TSB-155

Title: Guidelines for the Assessment and Mitigation of INSTALLED CAT6 cabling to support 10GBase-T

Scope:• Characterizes performance testing of installed base of Cat-6 to support

10GBASE-T.• New Alien crosstalk requirements• Some parameters are less stringent than CAT6a (NEXT, IL)• Recommended practices for installation changes if testing is not in

compliance. • Proposed lengths:

– Between 37 & 55 meter channel, depending on alien crosstalk environment

– Over 55 meters may require mitigation

Publication Date: • December 1, 2007 TSB-155 was approved for publication• Estimated Release: Q1 2007

Page 15: The Universal Cabling System CSC Technology Showcase March 23, 2007 Joe Helm, RCDD Specification Engineer

15

TSB-155 Recommended Mitigation Techniques

• Separation of patch cords• Unbundling of horizontal cables• Use Shielded or CAT6a patch cords• Reconfigure cross-connect as inter-

connect• Replace CAT6 connectors with CAT6a

connectors• Replace CAT6 horizontal cable with

CAT6a cable

TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 (10GBASE-T)Title: Transmission Performance Specifications for 4-

pair 100 Ω Augmented Category 6 (Cat-6a) Cabling

Scope:• New cabling classification designed to support high-

speed applications, such as 10GBase-T, over 100 meter channels

• Requirements are for 4-pair 100 Ω CAT6a cabling, cables, cords and connecting hardware up to 500 MHz

• Several new alien crosstalk parameters introduced

Publication Date: • Currently at Draft 6.0, Dec., 2006• Estimated publication: Q1 2008

19

Crosstalk Review (NEXT, FEXT, etc…)

• In the past, crosstalk was concentrated within single cable jacket.

• IEEE and TIA worked together to solve this problem.– Solved with cable/jack design and electronics.– Electronics can equalize signal.

• This is PSNEXT…

Page 20: The Universal Cabling System CSC Technology Showcase March 23, 2007 Joe Helm, RCDD Specification Engineer

20

Alien Crosstalk (AXT)

• The Challenges: Alien Crosstalk (AXT)– Need to account for crosstalk from cable to cable.– No possible way to equalize 7 signals.

• The higher frequencies and HIGH power required for 10G have introduced a new problem.

• Each component design alone must solve this, no electronic solution.– AXT can occur in the cable, connector, patch panel and

patch cord. – Component ratings will be critical!!!

Page 21: The Universal Cabling System CSC Technology Showcase March 23, 2007 Joe Helm, RCDD Specification Engineer

21

Installation Issues• Cable Installation Guidelines

– Bend Radius– Conduits Fills

• Installation of the Jacks– Is it the same as Cat-6?– Follow the installation instructions

• Cable and Patch Cord Management– Management is key!
