”

News from the DRCJanuary brought warm temperatures with little to no moisture. Please remember when the temperatures reach 40 degrees or warmer it is nice to give the shrubs, trees and grass a drink of water. It is advised by professional landscapers to water approximately one minute per shrub and 2-3 minutes per tree. It is crucial to winter water your evergreens such as pine and spruce trees. Not watering can lead to plant damage. Please check out the CSU Extension website, http://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/garden, for more information on preventing winter damage to your yard. Remember, front yards have a minimum requirement for trees and shrubs, and if you lose them to winter kill, then they will need to be replaced in the spring.
Once the plants have received a good watering, they will also appreciate getting mulch around them. Now is a good time to assess your hardscape and replenish the mulch on your property. Your plants will appreciate it too, as it helps keep the moisture in the ground. Replenish mulch beds with mulch that is natural in color, with no added pigment.

Homeowners’ Committee Report:The Meridian Ranch Homeowners’ Committee met on Jan. 4, 2018 at the Rec Center. The MSMD board meeting notes were reviewed and discussion topics included the following:
• Rec Center and classes offered
• Londonderry crosswalks
• Review of the Budget Fund totals
• Possible posting of instructions regarding upcoming Board member elections at the MSMD office at the Shops and also in the Meridian Ranch newsletter
• Categories of DRC Violations
• An Easy Reference Contact List and its inclusion in the new homeowner’s letter and possibly in the Meridian Ranch newsletter.
Bill Gessner and Wayne Reorda, Meridian Ranch residents and Board Members, were very helpful in answering questions and clarifying issues. The meeting lasted just over an hour. The Committee is still looking for members to represent each neighborhood in Meridian Ranch. All Meridian Ranch residents are welcome at the meetings.
The next meeting will be held on February 8th at 6:00 pm at the Rec Center

Winter Garden Tips (Too Much) Salt and Plants, a Bad CombinationWe are approaching the time when icy streets and sidewalks may again make walking and driving hazardous. Ice melting products can help keep us safe, however these products vary in their ice melting abilities and safety to nearby plants. There are 5 main materials that are used as deicers:
Calcium chloride is the traditional ice-melting product. Though it will melt ice to minus 25 degrees F, it will form slippery, slimy surfaces on concrete and other hard surfaces. Plants are not likely to be harmed unless excessive amounts are used. It is fast acting and more effective than rock salt. This product can damage grass and plants if over applied.
Rock salt is sodium chloride and is the least expensive material available. It is effective to approximately 20 degrees F, but can damage soils, plants, metals, and paving surfaces.
Magnesium chloride is effective down to minus 13 degrees F, and is more effective than sodium chloride. (This, and the next 2 products, can also damage plants if over-applied.)
Potassium chloride is effective down to 25 degrees.
Urea is a fertilizer that is sometimes used to melt ice. Though it is only about 10% as corrosive as sodium chloride, it can contaminate ground and surface water with nitrates. Urea is effective down to 10 degrees F, but works better between 25-30 degrees F.
Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), a newer product, is made from dolomitic limestone and acetic acid (the principal compound of vinegar). CMA works differently than the other materials in that it does not form brine like salt, but rather helps prevent snow particles from sticking to each other on surfaces. It has little effect on plant growth, but can damage concrete surfaces. Less corrosive than chloride products, be aware that performance decreases below 20 degrees F.

FRENCH ONION SOUP Ingredients
• 4 pounds yellow onions, peeled and thinly sliced (approximately 5-6 large onions)
• 3 tablespoons butter
• 4 cloves garlic, minced
• 3 tablespoons flour
• 1/2 cup dry white wine
• 6 cups of beef stock
• 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
• 1 bay leaf
• 3 sprigs of thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
• a few generous pinches of salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
• baguette
• grated cheese (Gruyere, Asagio, Swiss, or Mozzarella)
DirectionsIn a large heavy-bottomed stockpot, melt the butter over medium-high heat.
Add the onions and sauté until well browned and caramelized (but not burnt), about 30-40 minutes, stirring every few minutes.
Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Stir in the flour and cook for an additional 1 minute.
Stir in the wine to deglaze the pan, using a wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits on the bottom of the pan.
Add the stock, Worcestershire sauce (optional), bay leaf, and thyme. Bring to a simmer. Then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for at least 10-15 minutes, partially-covered.
Season to taste with salt and pepper. Discard the bay leaf and sprigs of thyme.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. While the soup is simmering, slice the baguette into 1-inch thick pieces and arrange them in single layer on baking sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes, until the bread is toasted and golden around the edges. Remove and set aside.
Switch the oven to the broiler. When ready to serve the soup, top with a baguette slice and your desired amount of cheese. Place on an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat and broil for 2-4 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Remove and serve immediately.

Manager’s Message, February 2018We sometimes get requests from residents to fly our flags at half-staff in honor of the passing of some local law enforcement officer or other notable person. However, only the President of the United States can order the lowering of the American flag and only the President or Governor can order the lowering of the State flag. District personnel receive automated email
messages whenever the President makes such an order. Only then will we lower our flags to half-staff.
According to USClimateData.com, the average snowfall in Colorado Springs during December is 6 inches, and the average snowfall in January is 6 inches. During December, 2017 we saw only 2 days of snow totaling less than 1 inch. At the time of this article, it has not yet snowed in January and there is no forecast of snow in January.
Occasional winter watering during a warm spell is recommended, especially for grass and immature trees. Using a hose to hand water will avoid having to drain irrigation systems again before the next freeze. Remember to disconnect and drain the hose after watering. You may notice the District’s landscape contractors performing mid-winter watering in parks and open spaces in Meridian Ranch.
Please remember that snow and ice conditions will likely occur later this winter and early spring and you should make appropriate preparations. Every year the District experiences damage to landscaping and irrigation systems when impatient drivers go outside the roadway to pass vehicles stranded in snow (especially on Londonderry Drive
near the Recreation Center). Driving outside the roadway is illegal and the damage to our landscaped grounds is expensive. If you witness this happening, please report the vehicle license number and description of the driver.
Finally, please keep your children away from frozen ponds – they are extremely unsafe.

A: For homes purchased after December 14, 2017, the new laws limit deductibility of mortgage interest to the first $750,000 of debt attributed to the purchase of your home. For homes purchased prior to this date and under the old laws, interest on debt of up to $1m may still be deductible.
Q: In 2018 I plan to take out a home equity loan to make improvements to my primary residence. Can I still deduct this interest?
A: The new tax laws specifically prohibit a tax deduction for interest on home equity lines.
Q: Will I still be able to deduct the property taxes I pay during 2018?
A: Yes, within limits. The new tax laws prohibit total deductions in excess of $10,000 for state and local taxes paid, which include income taxes, and personal property taxes such as real estate, and automobile taxes. Any related taxes paid in excess of the $10,000 threshold, are non-deductible in 2018.
Q: If I sell my primary residence in 2018, will I be taxed?
A: Unlikely, if meeting the IRS guidelines for ownership and use set forth in IRC sec. 121. The exclusion of gain for individuals of $250k and $500k for married couples remains intact for 2018.
Q: I pre-paid an estimate of my 2017 real estate property taxes on December 31, 2017, prior to being assessed by my county. Can I deduct this on my 2017 income tax returns?
A: Generally, a tax deduction for federal purposes is allowable when a few criteria are met: 1) The taxpayer has been made aware in writing, of the liability (in other words, assessed); 2) The assessment and corresponding tax payment both occurred during the 2017 calendar-year.
Q: I am an employee, and required to maintain a home office. How will my home office deductions be impacted for 2018?
A: Under the new 2018 laws, no deduction for employee-related expenses will be allowed. This includes home office expenses properly claimed through the 2017 tax-year. We would suggest discussing a possible reimbursement plan, with your employer.

Firefighters Remind Residents to Stay
Off the Ice!In mid-December, Falcon firefighters
witnessed kids playing on an ice-covered pond in the Meridian Ranch area. By the time the crew returned to the pond everyone had left, but footprints and tracks from bicycle tires remained on the snow-covered surface of the pond. There was also evidence that someone had tried to chop a hole in the ice away from the shore. All of this occurred despite signs warning people to keep off the ice. While no one had to be rescued that day, this story could easily have ended with a needless tragedy. In January 2016, two teenagers died after falling into a frozen retention pond in Parker, Colorado.
El Paso County has a number of natural and manmade lakes and ponds. However, unlike other places in the country, the ice that forms here is typically not thick enough to walk on or skate on, even late in the winter. Falcon firefighters train in ice rescue techniques, but those are skills they would rather not have to use.
Firefighters are asking parents to teach their children to stay off outdoor ice, and talk to them about the dangers of playing on or near iced-over water. Once a person falls into icy water, hypothermia sets in quickly and muscle control is lost. Permanent injury and even death can occur.
Keep these ice safety tips in mind.
• Ice in Colorado is deceptive and cannot bejudged strictly by its appearance. Just because itlooks safe does not mean that it is.
• Beware of ice covered with snow, since snowcan actually insulate ice from cold air andprevent it from freezing solid.
• Keep pets leashed when near an ice-coveredpond so they cannot chase geese or otheranimals onto thin ice.
• If a pet runs onto ice or falls through it, do notfollow. Call for help.

High Tea at Glen Eyrie Castle By Roberta Loughman
The perfect way to enjoy an afternoon of enchantment and history! Served in the Castle Music Room.
Glen Eyrie is an English Tudor-style castle built by General William Jackson Palmer, the founder of Colorado Springs. There are 17 guest rooms in the castle, as well as 4 meeting rooms, 2 dining rooms and 24 fireplaces. The castle was advanced for its time, featuring a primitive intercom system, and a chimney system that would hold the smoke until the wind was blowing in the right direction to take the smoke out of the valley. Glen Eyrie is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The castle is now owned by The Navigators. The general public is allowed on its grounds Monday through Thursday (9-4) to visit its bookstore, located at the Carriage House. Tours of Glen Eyrie Castle are available to the public and require an advance reservation.
