18 FAMILY WEEKEND 2014 THE VANDERBILT HUSTLER u WWW.VANDERBILTHUSTLER.COM
Explore the historic neighborhoods around campus, and you’ll find concentrations of restaurants, shops and landmarks in areas locals refer to as Hillsboro Village, Elliston Place and Midtown. This guide will give you an idea of what to expect in each. Some of the hot spots are highlighted here, but when you explore these areas, you’re sure to discover plenty of other Nashville gems.
HILLSBORO VILLAGEAt the southeastern corner of campus, along 21st Avenue, which becomes Hillsboro Road, some of Nashville’s most beloved eateries and unique shops like bookstore BookManBookWoman and gift shop A Thousand Faces on 21st Avenue attract visitors and locals alike. Don’t miss the historic Belcourt Theatre while you’re there. The village can easily be toured on foot, and if needed, parking is available in metered spots on the street and in surface lots behind the shops.
Pancake Pantry1796 21st Ave. S. • 615-383-9333If you had to choose just one restaurant to visit in Nashville, the Pancake Pantry would be it. Go hungry and expect to wait in a line that’s just part of the tradition (it shouldn’t take too long). Try the old fashioned buttermilk pancakes
or branch out with the buckwheat cakes, blintzes or sweet potato pancakes. The breakfast and lunch menus offer variety and dishes that are consistently delicious - and filling.
Pangea1721 21st Ave. S. • 615-269-9665Hillsboro Village is home to several unique shops located along 21st Avenue from Blakemore to Acklen avenues. Don’t miss the eclectic Pangea, which sells clothing, jewelry and gifts from around the world. There’s something for everyone, and a visit to Pangea provides adventure and even a few laughs when you check out some of the quirkier gifts.
Sunset Grill2001 Belcourt Ave. • 615-386-3663Dinner at Sunset Grill is laid-back, good for groups small or large, and flavorful. Serving “affordable casual fine dining since 1990,” Sunset Grill uses sustainable local and organic products wherever possible, offering an extensive wine list and dishes including the popular Voodoo Pasta, a house smoked pork chop, several seafood entrees and one of the most extensive dessert menus in town.
ELLISTON PLACEBeyond busy West End Avenue, you’ll find Elliston Place running from 25th Avenue to 21st. Look
for unusual shops like Rock Block Guitars and Smack Clothing. While there’s no shortage of reliable chain restaurants, from Jet’s Pizza and Jersey Mike’s Subs to Jamba Juice and Dunkin’ Donuts, the following spots are one-of-a-kind Music City treasures.
Rotier’s Restaurant2413 Elliston Pl. • 615-327-9892Since 1945, Rotier’s has been serving burgers, milkshakes and beer to Vanderbilt students, Nashville residents and out-of-towners. Known as one of Nashville’s “meat-and-three” restaurants, Rotier’s offers that popular menu selection of a main protein with a variety of sides. The unique “hamburger on French bread” tastes great in the cozy, dimly lit Nashville landmark.
Samurai Sushi2209 Ellison Pl. • 615-320-5438Elliston Place is home to unique destinations, and the award-winning Samurai Sushi is no different - it’s where sushi lovers will want to visit. Order the famous Choo Choo Roll, an eel roll topped with sliced strawberries and peanuts. Other menu items consistently please discerning palettes, even in this tiny, unassuming restaurant.
NIGHTLIFEOn Nashville’s “Rock Block,” live music can be found almost every night at Exit/In (2208 Elliston Pl., 615-321-3340), which has featured a diverse list of musicians - with an emphasis on rock - since opening in 1971. Across the street and off the beaten path, The End (2219 Elliston Pl., 615-321-4457) hosts indie-rock artists. Another nearby Nashville institution is legendary bar and restaurant The Gold Rush (2205 Elliston Pl., 615-321-1160), known for its “bean rolls” and late-night hours.
MIDTOWNWhere Broadway and Division Street peel out of 21st Avenue
on the northeast side of campus, Midtown begins. It’s home to nationally acclaimed trendsetters that require some pre-planning to get into - the Catbird Seat restaurant and The Patterson House speakeasy. But there’s plenty to do in Midtown without a reservation. If bar-hopping is your thing, try “gastro-pub” Tavern, Broadway Brewhouse, Red Door Saloon, Losers, and, of course, next door is Winners. For daytime dining and entertainment, check out the following suggestions.
Noshville1918 Broadway • 615-329-6674This authentic New York-style delicatessen is a cheerful place for a hearty breakfast, lunch or dinner. The menu is extensive, featuring delicious omelettes, French toast, and enormous salads and sandwiches. Noshville’s matzah ball soup and black & white cookies are standouts, as are “Carnegie’s Famous Desserts,” including cheesecake.
Hattie B’s Hot Chicken112 19th Ave. S. • 615-678-4794Like “meat-and-threes,” “hot chicken” restaurants help define Nashville’s notable casual-cuisine favorites. At Hattie B’s, choose your heat level, from no heat to “Shut the Cluck Up!” Add some sides, and you’re good to go. Just be sure to keep the paper towels handy.
MUSIC ROWBegin your walking tour of Music Row at Musica, the statue featuring nine dancing figures, by Nashville artist Alan LeQuire. The notable work of art is at the center of the roundabout, accessible by following Division Street toward Downtown. From the roundabout, take a leisurely stroll on Music Square East/16th Avenue to see BMI, Warner Bros Records and the iconic Bobby’s Idle Hour Tavern. Along Music Square West/17th Avenue, check out BNA Records, Historic RCA Studio B and Sony.
