TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The Lord G is my help; who will prove me wrong? (Isaiah 50:5-9a). Psalm — I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — Faith, if it does not have works, is dead (James 2:14-18). Gospel — Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:27-35). LISTENING AND RESPONDING There are three interwoven themes in today’s read-ings: listening to God, faith vs. good works, and losing our life in order to find it. How are they related? The Suffering Servant of Isaiah undergoes much dis-tress and ridicule, but is able to bear it because he has lis-tened to the promptings of God day after day. The psalm tells us that God listens, too. God hears our prayers for help and is always ready to save us. As our faith deepens, so does our desire to do the works of justice and charity that build up the reign of God. God directs our actions in ways we often cannot see, and we don’t always see the results. We are called upon in faith to trust that what we do is enough, and that willingness to listen to God’s promptings will lead us in the right way.

Hand-Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land

Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land. Do you know there are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood? The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from “Star of Bethlehem Group” came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them work-ing in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales 0goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. Star of Bethlehem has been ap-proved by many bishops, and diocese of Jerusalem. Please take a look at these beautiful artifacts September 15th&16th.

WHO ARE THE MEN OF ST. JOSEPH? We are the Men of St. Joseph, a group of Catholic guys dedicated to being the spiritual leaders of our families while becoming the best versions of ourselves. Sure, it's a struggle to balance being a father, bread winner, businessman, coach, friend, hus-band and spiritual leader of your family. The Men of St. Joseph understand that with each oth-er's support and shared accountability it becomes a little easier. Most importantly, we know that if we surrender our day-to-day problems to God we will be better fathers, husbands and friends. Through Christ, we will be better men. We welcome you to join us on this journey. Come on, give it a shot on September 23rd at 11:30 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church Mężczyźni Świętego Józefa Kim są Mężczyźni Świętego Józefa? Nasz Pan Jezus Chrystus przyszedł, aby poka-zać nam Miłość i my odkrywamy naszą rolę jako mężczyźni, którzy dostrzegają potrzeby inne niż poszukiwanie mocy i przywilejów (Łk 22,25). Mężczyźni Świętego Józefa to katolicka sieć mężczyzn. Pierwsze, inicjujące grupę spotkanie w naszej parafii odbędzie się w niedzielę 23go września 2018, o 11:30 (po mszy świętej). Serdecznie zapraszamy.

We NEED YOU!

When Our Phone Rings, Will You Answer It?

Somewhere in the world, a lost soul is dialing our toll-free number hop-ing to find help. Will you answer that call?

If God is calling you to help others, consider becoming a phone counse-lor for The Upper Room Crisis Hotline. We are a Faith-Based Hotline in the Catholic tradition providing counseling and referral assistance to an-yone struggling to find his or her way back to God. We help everyone re-

gardless of their faith or background.

To be a phone counselor, you don’t need experience in mental health or phone work, although it is helpful. What you will need is a love

for people and a strong desire to help the lonely, frightened, and con-fused.

We provide all the training.

If this ministry touches your heart, please call Sr. Mary Frances Seeley at 815-341-9124, or email [email protected] with questions. Our next training session begins September 11th. You can also check us out at catholichotline.org. Thank you and God bless!
