ATributetoLarryFord:OneofCondonHall’sFinest
The Oregon geography community lost adistinguishedscholarandtrustedfriendwhenLarryFordpassedaway thispast fall.Wellknown as one of America’s leading urbangeographers, Larry conducted foundationalworkasaPh.D.student in thedepartmentthat launched both his own stellar careerandthereputationofthegraduateprograminhumangeography.
Larry encountered West Coast culturalgeography for thefirst timewhenhecameto Condon Hall in the late 1960s fromColumbus, Ohio. Attracted to the newways that geographers in Condon Hallwere conceptualizing cultural and urbangeography,Larrysoonestablishedapersonalandprofessionalrelationshipwithhisclosestmentorandadviser,EvSmith,aMinnesotaurbangeographer,aswellasBerkeley-trainedEdPrice,AlUrquhart,andothergeographyfaculty members who were hard at workbuildingtheprogramduringthoseheadyyears. In addition to these enduring friendships,Larry forged lifelong friendships at OregonwithfellowPh.D.studentcolleagueslikeDickFusch, Bob Richardson, Bill Crowley, DonHoltgrieve, and Les Rowntree—friendshipsthatservedasasourceofjoyandinspirationfor Larry throughout his career. Larry andmany of the other Ph.D. students whowent through the program during this firstof Oregon’s “golden years” helped launchliterallydozensofgeographydepartmentsinthenewCaliforniaStateUniversitysysteminthelate1960sandearly1970s(withLarryheadingforSanDiegoStateaftercompletinghisdissertation,andothersacceptingfacultypositionsatcampusesintheBayAreaandelsewhereinCalifornia).
Larry’scontributions inprint, which includefivepublishedbooksandalonglistofjournalarticlesandbookchapters,remaintoinspireandinfluenceurbangeographersnowandinthefuture.Hismanyoriginalandwell-writtencontributions stand as some of the mostimportant work to date in the subfield ofurbanculturalgeography.Beyondhismanyacademiccontributionsfocusedonobservingandanalyzingtheurbancultural landscape,LarryFordwillbegreatlymissedasaclosefriend, enjoyable confidant, and committedmemberoftheOregongeographycommunity.
