College of AgriCulture & Applied SCienCeS I want to be

a Veterinarian.

Leslie Dodd, a 2013 agriculture graduate with an animal science

concentration, feels a strong connection with the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources. “UT Martin students pursuing an interest in

agriculture will find unlimited possibilities for study and

exploration. From the classroom lectures to the experiential learning opportunities, I’ve

discovered how broad the field of agriculture is and learned that

there is no limit to what I can do.”

The UT Martin chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) is the top collegiate chapter in Tennessee

for 2013. The UT Martin chapter has received this award eight of the last 10 years.

UT Martin is one of fewer than 30 institutions nationally offering academic preparation in the area of

Veterinary Health Technology. This provides career opportunities in veterinary practices, animal hospitals,

animal research and zoos.

The geoscience major at UT Martin offers a meteorology concentration, the first of its kind in Tennessee.

Dr. Michael Gibson collected seashells, whale bones and shark teeth in his childhood backyard in Williamsburg, Va., and was fascinated by his discoveries. Yet even after graduating from college as a geology major, he did not intend to pursue his interest as anything more than a hobby. But when he found himself still reading his textbooks six months after graduation, he decided to give graduate school a try. Years later, Gibson is a professor of geology in a region where the landscape holds thousands of secrets.

“West Tennessee has a lot of ground area that spans 250-450 million years of time, so I have projects that are as recent as Reelfoot Lake, a few hundred years, and some of the oldest things I work on are about 450 million years old,” Gibson said. “It’s all here in West Tennessee. Nobody else has looked at it really seriously … not to the depth that we are.”

Gibson is continuing his research in paleontology and tries to give his students real-world experiences to take into their professional careers. For one particular group of students, these experiences included a trip to Kansas, funded by the Discovery Park of American in Union City, to unearth two Cetaceous period fish fossils and the remains of a mosasaur.

Graduate Programs

Agriculture and Natural Resources Management

A Master of Science in Agriculture and Natural Resources degree from UT Martin can lead you in many directions. From operations and business strategy to risk management and resources systems, you will be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. And since the entire program is online, you can grow your education from anywhere.

Family and Consumer Sciences

The Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences offers two options: family and consumer sciences and dietetics. With the first option, students may choose an emphasis in child and family studies, food science/nutrition or remain a generalist. The dietetics option incorporates a dietetic internship (DI), offering graduates of didactic programs in dietetics a post baccalaureate, clinically based practicum. Students may select thesis or non-thesis programs.

Military Science and Leadership

The ARMY Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Program at the University of Tennessee Martin is one of the most demanding and successful leadership programs in the country. ROTC provides training in leadership development, military skills and physical and mental endurance. The confidence to overcome any obstacle throughout life and the teamwork skills a student acquires while in the program can last a lifetime.
