BUND Beyond Bond

From Best Practice to Best Evidence July 2017

Assistant Professor Ekta Agarwal has published an editorial in the recent edition of Nutrition and Dietetics Journal.

The editorial highlights despite the evidence that unless malnutrition is identified it goes undiagnosed and therefore untreated, we continue to see gaps in the translation of the evidence for malnutrition screening in practice. The paper gives examples of Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines for falls and pressure injury prevention that have been successfully translated into practice and lessons to learn from these for translating guidelines for malnutrition management into practice.

Alumni Watch Introducing Molly Warner – BUND 02

Molly Warner is part of our recently graduated BUND02 cohort.

Like many of our BUND02 graduates, Molly secured employment before graduation day! She has been successful in taking up two dietetic positions. The first at My Nutrition clinic and the second within the nutrition research team at Bond University.

At My Nutrition, Molly is delivering dietetic services in both the outpatient and aged care settings along with applying her amazing writing and digital media marketing skills.

For her research position, she is involved with qualitative and quantitative research studies on telehealth services for patients with chronic kidney disease. You can connect with Molly via LinkedIn here.

BUND Student News

BUNDs in the Solomon Islands

Last month, four students from our BUND03 cohort visited the Solomon Islands for their community and public health nutrition internship.

Sophie Mahoney, Alex Lindeberg, Matt Hart and Katie Howard completed projects across a range of settings in KiraKira, an island in the Makira-Ulawa province.

Projects were centred on building the capacity of local health personnel in both schools, the health promotion unit, remote communities and of course the hospital.

Apart from the public health nutrition experience and outcomes, the life-changing experience of visiting a developing nation and building skills in resilience and cultural competency has been invaluable.

The work in the Solomons is a faculty-wide initiative with medicine, physiotherapy and environment and planning students all visiting the region regularly.

Welcome BUND 04s

Our newest recruits the BUND 04s, have been settling in well to life at BOND. They have spent their first semester building foundational dietetic skills in food science, nutrition assessment, communication and counselling and understanding Australian and global nutrition issues and priorities.

Their arrival was welcomed by catch ups with our BUND 03 students and a fabulous cohort retreat to Byron Bay with both team building fun and learning all things food sustainability.

BUND Team Updates

Welcome Baby Hugh

Our much loved Assistant Professor Kristen Mackenzie-Shalders, has just announced the arrival of this bundle of cuteness, Houston “Hugh”.

Mum is well and of course loved up.

We are looking forward to cuddles when he visits the office.
