Many of the large towns, d prlv· ed of the former stream of recru! from the country, are fast changing from Anglo·' on to eltlc nnd from Protestant to atholic.

5. In the last thirty years the colle hav beeu strengthened ill endowments aod appliances, and are doing a bett r nnd wider work than formerly; the larger towns haveexct'llent highscbool~, and the well-endowed academies nr strong and well attended. But, with the rural districts far removed from th advantages, there is no provision for s condary education. The ungrad· ed di trict school, with it brief 8clio I term, is the beginning and the end of local opportunities. The unendow€d academies of forty years ago, then filled with young people, are dead and bave left no succe sors. It is true, Borne young people r ort to the high schools and endowed academies, but econdary education here is far less g neral than in the former time, while mnny are lost to the coli ge and highpr education whom a good local academy of the old type would stimulate to an extended course of study. In one of the most picturesque distriCts of New Hamp· hire is an endowed academy that thirty·

five years ago had an annual attendance of more than four hundred, and sent to colleg each year thirty boys, to say nothing of a dozen girls as \Vell alld widely trained, for whom no college opened its doors. The same school haB 1 than one-fourth the old number of students and graduates. It Is fair to say that the decadence of this chool Is partly due to the larger advantages offered by better eqnipped rivals, but the main cause of decline is the dearth f JU WILL
