The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Social Justice Sunday

Year B — 29th August 2021

The community of the Cathedral of St. Stephen acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which our parish stands.

Dear friends,

Cry of the Earth,

Cry of the Poor

The Bishops’ Social Justice Statement 2021-22: Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor, affirms that “we human beings need a change of heart, mind, and behaviour”. It draws from Scripture, from the theological tradition, from Catholic Social Teaching, and from the wisdom of the world, including the insights of the First Nations.

The Social Justice Statement 2021-22 provides theological foundations to ground and inspire efforts to care for creation while responding to the needs of the disadvantaged and excluded. The Statement reflects on creation in and through the Trinity; the sacramentality of all created things; the wonder and beauty available to the contemplative eye; and the need for conversion and change of life.

In the Statement, the Bishops invite the whole Catholic community to join them in taking up Pope Francis’ invitation to a seven-year journey towards total ecological sustainability, guided by seven Laudato Si’ Goals.

These goals are: response to the cry of the earth; response to the cry of the p o o r ; e co l o g i ca l e co n o m i c s ; sustainable lifestyles; ecological spirituality; ecological education; and co m m u ni ty e ng ag e me nt a n d participatory action.

The signs of the times are clear - we know that we human beings need a change of heart, mind, and behaviour. Pope Francis continues to call us to an ecological conversion and an economic conversion, and we want to respond.

The Statement especially encourages Catholic families, communities and organisations to: listen to the First Nations; reflect on the theological foundations offered in Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor; and plan their next steps towards the Laudato Si’ Goals.

PATRICK’S St. Patrick’s, Fortitude Valley, is one of the oldest and most historically significant churches in the Archdiocese. At present, it is in desperate need of restoration which will come at a substantial cost. In order to fund the restoration and renewal of St. Patrick’s church, the local St. Pat’s community and the Cathedral parish with the support of the Archdiocese have embarked on a program for the development of the St. Patrick’s precinct commencing with the building of an office complex on the site of the current car park. In recent weeks, the Brisbane City Council has given approval to our development application and we are now in the early stages of progressing the plan which will provide the much-needed funds to restore and renew St. Patrick’s church. We look forward to the progression of this development and we will keep the community updated as this project unfolds. INFANT BAPTISM AT THE CATHEDRAL The next Baptismal Preparation meeting will be held on Saturday

4 September @ 9.30am in the Hanly Room. As numbers for the Preparation meeting are limited, it is important that you book to attend. Please contact the Cathedral office on 3324 3030, or email [email protected] for information.

SEASON OF CREATION From 1st September to 4 October, Christians around the world celebrate the Season of Creation. The theme for 2021 is “A home for all? Renewing the

oikos of God”, Oikos is the Greek word for home or household. All are welcome to an ecumenical service to celebrate the Season of Creation at the Cathedral of St Stephen on Wednesday

1 September @ 7:00pm. The car park will be available. ANNUAL CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN

A powerful sign of our faith in action. As Catholics, we are called to care for our neighbours. Your gift to support the Annual Catholic Campaign is a joyous expression of your love and care for those in need. https://catholicfoundation.org.au/catholic-campaign/ A brochure, which includes a gifting envelope, is available at the door of the Cathedral. The brochure outlines the impact of your giving. Envelopes can be returned via the collection plate or posted. Four major areas of need for the Church today

Priests Foundation caring for elderly and unwell priests in their retirement,

Centacare supporting Catholic social services,

Holy Spirit Seminary educating seminarians for our future parishes, and

Mary MacKillop Catholic School Access Fund providing education bursaries to children whose dream of Catholic education is beyond their family’s reach.

If you prefer to contribute a non tax-deductible donation your gift will go toward the Annual Grants Program contributing to grants for grassroots ministry throughout the Archdiocese. For processing purposes, your gifts must be made to this fund separately. SUPPORT OF THE CATHEDRAL PARISH Your financial support of the Cathedral Parish is always appreciated. Domine, memorabor iustitiae tuae solius: Deus, docuisti me a iuventute mea, et usque in senectam et senium, Deus, ne derelinquas me.

O Lord, I will praise your justice alone. God, you have taught me from my youth, and even to old age, O God, abandon me not!

Missa Aeterna Christi Munera Palestrina (1525-1594)

At the conclusion of the Introit, a bell is sounded. The assembly

responds as the Choir and Ministers process towards the altar

with the following translation of the Introit text. The first verse

(which is the Antiphon) is repeated after the final verse.

ENTRANCE SONG

Antiphon:

Have mercy on me, O my Lord, I cry all day to you. For you, O Lord, are good and just, Forgiving, pouring steadfast love On all who call on you.

Incline your ear to me, O Lord, Despondent and in need. Sustain me for I trust in you, And save your faithful servant, who Depends on you indeed.

Give glory to our loving God, The Father, and the Son, The Holy Spirit equally, The God who rules eternally, For ever Three-in-One.

O salutaris Hostia, Quae caeli pandis ostium: Bella premunt hostilia, Da robur, fer auxilium. Uni trinoque Domino Sit sempiterna gloria, Qui vitam sine termino Nobis donet in patria. Amen.

O saving Victim, Who opening the door of heaven, Hostile armies press, Give strength; bear aid. To the One and Triune Lord, May there be everlasting glory; who life without end gives us in the homeland. Amen.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION James 1:18

Refrain Where there is charity and love, there the love of God abides.

1. The love of Christ has gathered us as one, Rejoice in him with joy which he imparts; Let us revere and love the living God And love each other with unfeigning hearts. Refrain

2. And so when we are gathered here as one, Let quarrels die and envious rancour cease;| Be our resolve all bitterness to shun And in our midst be Christ, his love and peace. Refrain

3. Oh, lead us, Master, by your saving grace, To where the blessed glory in your sight;| There let us see and love you face to face, Gathered once more in everlasting light. Refrain

Praise the Lord! you heavn’s, adore him (CWBII 583)

PLEASE TAKE THIS COPY OF THE BULLETIN

WITH YOU AT THE CONCLUSION OF MASS TODAY.

Praise the Lord! you heavn’s, adore him; Praise him, angels, in the height; Sun and moon, rejoice before him; Praise him, all you stars and light. Praise the Lord! for he has spoken; Worlds his mighty voice obeyed; Laws which never shall be broken For their guidance he has made.

Praise the Lord! for he is glorious; Never shall his promise fail; God has made his saints victorious; Sin and death shall not prevail. Praise the God of our salvation! Hosts on high, his power proclaim; Heav’n, and earth, and all creation Praise and glorify his name.

Worship, honour, glory, blessing, Lord, we offer as our gift. Young and old, your praise expressing, Our glad songs to you we lift. All the saints in heav’n adore you, We would join their glad acclaim; As your angels serve before you, So on earth we praise your name.

Refrain

Blessed Jesus, at your word we are gathered all to hear you; let our hearts and minds be stirred now to seek and love and fear you; by your gospel pure and holy teach us, Lord, to love you solely.

All our knowledge, sense and sight lie in deepest darkness shrouded, till your spirit breaks our night with your beams of truth unclouded; you alone to God can win us, you must work all good within us.

Glorious Lord, yourself impart, light of light from God proceeding; open lips and ears and heart, help us by your Spirit’s leading; hear the cry your Church now raises; Lord, accept our prayers and praises.

The Father gave us birth by his message of truth,

that we might be as the first fruits of his creation.

OFFERTORY MOTET 12pm Mass

Domine in auxilium meum respice. Confundantur et revereantur qui quaerunt animam meam ut auferant eam.
