Ourconcernwiththesemattersoccurredafteracasualevent:Whenwewereaskedtoobtainaknowninorganicsaltcompoundintwovarieties,havingboththesameparticlesize,butoneshouldhaveabulkdensitylessthan1.0g/cm3andtheotherupto1.25g/cm3.Ormore.

Wedidit,inpractice,bytrialanderror.Wethenobservedthattheonehavingthelowerbulkdensitythoughthesameparticlesizeastheotherobviouslyowedthischaracteristictotheelectrostaticchargesoftheparticlescomposingit,whiletheonehavingahigherbulkdensity,alsoevidently,becauseitoccupiedasmallervolume,ithadlesselectrostaticchargeinitsparticles.Thusinthefirstcaseithadabiggeremissionfieldand,inthesecondcase,aloweremissionfield.

Astheexistenceofpolaritycouldnotbeneglected,asitisanobviouscharacteristicofmatterandwedealwithiteverydayandweobserveiteverywhere.Soweaskedourselveswhatdoesrelatethemsoastofigureoutoneandonlydescriptionofit.

Aswethinkfromdailyexperiencethateverythingisrelatedtopolarity,toions,toelectronsandprotons,intheendtoElectricity,thenwewenttorevisitthephotoelectricphenomenon,whichwethoughtitwasalsowronglyinterpreted:Itproved,beyonddoubt,theelectricalnatureofthephoton,theincidentUVlightontheelectroscopeplatecontainedinitselftheenergyoftheafterwardsemittedelectron.

Soletusbeclear:Itisnotthata“photon”goesinandan“electron”goesout.Letusstopcallingnames:Itisenergywhichgoesinandenergywhichgoesout,ahigherfrequencygoesinandalowerfrequencygoesout,ashorterwavelengthgoesinandalongerwavelengthgoesout;ofcoursepartoftheenergyislostasthehigherfrequencywaveinteractswithalowerfrequencymedium(thetransformercore,inthecaseofanelectriccurrenttransformer):

Suchplacesofenergyinterchangearewhat,inmusic,arecalled“intervals”or“gaps”
