8. TEACHING (a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments My teaching at UBC involves a large first-year introductory course (Psyc 101, Introduction to Cognitive and Biology Psychology) and a specialist third-year course in my field of research, Psyc 335 Gambling and Decision-Making. I developed the curriculum proposal for Psyc 335 in 2014, and I have taught the course for five successive years, 2015-2019. The inter-disciplinary nature of this course is regarded as a strength, combining cognitive psychology and decision neuroscience, with clinical and policy-related perspectives on gambling as a public health issue. Grading includes a Written Assignment evaluating the media portrayal of gambling research. (b) Courses Taught at UBC

9. SCHOLARLY AND PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES (a) Areas of special interest and accomplishments

The common theme through my research is the neuropsychological basis of risky decision-making and its relevance to mental illness, with a particular focus on gambling behaviour as a lens for studying both risk taking and behavioural addiction. After my initial faculty appointment at the University of Cambridge, U.K. (2007 – 2014), in 2014 I became the inaugural Director of the Centre for Gambling Research at UBC, supported by a $2m award

Page 6: THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Curriculum Vitae for … · 2020-06-05 · My teaching at UBC involves a large first-year introductory course (Psyc 101, Introduction to Cognitive

Page 6/32

from the BC government and BCLC. This funding was renewed in 2018 for a second 5 year term in a $1.365m award. Since the launch of the Centre, my research has focused almost exclusively on gambling, addressing 3 main questions: i) what makes modern slot machines a particularly harmful form of gambling? ii) how do neuroscience and neuropsychological factors shape the development of gambling problems? iii) how can online gambling data be used to identify vulnerable individuals? I have around 200 peer-reviewed publications and an H-index of 88 (Google Scholar). (b) Research or equivalent grants (indicate under COMP whether grants were obtained competitively (C) or
