The UWA Fogarty FoundationSCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2017
The UWA Fogarty Foundation
Scholarship Program
The UWA Fogarty Scholarship Program aims to strengthen our community
by investing in exceptional young people who use their skills and commitment
to lead positive change in our community, state and nation.
Established in 2004, the UWA Fogarty Scholarship Program is a joint initiative
of the Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia.
The program is one of Australia’s premier scholarship programs, working
with local and international leaders, to provide Scholars and alumni with
comprehensive academic scholarships, enrichment opportunities, leadership
development and strong networks.
10 new scholarships are awarded each year to students who study across
a range of disciplines. UWA Fogarty Undergraduate Scholars who choose
to continue their postgraduate study at UWA are also supported in their
further studies.
The scholarships include a tailored leadership program for the Scholar’s
entire university degree that focuses on developing transformative leadership
skills in each of the Scholars. The leadership program is a key element of the
scholarships, where Scholars learn from, and have access to, a network of
leaders, gain some insight into how our community works and hopefully the
awareness of how they can make a contribution now and in the future.
In 2017 we have 54 Scholars and 72 Alumni who are studying, working and
making a contribution.
Fogarty Foundation:
Creating OpportunityRealising Potential
The UWA Fogarty Foundation
Leadership Program
The Fogarty Foundation and The University of Western Australia view leadership
as an integral factor in building strong communities.
UWA Fogarty Scholars participate in a tailored Leadership Program that
provides Scholars and Alumni with an excellent opportunity to learn from
today’s leaders.
The Leadership Program expands Scholars’ horizons by initiating opportunities
for the Scholars to learn from and have access to, a network of leaders, gain
insight into how our community works and how they can positively make
a contribution.
The UWA Fogarty Scholars study across a range of disciplines and as they
graduate they become members of the UWA Fogarty Scholars Alumni. The
alumni is a network of talented and motivated young people working in a
variety of professions that will provide ongoing support and affinity between
the Scholars as they evolve into their leadership roles within the community.

Learn Grow which is a trip she always look forward to. She has also
spent time volunteering at the evacuation centre during the horrific
southwest bushfires and found it very fulfilling to be able to utilise the
qualifications she had and put them to good use.
In 2016 Breanna travelled to Boston on university exchange for six
months. She had an incredible experience and found it wonderful to
experience university in another country where it is run so differently.
Travelling both before and after was phenomenal and allowed her to see
so much of the country that she called home for the semester.
Breanna is looking forward to another full-on year and hopes to make
the most of the many Fogarty series and events that occur throughout
the year.

Joshua Dunne
Course of Study: Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) majoring in Business
Law and Political Science & International Relations
A strong believer that he who travels wide will go far, Joshua commences
2017’s academic calendar having spent only four weeks of the previous
six months in WA. His journeys included a semester’s exchange at
Université Jean Moulin, Lyon 3 in the south of France and the 2017
Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp, held in Adelaide.
He recommenced his musical endeavours in Perth by performing with
WA Opera in their 50 year anniversary concert and sings passionately
in the UWA Vocal Consort, Voyces and St George’s Cathedral Choir.
This year, Joshua assumes the role of Principal Double Bass of the WA
Youth Orchestra, where he hopes to lead his section and motivate this
exceptional ensemble to even greater heights.
Joshua loves to give time towards sharing his passions – performing at
Royal Perth Hospital, supporting youth theatre groups across the state,
volunteering for his Fencing Club, adjudicating Rostrum Voice of Youth
Public Speaking and making music as a representative of UWA at Open
Days or functions throughout Perth.
Moving into the third year of the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), he

leadership activities which have made the past two years so enjoyable.
2016 began with a study abroad to Stuttgart, Germany to study German.
Once she returned home Adehlia became heavily involved in the UWA
community as President of the UWA Italian Club, Vice President of
the Fogarty Scholars Association, Vice President of Activities for the
Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) Union (BPhil Union) and, recently,
President of BPhil Union.
Adehlia’s involvement in the broader community included being a

19THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Michael Hooper
Course of Study: Bachelor of Science with Assured Pathway
to Medicine
Michael graduated from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School as the
school Dux in 2014. For the past two years he has thrown himself into life
at St George’s College, directing the college’s Mockingbirds a cappella
group, founding the St George’s College Jazz Band and running free
music classes for residents. He looks forward to the expansion of these
classes onto a YouTube channel in 2017, as well as the release of his
first EP. He has also applied his leadership and mentoring skills to the
roles of Summer Duty Manager, O-Week Crew member and Facilitator
on St George’s Summer High School Program.
Michael hopes to pursue a career in emergency medicine after
completing his Bachelor of Science majoring in Genetics. He plans to fit
as much music between science classes as possible.
20 THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Jonathon Kammann
Course of Study: Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) majoring in Geology
and Botany
Jonathon grew up on the family farm near Manjimup and finished year
12 in 2014 at Manjimup Senior High School, after spending the year
as Head Boy. With strong interests in all things outdoors undertaking
a Bachelor of Philosophy with a double major in Geology and Botany
seemed ideal. Geology seems to like him as much as he likes it,
resulting in the Westernex field geology award for the best second year
field geologist and the opportunity to represent UWA at the 2016 ANZIC
IODP Masterclass in New Zealand (a masterclass with a particular focus
on marine geology and coring). Despite this, the zeal for dinosaurs which
drove him into Geology has been waning over the past few semesters
and a change in direction may be on the horizon.
When not at St Catherine’s College (who are kind enough to keep him
while he’s in Perth), Jonathon can be found chasing a football for his
beloved Australian Football League club, the Manjimup Imperials, fishing
remote beaches with his younger brother or scampering over mountain
tops mentoring high school aged kids.
21THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Brayden Keizer
Course of Study: Bachelor of Arts majoring in Political Science &
International Relations and Communications & Media Studies
Brayden is a UWA undergraduate student completing a double-major in
Political Science & International Relations and Economics. During 2016
Brayden developed his leadership skills in a variety of roles, namely as
a tutor and volunteer for Teach Learn Grow (TLG), an organisation that
aims to provide free private academic tutoring for Western Australia’s
disadvantaged rural students. Similarly, he served in a volunteer capacity
for the Friends of MITHRA charity and the Be Inspired Foundation.
Recently, he has translated his academic interest in the economics
and geo-politics of the Indo-Pacific region into action, embarking on a
study-abroad program at the University of Hong Kong through both the
Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship and the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade’s New Colombo Plan Scholarship. These grants have
allowed Brayden to relocate to Hong Kong and study at the prestigious
HKU, where he is also undertaking a Chinese language practicum
and (upon completion of his third year of study) a series of intensive
internships in both the Special Administrative Region and Mainland
China. He is hoping that these experiences will allow him to embellish
his academic qualifications with a regional expertise as he moves into
postgraduate studies and, beyond that, into a career in the fields of
economic policy and international diplomacy.
22 THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Theodore Kenworth-Groen
Course of Study: Bachelor of Science
Theodore Kenworth-Groen recently transferred into the Bachelor of
Philosophy to continue his studies at UWA after graduating from All
Saints’ College in 2014. Awarded an Academic Scholarship to the
College, he has since achieved awards such as the Australian Student
Prize and Top Scorer in the Senior Big Science Competition.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award combined with Caltex Best all-
rounder award and several College House Awards serve as recognition
of his contribution to the Community.
After having been awarded the Southwell Music grant during his time
at school, Theodore has continued to pursue his interest in percussion
through playing in 4 ensembles including the Leeming Area concert
band and Billabong Collective periodically throughout 2015.
Last year Theodore left Canning City’s U/18s State League football team
to debut in the National Premier League for Armadale SC. Theodore
has also resumed playing tennis in U/18s division 1 pennants whilst
building momentum towards the Australian Junior National Athletics
Championships for which he qualified by winning silver in U/20 800m at
this year’s WA State Championships.
A strong passion for sport has created opportunities for Theodore to
travel internationally. After having previously achieved Athlete of the
Meet in Singapore, prior to his football team’s success in Beijing, he
is determined to further his athletic abilities whilst maintaining close
involvement in the community.
23THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Katie McAllister
Course of Study: Bachelor of Commerce with Assured Pathway to
Juris Doctor
Katie is a third year Regional Fogarty Scholar, studying a Bachelor of Arts
majoring in English and Philosophy. She is passionate about regional
Australia and educational equality and to this end she volunteers as the
Regional Officer with the Western Australian Debating League (WADL)
and at every opportunity tells people she is from Albany.
When she isn’t on a regional road trip, she is studying for her Speech
and Drama Licentiate through the AMEB and is busy planning the
Albany Writers Festival for 2018. After being an ABC Heywire winner
and mentor, Katie realised the best thing you could do when you are
from a regional town is not to leave it, but to value it. She is passionate
about stories and the way they connect communities and is currently
working with the Albany community to create and deliver a Writers
Festival tailored to the needs of the city.
She also has her own small marketing business and uses tutoring as a
means to legitimise talking about her love of English. She hopes one day
to be good enough at writing to not have to take up her JD spot and to
give to regional WA all that it has given her.
24 THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2015
Jonathan Pang
Course of Study: Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) with Assured
Pathway to Doctor of Medicine
Jonathan is studying a Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours), majoring in
Physics, with a Direct Pathway into Medicine. Jonathan did Japanese
throughout high school. In his final year of school, he went on a school
music tour; one of his most memorable memories of that trip was a
performance in a tiny town hall in Germany, in which his orchestra
received a standing ovation.
Jonathan decided to take up German in his second year at Uni.
Following that, he spent his summer break enrolled in a six-week
language program at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. He will be
continuing his studies in German this year.
Since commencing his studies at UWA, Jonathan has been involved
in several clubs and co-curricular activities, including the BPhil Union,
Teach Learn Grow, Dr YES and the Fogarty Scholars’ Association. He
currently holds positions on several committees, as Secretary for BPhil
Union and Ordinary Committee Member on the FSA.
Outside of university, he continues to enjoy sailing both competitively
and socially. He holds positions on two separate sailing committees,
acting as a liaison between the Hillarys Yacht Club Dinghy Committee
and the WA National 125 State committee. He also volunteers for the
Sailability program, which provides sailing opportunities for people with
a disability. He enjoys introducing younger kids to the sport of sailing,
working as a sailing instructor on weekends.

28 THE UWA FOGARTY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
2016
Julia DeLorenzo
Course of Study: Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) majoring in Political
Science, International Relations and German
Following a school life characterised by a vast number of commitments,
Julia decided upon entering university that the only way to go was to join
as many clubs, charities and committees as possible.
Julia was elected first-year representative for the Bachelor of Philosophy
(Honours) Union – responsible for representing the 2016 cohort and
helping out with educational and social events. She has now moved
on to the position of VP Activities where she will coordinate the major
BPhil social events. She joined a number of charities and non-for-profits
– including Teach Learn Grow (TLG), Uni Camp for Kids, the Riding
for the Disabled Association and UN Youth Western Australia. She is
now helping to organise the 2017 UN Youth National Conference as a
member of the organising committee.
This year, Julia hopes to continue and expand her involvement with
these organisations.
Julia furthered her passion for debating by joining the UWA Debating
Union and in July she chaired as a judge for the Australasian Intervarsity
Debating Championships. She hopes to judge again at the Easters
Competition in Sydney in April this year. Julia also enjoys public speaking
and together with a partner won the UWA undergraduate mock trials

Vinith Menezes
Year of Commencement: 2005
Course of Study: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
(MBBS) and Bachelor of Medical Science
Employment: Doctor, Royal Perth Hospital
Vinith arrived at UWA and what was to become his second home,
St Thomas More College, way back in 2005. Smartphones seemed a
lifetime away and he was content with his black and green screen Nokia.
In between student advocacy groups, organising events, college life
and committees, volunteering, sporting, creating (very) amateur films,
making remotely coherent sounds on the piano and travelling the world
on vaguely medical pretenses he managed to fit in a medical and an
honours degree. Apparently that’s why he was here in the first place! But
he holds that his greatest achievement was in coming out as a gay man
and finding out the deeper truths about faith beyond the rules. He now
takes great joy in his identity as a gay catholic, which, far from excluding
him from all circles, gives him the simultaneous ability to question both
uninformed dogma and faithlessness.
Since 2011 Vinith has been a resident doctor at Royal Perth Hospital
with a journey to Kalgoorlie to man the town’s Emergency Department
in 2013. When he escapes the hospital jaws he has reignited his love
for sailing, sleep and an appreciation for the magic in the world. He now
has a smartphone but most would agree he has no idea how to use it.

school with awards in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and top of class in

from Australind into a residential college and the rigours of the first year
of a medical degree, Bradley made the most of the many opportunities
that his new life in university brought, taking on the role of First Year
Representative with the WA Medical Students’ Society. Representing
