Parkinson’s Seminar 2015 - Success for PD 101 An audience of 125 people with Parkinson’s disease, caregivers, families, and health care personnel were introduced to PD 101, a program created by the National Parkinson Foundation and aptly presented by Dr. Kapil Sethi at the 2015 Parkinson’s Seminar. The program covered basic information about the disease, it's progression, varying symptoms, treatment and especially medications and efforts of research. The guest presenter, Dr. David Standaert, neurologist and researcher from the medical center at University of Alabama in Birmingham elaborated on the research theme. Dr. Standaert gave an update on the status of Parkinson’s research, as well as some of the history and medical discoveries related to Parkinson’s for the past 200 years. The latest research focuses on gene therapy and the effects of certain protein molecules in the brain. He referred to recent studies using 10,000 cases in 2011. growing to 100,000 in 2014 to find indicators for both genetic and environmental causes for Parkinson’s disease - often both together. It also confirmed that there will be a dramatic rise in the number of PD cases in the next few years as more "baby boomers" enter the 65-85 year old categories. For the first time, the annual seminar was held at the Kroc center. The service and catered breakfast buffet were exceptional! Thanks to sponsors TEVA, Lundbeck, and ABVIE pharmaceuticals, the GRU Movement Disorder Clinic and the CSRA Chapter, NPF.
