CAROLINA SOFTBALLAcademic Support ProgramThe Academic Support Program assists student-athletes in exploring their inter-

ests and abilities, enjoying a broad educational experience, and reaching orexceeding their academic goals.

Located primarily in the Pope Academic Support Center, the program opened itsdoors in 1986. It is equipped with study facilities, tutorial rooms, a computer lab,a 128-seat auditorium and counselors' offices. At the center, students meet withstaff to discuss course selection, major exploration, academic progress and aca-demic eligibility.

During the 2003-04 academic year, 247 Carolina student-athletes made the ACCAcademic Honor Roll, which requires a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for theyear. In the fall of 2003, 143 student-athletes made the Dean's List, and 141 did soin the spring of 2003.

“Our young people are students first and athletes second and that will always bethe case at the University,” says Athletic Director Dick Baddour. “That is a creditto our coaches, administrators and support staff, but most of all, our student-ath-letes. Their accomplishments in the classroom are very impressive.”

Robert Mercer is the director of the Academic Support Program and BrentBlanton is the academic counselor for the softball team.

The Academic Support Program serves approximately 800 student-athletes. TheAcademic Support Center is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and from7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility during after-noon hours.

• Another facet of the Academic Support Program is the Academic TeamCaptain Program. Anna Evans serves as ATC for the softball team, providing a linkbetween the Academic Support Center and the squad. The second-year programhelps recognize student-athletes for their academic achievements and providesleadership opportunites.

Sports Medicine and Athletic TrainingThe Tar Heels receive excellent care from one of the country’s best sports med-

icine staffs. Dr. Tim Taft, Director of Sports Medicine, oversees a comprehensiveprogram designed to keep student-athletes healthy and to rehabilitate any injuriesquickly and successfully. Dr. Tom Brickner is the team physician for softball.

Head athletic trainer Dan Hooker oversees a full-time staff of athletic trainersand physical therapists as well as numerousgraduate and undergraduate student trainers. The head athletic trainer for the softball teamis Scott Oliaro. Also working with the teamare graduate student athletic trainers MikeHughes and Christin Chamberlain, andu n d e rgraduate student trainer ChristopherAdams.

Community ServiceThe Tar Heels give back to the Chapel

Hill community throughout the year by par-ticipating in a variety of service projects, including Share Your Holidays, in which theteam adopts a local family and provides itsmembers with Christmas gifts. Softball play-ers also help build houses through Habitatfor Humanity and make regular visits to theChapel Hill Ronald McDonald House, among other outreach activities.

Fitness and ConditioningThe softball team trains in an 8,000-square foot fitness center under the super-

vision of Steve Gisselman, Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning forOlympic Sports.

The main fitness center, one of three facilities used by Carolina athletes, islocated in Kenan Fieldhouse below the Student-Athlete Development Center. Inaddition to its free and Olympic weights, the center features a performance labwhere specialized aerobic equipment is used for conditioning and monitoring reha-bilitation progress.

The softball team uses modern strength, flexibility and conditioning methods ina year-round cycle. This training produces athletes who are prepared to competesuccessfully and safely.

Academic ExcellenceFour Tar Heels – Anna Evans, Joslin Higgins, Jaclyn Holden and Alison Yin

– earned spots on the ACC Honor Roll for the 2003-04 school year. To benamed to the list, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0or better for the year while carrying at least 12 hours per semester and compet-ing in a varsity sport.

Six met an even higher standard this fall, earning Dean’s List honors. Thosenamed to the Dean’s List for fall were Crystal Cox, Julia Bove, Evans, Higgins,Holden and Yin. Evans, Higgins, Holdena nd Yin, along with Jessica Graziano, earned Dean’s List honors last spring. To be named to the Dean’s List, studentsmust maintain a 3.2 grade point average while carrying 15 hours or more, or a3.5 while carrying 12 to 14 hours.

Carolina Leadership AcademyBeginning in 2004, UNC student-athletes will participate in the Carolina

Leadership Academy, which will develop, challenge and support student-ath-letes, coaches and staff in their quest to become world-class leaders in academ-ics, athletics and life. The Academy will consist of three programs: • PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMLeadership training begins in the freshman year. All leadership begins with

personal leadership, therefore freshmen are taught skills to effectively leadthemselves. Working with Carolina’s traditional freshman program “AthletesComing Together (ACT)”, training consists of monthly meetings featuringkeynote speakers and small group discussion. Upperclass student-athletes serveas peer mentors and discussion leaders.• EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAMDesigned for a select group of “high potential” sophomores and juniors, this

program provides future leaders with insights, strategies and skills necessary tobecome effective leaders. The program includes monthly meetings, interactiveexercises and action learning experiences, emphasizing leading by example.• ESTABLISHED LEADERS PROGRAMDesigned for team captains and veteran student-athletes, this program pro-

vides advanced leadership training and support and teaches the critical skillsand insights necessary to be effective vocal leaders. In providing a strong peernetwork, student-athletes meet regularly to learn and reinforce leadership prin-ciples and share successes, frustrations and lessons.

A look back at the 2004 seasonNorth Carolina finished the 2004 season with a record of 44-22, reach-

ing the 40-wins mark for the seventh time in school history. The TarHeels played in the NCAA Regionals for the third time in the last fouryears, making their 2004 appearance via an at-large bid and competingin Waco, Texas.

On the way to the postseason, Carolina put together an impressivestretch, winning 21 of 23 games from March 13 to April 15 and 10 in arow between March 13 and 20.

UNC finished second in the ACC regular season with a 6-4 record andplaced third in the ACC Tournament. Some highlights of the season werea sweep of ACC rival Virginia in Charlottesville, a 3-2 win over 24th-ranked Georgia Tech and a sweep of East Carolina in which senior short-stop Emily Price hit three home runs in three consecutive at-bats in thedoubleheader.

In NCAA play, the Tar Heels opened against host Baylor and took thethird-seeded Bears to the 16th inning before falling 1-0. After a 4-0 winover Texas-San Antonio, the Tar Heels found themselves in anotherscoreless, extra-inning game, which Seton Hall eventually won 1-0 in 12innings.

Price breaks single-season homers markWith 16 home runs in her senior year, Emily Price set a school single-

season school record. The old mark was held by Natalie Anter, who hit15 in 2002.

Price tied Anter’s record with a game-winning blast in a 1-0 win overCampbell on May 8. She broke the record in the team’s next game, a 7-2 win over Maryland in the first round of the Atlantic Coast ConferenceTournament.

Cox provides impressive finalePitcher Crystal Cox wrapped up an impressive sophomore season by

pitching two of her best games at the NCAA Regionals in Waco, Texas.Against host Baylor, the third seed, Cox pitched 15 shutout inningsbefore finally giving up a run in the 16th for a 1-0 loss.

Cox faced third-seeded Baylor on May 20 and shut the Bears out for 15innings until finally allowing a run to cross the plate in the 16th, as UNCfell 1-0. She followed that standout performance with another one in hernext start against Seton Hall in the Tar Heels’ third NCAA game. Again, she took a shutout into extra innings before giving up a run, this time inthe 12th. For her efforts, Cox was named to the All-Region team alongwith Dionne Streete.

Seniors leave winning legacyAt the end of the season, North Carolina said goodbye to five seniors:

Jessica Graziano, Emily Price, Jessica Robinson, Natashalyn Snipes andDionne Streete. The senior class was part of all three NCAA tournamenttrips in school history (2001, 2003 and 2004) and helped the team to 156wins, the second highest total in a four-year span in school history.
