The Totty Cup was donated by a

Goldthorpe Cinema manger, Russell

Totty, in the 1920s

Originally it was a “senior school” competition but is

now a primary school competition.

The Don & Dearne Sports Association ran this compe-

tition as well as a representative team for many years.

The Clarke Shield was for those schools that were

knocked out in the first round of the Totty Cup. This

changed to the Barlow-Salmons, when Frank Barlow &

Geoff Salmons donated a trophy in 1974. They had

both enjoyed their time playing Don & Dearne football

and wanted to give something back.

The Story of Jorge Robledo

It is said that Jorge played in the Totty

Cup Final, the Montagu Cup Final, the FA

Cup Final and the World Cup Finals.

Jorge is front centre of the photograph of the success-

ful Brampton Ellis team of 1939. Their trophies in-

cluded the English Schools Cup.

Born in Chile in 1926, he emigrated to with his family

to Brampton in 1932. After school he worked as a

miner before Barnsley signed him and his brother,

Ted.

After 3 seasons and 45 goals for Barnsley, Newcastle

United were only interested in signing Jorge, but he re-

fused to move without his brother.

At Newcastle, Jorge became the first foreign player to

be top score in England. He was the Sergio Aguero of

his day!

Chile recruited Robledo for

their 1950 World Cup Finals,

even though he spoke no

Spanish. He played against

England and scored in a 5-2

victory against USA.

He managed to score New-

castle’s winning goal at an

the 1952 FA Cup Final against Arsenal. This moment

was sketched by an 11 year old John Lennon, which

then appeared on his 1974 album cover, Walls & Bridg-

es.

Ted went back to Chile to play for Colo-Colo in 1953,

and he was soon followed by Jorge. He spent the rest

of his days in Chile, retiring in 1961 and passing away

in 1989.

Sadly, his brother died in mysterious circumstances in

1970, aged 42. He fell from an oil tanker into the sea

off Dubai—his body has never been found.

Some ways to keep up to date with the 2019 competition, as well as reliving the past finals, including 2018.

We are keen to fill the gaps in the competition’s history. Please help by sharing these with any-one who may have played in the Totty Cup, the Barlow-Salmons, or represented the Don & Dearne.

Extra Time If the teams are level at the end of normal time then 10 minutes of Extra Time will be played. If they are still level, there will be a 2nd period of Extra-Time. If they are still level, the match will be replayed on Thursday 12th April.

Respect Please remain at one side of the pitch, behind the Respect barriers. The other side of the pitch is for the coaches and substitutes. There should be no spectators immediately behind or near the goal (even the keeper’s dad!).

We strive for school football to be played in a sporting spirit without the urgency to win at all cost. Please keep your comments positive.
