“It felt great winning the Ben Baker award. It made me feel one step closer to reaching my goals. I wasn’t expecting it. I thought maybe another person deserved it more than me. But it made my goals feel appreciated.”

Jessie Freudenthaler

“I didn’t think I would get any. There are three for school and one for books. They will help me because I have to pay out-of-state tuition.”

“I have won six or seven (scholarships). It’s very rewarding to be recognized for my efforts. I will use three of (the scholarships). They will cover my tuition for my undergraduate and some of my housing, books, etc.”

SCHOLARSHIPSAWARDED

Yes, money truly matters, especially when college is just a few months away. Remember at the beginning of the year when you stressed out about scholarship applications? For 159 seniors, all the work has paid off. They were awarded scholarships at the annual Senior Awards Program May 15. A record of

“I have won the IU Excellence, Glenn and Scolnik Scholarship, Wells Scholarship and S. Edgar and Delora L. Lauther Memorial Scholarship. I feel great to be so lucky. I will receive about $2,000 a year after everything, considering I stay in a dorm which may save me considerably more.”

PADILLA

Mariel Padilla made her way to the front of the stage from her seat among the

159 seniors who were recognized at the Senior Awards Night. Every year, the school holds an awards night to honor seniors who receive scholarships of all kinds. At the end of the ceremony, each senior receives a Scholarship Award which lists all scholarships received by the student during the school year.

Padilla was the senior who stood in front of the crowd for the longest period of time. She was waiting for Counseling Director Patrick Pemberton to finish listing her 18 scholarships. These scholarships are from various colleges, including the Ball State University Presidential Award and the DePauw University Academic Scholarship. The 18 scholarships add up to approximately $200,000 total. Even though Padilla will not be using all of the 18 scholarships, the Miami University Merit Scholarship will pay for most of her tuition and room and board expenses.

“I feel really grateful for these scholarships because it makes college less of a burden on my parents and myself, but it also really opens up more options for me.”

Padilla will also use her Youth Leadership Award when she attends Miami Univerisity, where she will continue to apply for music scholarships.

The Navy“[Doctors] always had money and nice cars, but then it didn’t look like it could happen because it was too much work. My grandpa was in the army and my uncle was in the Navy; and he used to talk how fun it was. I also want to travel around the word.”

Theatre“When I was in fifth grade, we wrote an essay on what we wanted to do when we grew up. I really wanted to be a vet, but then I realized I didn’t want to do anything doctor-related, or anything related to shots, blood or needles. So, I decided that I wanted to do theatre and be an actress. I have been in theatre all four years (here), in middle school, and I also do theatre in the summer.”

Nursing“[Law] just grabbed my attention, because [lawyers] would be suited up and I wanted to dress up. In seventh grade I found out it was hard, [so I decided to take nursing classes.] I have taken C4 classes at East, so I have 10 credits for college.”

It’s pretty common to hear someone say that his or her life has been influenced by a family member. But senior Carson Ward takes it to a whole new level. His family-

specifically, his grandparents- have affected his life in major ways.

Ward’s life changed one Sunday afternoon in Louisville.“My grandfather was diagnosed with cancer and it

had progressed to the brain and he had gone through radiation, chemo, brain surgery, everything. He was in his final weeks and one of the doctors actually came to the house and we called him and he said, ‘Okay, I understand. I’ll be there right after church.’ I was very impressed that he was willing to take time out of what would normally be an off day and he came to my grandmother’s house, which is also impressive because it’s not his office, he’s going somewhere out of his comfort zone. He was just absolutely delightful. He explained things very clearly. He showed compassion towards my grandmother and my grandfather, and my grandfather was almost incoherent so his patience with my grandfather was very impressive. He was very knowledgeable. You could tell he loved what he did.”

That was the day Ward knew he wanted to go into the medical field. Yet that wasn’t the only connection and influence Ward’s late grandfather had.

“That was the grandfather- the one who was dying- he really got me into flying.”

Carson’s mother, Holly Ward, shared the volunteer activities that Andy Biesel, Carson’s late grandfather, participated in as a pilot.

“He participated in the Young Eagles program, which is basically a program to expose kids to aviation. The first Saturday of every month, pilots volunteer their time and

For this last issue, we highlighted three spectacular seniors. Read on to learn about their stories

and the unique paths their lives will take next

year

SPOTLIGHT

their aircrafts to take kids on a 30 minute flight. Dad did that.”

Ward received his pilot’s license May 15 after years of training and practice.

“At 10 years old he sent me up with an instructor and I fell in love with it and so from then on I pursued it. 10 is very young. You can solo at 16 and then at 17 you can actually get your license. At any point, as long as you can reach the rotor pedals, you can go up with a Certified Flying Instructor.”

Although his first time flying was at 10 years of age, Ward was exposed to airplanes earlier in life by his grandfather, who he was very close with.

“I never got to fly with him, which is weird. It was just due to health. When I was old enough to be interested, he wasn’t allowed to fly at that point. When I was very young and we lived in California, he used to take my little brother and I to airshows all the time. So we would fly to Reno and we would go to the Reno air show every year and so that really instilled the love of airplanes in me.”

The journey to getting his pilot license was a long one for Ward, and one full of setbacks.

While his grandfather was battling cancer, Ward went a full year without flying.

“We were spending much more time in Louisville than we normally did. We would go down there weekdays after school and not just on weekends, so I didn’t have much time [to fly]. He had also been funding the flying so I stopped letting my grandparents pay for it. So I got a job and started paying for it on my own.”

Ward also had to adjust to a new airport to fly out of once his family moved from Louisville to Columbus.

“I started in Lousiville at Bowman Airfield and then I moved up to Columbus and flew out of Rhoades Aviation, and that’s where I have the majority of my hours.”

The next setback came when Ward had to take a routine medical exam during the process.

“It took longer because I had a bad eye so I had to prove that my eye was not going to hold me back. I went through all the

normal stuff, I was practicing with an instructor, and then you have to get a medical, to prove that you’re medically fit to fly and I failed the medical due to my left eye. I just can’t read with it and that’s how it’s tested, and due to that I had to fill out tons of paperwork and ship it out to the FAA. I had to go up to Indianapolis to prove that I could see things perfectly fine, and that I can fly and land an airplane.”

Ward’s parents were on board with the idea of Ward getting his pilot license.

“I was excited for him because I love flying as much as my dad and I took flying lessons in college,” Mrs. Ward said.

The oncologist that treated Ward’s grandfather wasn’t the only medical professional who influenced Ward.

“I don’t want to be an oncologist, but possibly a cardiologist. When my other grandfather had a heart attack I was very impressed with the doctors, and the subject is interesting.”

CARSON WARD

Several aspects of this senior’s life have been impacted by family, from his hobby of flying an airplane to his chosen career path. Read on to learn more about this newly licensed pilot

CHASEmaynard

A lthough 79 percent of our seniors will be attending college in the

fall, Chase Maynard is one of the 4.7 percent who will be serving in the military first.

“I leave Sept. 10 for Great Lakes, IL for basic training. After basic I’m headed to Pensacola FL for 120 days for my job training. I’ll work under someone for 1-2 years and then go out to sea or to a land base.”

Maynard had considered the military before, but not the navy until recruiters came to North.

“The navy recruiters came to my 5th period Econ class. They were talking about the navy and how awesome it was and I thought, “I don’t know how I’m going to pay for college, and I want to travel, so this would be cool!” They have this survey that you fill out and they ask if you’re interested and I said yes. They called the next day and we set up a meeting. I went back the next week with my parents.”

Maynard’s mother, Natalie Whittington was surprised when he first expressed an interest.

“I was shocked because it kind of came out of left field. He hasn’t talked about going into the armed forces since he was 12 or 13, He thought about it and he prayed about it and he felt that this is what he needs to do right now.” Whittington said.

Once he found out what job he would have, Maynard was pleased with the results.

“I took a placement test to

This senior will soon be in Illinois. He’s joining the Navy to become an air traffic controller! Read on to read about his eventual goal- teaching high school English

[find jobs]. They took me into an office and put two pieces of paper in front of me. One was air traffic control and the other was a hospital corpsman. They said, ‘These are the two jobs available for you’ and I chose air traffic control.”

Maynard looks forward to the challenges that his job will present.

“I’m the guy that sits in the tower and and tells them when they can take off, what flight patterns to take and when they can land. I’ll be talking to multiple planes at once so I’ll be keeping them from crashing.”

Maynard stressed that though his job won’t require him to be on the front lines, lives are still at risk, if not his own directly.

“It’s not a high-risk job as far as my own life, but you live in very stressful conditions. One lapse in concentration amounts to “x” number of lives lost. I’ll be working six hour days but civilian air traffic controllers up in Indy work four hour days because it’s such a high-stress job.”

Maynard’s parents are proud of him, though there is plenty of worry as well.

“I’m getting nervous because I’m his mom, and I don’t want him to get into any danger, but I’m proud of him.” Whittington said.

The process of adjusting to the idea hasn’t been easy for either parent.

“The day I came home from MEPS, the medical testing

facility, my dad cried because they asked me ‘Who do you want to give your body to if you die?’ and I wanted to give it to both of them but you have to pick one and I picked my dad.”

After his release from the Navy, Maynard wants to become a high school English teacher.

“I started thinking about being a teacher at the beginning of my junior year, when I signed up for Teacher Education. I want to be a high school English teacher like Mr. Weinheimer. They have a program called “Troops to Teachers” and you can earn your college degree while you’re serving. By the time I get out, I’ll have my degree and license.”

Although going into the military is always a risk, and a difficult proposition, Maynard believes it will be worth it.

“[The military] looks good on your applications and they know you have leadership skills. Only 26 percent of Americans qualify to apply for the military. That’s just to apply; there’s no guarantee of getting in. In Indiana there are like 10-15% of people that fail boot camp because they give up or they can’t do one of the tasks.”

Before he ships out, Maynard plans on relaxing as much as possible.

“(This summer) I’m going to work and hang out with my friends and family. Two weeks before I ship out, my dad and I are going on vacation, just the two of us, and we’re going down to Pensacola to check it out.”

GRACEfischvogt

Emily agrees, expressing her pride at her sister’s accomplishment.

“I am happy that she got in because it is a little bit hard to get in because it is a Polynesian school. They mainly only accept people from Hawaii.”

Although her parents are very proud, they are also adjusting to the thought of Grace going so far away.

“I don’t think it’s set in that I’m going that far away for [my parents]. My dad opened [the acceptance letter] before I did. He was thrilled. My mom is still giddy about it so I don’t think it’s really set in yet, that I’m going to the other side of the US on an island far away.”

Speaking of islands; it’s kind of hard to get a U-Haul over the Pacific. So how’s move-in day going to work?

“I don’t have anything for college except for clothes. So I think we’re going to go up there and my dad’s gonna go with me and we’re going to buy stuff I need for the dorms.”

Although her travel experience has been limited, Grace looks forward to college life.

I’m a little bit nervous because I have to ride a plane and I’ve never done that before, [but] I think it’s going to be fun.”

A fter June 1, the seniors of Columbus North High School will go their separate

ways. Some, it seems, will have a longer journey than others. Senior Grace Fischvogt is headed for Brigham Young University’s Hawaii campus. Laie, HI is 5,057 miles from Columbus.

A majority of our seniors looked at schools relatively close to home. So where did the idea of Hawaii come from?

“My sister really wanted to go to BYU Hawaii for college and she talked about it a lot and she thought it was really cool and so when I was applying to BYU Provo and BYU Idaho I figured I might as well apply there because it had everything I wanted but it was like a long shot because it’s really hard to get into,” Fischvogt said.

Fischvogt’s sister, Emily, is a sophomore here. Her interest in BYU Hawaii was sparked in the seventh grade.

“I was doing a project for school where I researched a college I might want to go to and I looked it up and thought it was really cool.”

So how does one react when one’s dream school now contains a family member?

“I was a little upset mainly because she only applied because it was my number one choice,” Emily said.

The sophomore doesn’t think she’ll join her sister in Hawaii next year.

“Im probably going to see if there is somewhere else now”

The university has a 29 percent acceptance rate. What made admission more difficult was that few students are usually accepted from the USA.

“They don’t really accept people from the states. They accept a lot of people from Europe and Asia and stuff because they want it to be a really diverse campus. I only know of one other person from Indiana that got in, and no one got in last year.” 19THE TRIANGLE

Mr. Britton is a peek into a world outside of high school where you can be anything you want. My favorite memory would have to be finding him hula-hooping in the hallways and the bus lot.” Randi Zust 3 “Mr. Hackman has directly influenced my major because he has taught me all about accounting. Mr. Hackman is leaving and if you never had him as a teacher, then you have not had the true CNHS business experience. Mr. Hackman teaches more than the curriculum - he teaches about adulthood and life as well.” Ryan Mulrooney 4 “Mr. Weinheimer has made me really appreciate English and shown how the subject is really an art. Mr. Weinheimer has quite the sense of humor and his sarcasm is unrivaled.” Jacob Phillips
