You are the inspiration of this year’s reportbecause you represent the heart of our community. And if ever there was a place that illustrated theAfrican saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”,it is Bloorview Kids Rehab.

Nothing prepares parents for the news that theirchild has been struck by a car or has developed acatastrophic illness, and will always live with somedegree of disability. Some parents learn that theirchild has been born with a disability and will havelife long healthcare and rehab needs. Bloorview isa lifeline to families in these circumstances, a placewhere their child receives world-class care from amulti-disciplinary team, including doctors, nurses, therapists, social workers, teachers, artists and childlife specialists. The high standard of care Bloorviewoffers to each child is enabled by your financialsupport. Thank you!

This year, our Foundation made it a priority todevelop broader community support, asking fordonations everywhere; from our village barber shop,to the neighbourhood hockey teams, to local schools, and from some of Toronto’s best chefs. We had ahunch that our “village” would respond to the needsof Bloorview’s children, and we were right! TheFoundation increased its donor base by 53%, andcelebrated by launching our first-ever gala dinnerevent, right in our own home!

You, our neighbours and community partners, enable Bloorview to assist thousands of childrenwith disabilities and their families each year. Yoursupport allows us to push beyond the boundariesof traditional healthcare to offer the innovativeprograms, services and technologies that changethe lives of children and families. From life skills, recreation and creative arts programs, to familyeducation and resources, to the most sophisticatedadaptive technologies, your dollars help to ensurethat children with disabilities have the sameopportunities and experiences as any other child.

With your help, we are creating a world ofpossibilities for each child with a disability. Wecouldn’t do it without you. Thank you for sogenerously supporting Bloorview Kids Rehab.

It takesa community

On Thursday, November 8th, 2007 Bloorview

honoured Ron Joyce for his $300,000 gift to

Bloorview’s recent capital campaign. Inspired by

Ron’s generosity, many of his closest friends travelled

from across Canada to join Ron on a tour of the

new facility and enjoyed a sumptuous dinner by

Chef Bruce Woods and sponsored by Centro.

Ron is an exceptional and generous philanthropist

who has made a direct impact on the lives of

thousands of children with disabilities from across

Ontario and Canada.

Community leaders who came out to honour and

celebrate Ron’s philanthropy included: Deborah

Alexander, Belinda Stronach, John and Judy Bragg,Ron Joyce with Kelly, Bloorview Ambassador.

We’ve learned that inspiration makesevery single one of us a better student.

Moved by the children he met during his visit,

Ron announced during dinner an additional

$300,000 to Bloorview to sustain funding for

programs, services and research to enable

children to be active participants in life.

Bloorview is extremely proud and grateful

to be counted among the many beneficiaries

Crystal is an incredibly social 19-year old, who

has been coming to Bloorview for over 10 years.

She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy during

her late infancy. With the support of her

comprehensive healthcare team, Crystal has

drawn on many Bloorview programs and services

to maximize her potential.

Most recently, Crystal has benefited from Bloorview’s

Lifeskills and Wellness programs to assist her

in the transition from adolescence to adulthood

including: LIFEspan, The Independence Program and

the recently launched Leaders in Training Program.

“I am from a culture where having adisability is often considered shameful.I did not realize the potential I possesswithin, until the day my familyimmigrated to Canada and I startedreceiving services from BloorviewKids Rehab.” – Crystal

We’ve learned that it can take yearsto build up a nest egg of trust.

This is where the Banker fits in! Capital One is

committed to enabling people with disabilities to

find their rightful place in the workforce. That’s

why when they heard about Bloorview’s plan to

launch a “Leaders in Training Program”, Capital One

jumped at the chance to sponsor the initiative.

The first of its kind in Ontario, The Leaders in

Training Program provides an early work experience

for youth with disabilities. The program focuses on

the development of work-related life skills through

a combination of on-the-job work experience via job

placement and educational sessions.

“Since my disability impacts all aspects of my life,

I was under the impression that I would never be

‘successful’ or accomplish anything in life. That was

until I started working with the dedicated staff at

Bloorview, who not only encouraged and assisted me

to work on my difficulties, but also convinced me

that I am fine just as I am and that there is nothing

to be ashamed of. I am who I am today because the

staff at Bloorview believed in me and saw something

in me that no one else did,” stated Crystal.

With the generous support of corporate partners,

like Capital One, Bloorview has pioneered some of

the country’s most innovative Lifeskills programs,

helping youth move from high school to post-

secondary education to employment, independent

living and community participation.

Many people know James Duncanas a successful financial broker. Whatthey don’t know is that he is cultivatingrelationships and growing The BayStreet Children’s Foundation to helpkids with special needs.

James and his wife, Cheryl, are parents of five

beautiful daughters: quadruplets Alexandra, Lindsay,

Stephanie and Riley, and Jennifer. Lindsay has

benefited from the programs and services, at

Bloorview, so James and Cheryl know first hand,

the positive impact a comprehensive facility like

Bloorview has on the lives of children and families.

Founded by James, The Bay Street Children’s

Foundation has raised more than $1 million for

Bloorview. For over 12 years, James has been the

driving force behind The Bay Street Pro Celebrity

Softball Challenge. The two-day event, held at

the Riverdale Flats, brings together celebrities,

professional athletes, and brokers from Bay Street

and Wall Street, to raise much-needed funds to

ensure children with disabilities are equipped to

meet life’s challenges.The Duncan Family.

We’ve learned that the healthiest growth

comes from nurturing the right seeds.

The annual event has already funded two

therapeutic gymnasiums in Bloorview’s new facility.

The gymnasiums are used for various programs

including physiotherapy and recreational activities

for inpatients and day patients, to maintain or

improve health and their quality of life.

In 2007, The Bay Street Children’s Foundation

committed to a new $500,000 project to fund a

training apartment at Bloorview where teens can

practice activities for daily living.

Generous support from donors, like The Bay Street

Children’s Foundation, helps inspire children with

disabilities to be active participants in their

communities by providing kids with the right tools

to harvest their potential.
