Abstract This paper outlines a research project conducted at Leeds University School of Medicine with Assessment & Learning in Practice Settings Centre for Excel- lence in T each ing and Learning, colla bor ation betw een the Universities of Leeds, Hudderseld, Bradford, Leeds Metropolitan University and the Univer- sity of York St John. The res ear ch conduc ted is a pro of of co nce pt, examinin g the imp act of d eli ver - ing compet enc y based assessment via pers ona l dig ita l ass ist ants (PD As) amongst a group of na l year undergrad uate me dic al studen ts.This ev alu ation repo rts the student exp erien ce of mobi le techno log y for assessmentwith posit iv e effects; concluding that overall the students found completing assessments using a PDA stra ight forward and that the structure d format of the assessment res ult ed in an inc rea sed, imp ro ved lev el of feed bac k, allowing students to improv e their skillsduring the plac ement . A rela tions hip betw een using the PD A for learning and setting goals for achieve ment was clearly demonstrated. Introduction Using mobile technology for teaching and learning is a rapidly evolving area of educa- tional research (Collins, 1996; Frohberg, 2002; Preece, 2000; Vavoula, Pachler & Kukulska-Hulme, 2009).
