The Self-Directed Search® (SDS®) Veterans and Military Occupations FinderTM (VMOF) Online Edition includes the Military to Civilian Occupations Crosswalk, which lists active Military Occupations Codes (MOCs) from each of the five branches (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy) along with corresponding civilian occupations and two-letter Holland Occupation Codes (HOCs). Using these two classifications, users can locate HOCs for military occupations and their cor-responding civilian occupations. This allows users to better understand how they might apply the skills and abilities they developed while in the military to potential civilian occupations with similar requirements.

The VMOF is designed to be used in conjunction with SDS Assessment Booklet (Holland & Messer, 2013a), which provides the user with his or her Summary Code. With the VMOF, individuals will use only the first two letters of their Summary Codes. For example, if the person’s Summary code is SER, he or she will only use the first two letters, SE.

In addition to the Online Edition of the VMOF, a printed version is also available that includes a Military Occupations Index, which lists active MOCs from each of the five branches of the military. MOCs are listed alphabetically by branch, and each MOC includes a corresponding two-letter Holland Occupational Code (HOC). To purchase the full version of the VMOF, visit www.parinc.com.

Summary CodeA Summary Code, which summarizes a person’s resemblance to each of the six Holland personality types, is derived from the responses obtained by completing the SDS. The following is a brief description of the six personality types and their corresponding occupations:

Realistic (R) types usually have mechanical and athletic abilities; they like to work outdoors and with tools and machines. They typically like to work with things more than with people. The R type is described as conforming, frank, genuine, hardheaded, honest, humble, materialistic, modest, natural, normal, persistent, practical, shy, and thrifty. Realistic occupations include skilled trades, technical occupations, and some service occupations.

Investigative (I) types usually have mathematical and scientific abilities and like to work alone. They typically like to explore and understand things or events, rather than persuade others or sell them things. The I type is described as analytical, cautious, complex, critical, curious, independent, intellectual, introverted, methodical, modest, pessimistic, precise, rational, and reserved. Investigative occupations include scientific occupations and some technical occupations.

Artistic (A) types usually have artistic skills, enjoy creating original work, and have a good imagination. They are described as creative, disorderly, emotional, expressive, idealistic, imaginative, impractical, impulsive, indepen-dent, introspective, intuitive, nonconforming, open, and original. Artistic occupations include artistic, musical, and literary occupations.

Social (S) types usually like to be around other people, are interested in how people get along, and like to help other people with their problems. They typically like to help, teach, and counsel people more than engage in mechanical or technical activities. The S type is described as convincing, cooperative, friendly, generous, helpful, idealistic, kind, patient, responsible, social, sympathetic, tactful, understanding, and warm. Social occupations include educational and social service occupations.

Enterprising (E) types usually have leadership and speaking abilities, are interested in money and politics, and like to influence people. They typically like to persuade or direct others more than work on scientific or compli-cated topics. The E type is described as acquisitive, adventurous, agreeable, ambitious, attention-getting, domi-neering, energetic, extroverted, impulsive, optimistic, pleasure-seeking, popular, self-confident, and sociable. Enterprising occupations include managerial and sales occupations.

Conventional (C) types usually have clerical and math abilities; they like to work indoors and organize things. They typically like to follow orderly routines and meet clear standards, avoiding work that does not have clear directions. The C type is described as conforming, conscientious, careful, efficient, inhibited, obedient, orderly, persistent, practical, thrifty, and unimaginative. Conventional occupations include office and clerical occupations.

The Military to Civilian Occupations Crosswalk includes information about civilian occupations taken from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) database (2013a). The O*NET database, which is continually updated, con-tains descriptions of hundreds of civilian occupations. The O*NET also offers a crosswalk that links military occupations with corresponding O*NET occupations that have similar characteristics. This crosswalk is the basis of this classification system. In this Crosswalk, the Summary Code provides a description of these corresponding O*NET civilian occupations. For example, the Army occupation of Aircraft Electrician is linked to the civilian occupation of Avionics Technician, which was assigned the Summary Code RI. This means that Avionics Technician, a civilian occupation which is similar to Aircraft Electrician, resembles the Realistic type the most, followed by the Investigative type.

O*NETTM CodesEight-digit O*NET codes can also be found in the Military to Civilian Occupations Crosswalk. These codes can be used to locate additional information for an occupation on the O*NET Web site (O*NET, 2013a). Users can search the O*NET Crosswalk (www.onetonline.org/crosswalk) to explore occupations that correspond to their military positions. Under the Military section, select the branch and then type in the MOC. The Crosswalk search provides detailed information, includ-ing educational requirements, skills, activities, and related occupations.

Making the Most of the SDSOnce a Summary Code is obtained from the SDS Assessment Booklet, users should search the SDS Occupations Finder (Holland, Messer, & PAR Staff, 2013) for every possible combination of their three-letter Summary Code to identify occu-pations (see “What Your Summary Code Means” in the SDS Assessment Booklet). The VMOF can be used in conjunction with these other materials to help users discover what civilian positions are linked to specific MOCs and their associated Summary Codes. During career counseling, it may be useful to examine the HOC of a person’s current or previous military occupation to explore which aspects they like or dislike. The VMOF is the only resource that provides HOCs for military positions. Users may also use the two-letter HOC associated with their MOC to explore occupations in The Occupations Finder that contain those letters. It is also recommended that users explore their aspirational occupation codes (see Holland & Messer, 2013b).

It is important to note that there are some limitations to the VMOF. First, each branch of the military handles the catalog-ing of military positions in a different fashion, and the way that military positions are added, revised, or eliminated is not consistently documented. The Military Occupations Index and Military to Civilian Occupations Crosswalk include both enlisted and officer occupations across the five military branches. If limited information was available on a specific MOC, it may have been excluded from either the Index or the Crosswalk. If a MOC is not listed in the Military Occupations Index, the user should explore MOCs with similar titles or job duties to find a close match. This has happened fairly rarely among the listings for the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, and Marines. However, within the Navy listings, there is very limited information available on more than 1,400 officer positions. As a result, only enlisted MOCs have been included for the Navy. For more information on the Navy officer positions, please visit the veterans section of the SDS Web site (www.self-directed-search.com).

In addition, only one civilian occupation is provided for each MOC in the Crosswalk section. There are likely several civilian occupations that are a close match and overlap in terms of environment and skills. The use of the SDS Occupations Finder is encouraged as a way to explore multiple occupational opportunities.

Another limitation is that not all MOCs are linked to a civilian occupation. As a result, there are several MOCs listed in the Military Occupations Index that do not appear in the Military to Civilian Occupations Crosswalk. In these instances, users should rely on The Occupations Finder to explore occupations linked with both their SDS-derived Summary Codes as well as the Summary Codes identified in the Military Occupations Index that correspond to their MOC.

Remember, no single resource or test can provide one “right” choice for an individual who is exploring occupational opportunities. However, the SDS and related resources, including the VMOF, can help a user focus on some of the strong-est possibilities.

Recently, the O*NET initiated My Next Move for Veterans, a program for U.S. veterans who are current job seekers (O*NET, 2013b). This online resource is designed to help veterans find civilian careers that are similar to the jobs they held in the military. My Next Move for Veterans is part of a larger U.S. government effort to address the high unemploy-ment rate among veterans, which was 12.1% as of 2011 (Stein-McCormick, Osborn, Hayden, & Van Hoose, 2013), and cited as high as 20.4% for post-9/11 veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 in 2012 (BLS, 2013).

A crosswalk between MOC and O*NET Occupations was created for the My Next Move for Veterans program that directly links MOC titles to O*NET occupational titles (O*NET, 2013b). This crosswalk was used to develop the VMOF.

An expert panel (see below) provided feedback throughout the development process. The panel included five mem-bers who have either military experience and/or experience counseling clients with military histories. The expert panel reviewed part of the crosswalk and provided feedback on (a) the match between the MOC and O*NET occupations, (b) additional matches that could be made for unmatched MOCs, and (c) HOCs for MOCs. Due to the large number of MOCs in the crosswalk and the lack of available information on the MOCs, this task was challenging; however, the panel provided feedback that led to significant improvements to the original conceptualization of the classification.

First, it was determined that only “active” military positions (as identified in the O*NET crosswalk database) would be included in this classification. Next, the panel recommended that one classification would focus on providing HOCs for all MOCs for which reliable information could be obtained; a second classification would focus on the crosswalk between the MOC and O*NET occupations. This classification would also include HOCs, but they would be based on the O*NET occu-pation description. Because of the lack of detailed information, it was decided that only two-letter HOCs would be used in this classification (as compared to three-letter codes which are used in the SDS Occupations Finder).

Once the indexes were compiled and all two-letter codes were assigned, the expert panel reviewed the VMOF and pro-vided feedback on the HOC assignments. Finally, two independent quality assurance specialists reviewed the VMOF to ensure the accuracy of the indexes.
