The Trumpet One of the most

important tenents of the

Christian faith is the centrality

of the nuclear family in

human society. By nuclear we mean a household with dad,

mom and children. This follows the Biblical narrative of the

family – and it was God who designed, created and stamped

his blessing on it.

In the latest issue of AARP magazine is an update on

the state of the “New American Family.” For example, in

1970 40% or all households consisted of a married couple

and their children. Now in 2013 that number has dropped to

just 19% - one in five! In 1960 72% of adults are married.

Now it is 51%. In 1960 only 5% of births were to unmarried

women. In 2012 the number had jumped to an astounding

41%. And the number of multigenerational households rose

from 12% in 1980 to 17% in 2009. This translates into about

five million households with three or more generations. And

the US Supreme Court ruled that interracial marriages were

legal and now there are 15% of all new marriages are mixed

race. The article says little about “same sex” marriages (a

term and arrangement not sanctioned in the Bible) but does

report that 21% of such households include children.

It seems the great shifts in what constitutes a marriage-

family between then and now is the abandoning by society of

the Biblical model of marriage and home. Today society

interprets the new models according to rapidly changing

standards based on highly subjective beliefs. “It

accommodates whomever we view to be part of our

families.” So says Susan L. Brown, co-director of the

National Center for Family & Marriage Research.

I still believe in the marriage-family model shaped by

our wise heavenly Father!

God bless you all – I love you.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY WITH TOLLIE MEGGS October 4

Please remember to pray for our students as they begin school this

month.

“The Sacred and the Silly” The room was dead still except for the rustle of people headed toward the altar and the background music softly playing through the sound system. You could strongly feel the presence of the Holy Spirit; He was nearly tangible. Every

person was preparing themselves to take the Lord’s Supper in a consecration service before 300 students, leaders in their student ministries, stormed upon us in a couple of hours. The elements were beautifully placed in front of the stage, several large, circular pieces of unleavened bread, a goblet style cup filled with grape juice, and expertly arranged décor surrounding them. Each person reverently made his way to the front, broke a piece of bread, dipped it into the cup, ate, and then returned to his seat. A truly beautiful and moving service. As I approached the stage and the elements, something bright yellow caught my eye just to the right of the beautiful arrangement at the center of the stage. My attention turned from the centerpiece and focused on….a single serving cereal box! What in the world is a cereal box doing in the middle of our consecration service?! Leave it to a bunch of youth pastors to mess up this most holy and reverent moment! I glared at the box as if staring at it might scare it and make it go away. Then from outside my flare of anger, came the still small voice in my head that some people call common sense but we Christians know to be God. He said, “Isn’t that what youth ministry really is—the sacred right alongside the silly?” Of course He was right—He’s God, He is always right. Sometimes I let myself get too uptight about things that do not really matter, like cereal boxes. As long as we use the silly to teach and promote the sacred and not allow the sacred to be overcome by the silly, are we not still accomplishing our goal of glorifying the Father and making disciples? Today’s students, and most of today’s people, hold nothing as sacred. The Sabbath is no longer sacred. The church is no longer sacred. Marriage is no longer sacred. If we can teach what is sacred using what is silly we are overcoming the world! I partook of the Supper and returned to my seat with a renewed purpose. A few hours later I was seated in a room with 12 junior and seniors from all over Alabama and parts of Mississippi, a worship leader from Prattville, and three other adults from Calvary here in Tuscaloosa. We had gathered at a leadership camp with no swimming pool, basketball goal, or beach. We had gathered to teach and be taught topics like Doctrine of the Church, Evangelism, Doctrine of the Bible, Doctrine of Sin and Redemption, Leadership, and Hermeneutics. Yet we were surround by alien balloons, blue tablecloths covering the walls, and water guns taped to the cabinet, all following the “Men in Blue” theme. The sacred in the midst of the silly.
