FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Friends,

I used to watch the TV show called “House.” It centered around a brilliant but very

messed up doctor named Greg House. He had a mantra he lived by: “Everybody lies.”

Surprisingly, this mantra helped him be a better doctor.

As I think about our commandment for this month, I wondered, is he right? Does

everybody lie? How hard is it to get the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. So,

how many of us have every told a lie in our lives? I am going to assume that every single

one of us is raising our hands right now. It is hard to tell the truth all the time, for various

reasons.

Why is this commandment so hard for us to keep? Because every day we can be

confronted with situations where telling a little white lie will make life easier. Sometimes

we lie to protect ourselves (I didn’t do it.), sometimes we lie to protect others (no, that outfit

doesn’t make you look fat), sometimes we lie to stay out of a situation that we don’t want to

be in. (No, I didn’t see anything), sometimes we lie to ourselves even (I didn’t do anything

wrong.)

If this is such a hard commandment to keep, I wonder why God gave it to us? This

commandment really reminds us of our need for God. It shows us that by our own strength

and will, we cannot be perfect, and that reminds us all how much we need God and his great

gift of forgiveness.

Because there are times when telling the truth is cruel and unnecessary, at least, the

truth according to us. I’ll bet we can all think of a time when someone shared their truth

with us and it hurt us deeply. Following this commandment really starts with our intent.

Are we focused on ourselves? Or are we focused on the people around us? To follow the

intent of this commandment means that we put others before ourselves. It means that we

speak the truth in love.

Maybe a good way is to ask ourselves 3 questions before we share a truth with

someone else: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? If we can’t say yes to all of those

questions then maybe we should keep our mouths shut. We are not called in every situation

to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, we are instead called to make sure

that the words that come out of our mouths are ones that build up, not tear down. That our

words are ones that give life, not crush another’s spirit.

Here is our section for this month:

The Eighth commandment:

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

What does this mean?

We are to fear and love God so that we do not betray, slander, or lie about our

neighbor, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain his actions in the kindest way.

1. “Bear false witness” brings an image of a courtroom. How can this image help

us follow this commandment better?

2. Notice what Luther says at the end of his explanation. How does that change the

meaning of the commandment for you?

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

God’s peace,

Pastor Serena

Perfectly Imperfect Sometimes life lessons come to us in the most unexpected ways. A couple of weeks ago I was talking to one of the foster moms who helped establish the Foster Love Closet. For those that might not yet know, FLC is our new ministry located in the old nursery school building. She expressed her disappointment that the paint she applied to the posts on the sign outside their building did not adhere properly. She continued to explain that earlier in the year when she had painted the posts they were perfect, but now if you look, much of the new black paint is gone, exposing the old redwood color beneath. Yesterday a new FLC sign (a big thank you to Dave and Kathy Ludwig, morning service, from Arrow Portable Signs, on a job well done!) was mounted on those posts. I went and looked at the sign and was very happy on how it came out. And my eyes were then drawn to those posts. The ones with the flawed paint job. As I looked at them, I thought to myself…… “hmmm, I actually like the way they look. They have the look of distressed wood which is in vogue nowadays. I don’t think a skilled painter could have done a better job trying to achieve these results on purpose”. And then it hit me. We all are like these posts. We all have flaws. It’s what makes us all unique, it’s part of our character, it’s what makes us, us. The choice is ours when it comes to these so called flaws. In ourselves and what we perceive in others. We can decide to see them in either a positive light, or not. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Many times, being imperfect is……….perfect. Blessings, Rick Krueger

A few friends who understand me and remain my friends;

A work to do which has real value,

without which the world would be the poorer;

A mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed;

An understanding heart;

A sense of humor;

Time for quiet, silent meditation;

A feeling of the presence of God;

The patience to wait for the coming of these things,

With the wisdom to recognize them when they come. Amen
