Administrator’s Letter Welcome, and thank you for reading this month’s Hilltopper Newsletter. It’s difficult to imagine the calendar rolling over to the year 2018, as yesterday seems to have been our transition to a new millennium and with it the dread of the Y2K virus. Today, almost two decades later, much has changed. Now as we move into another holiday season, we have the opportunity to reflect and give thanks, especially given the events of the past year. As a school district, we’re continuing to work on our curriculum, instructional, assessment, grading practices, and expect to move toward a standards based report card for our Elementary students for implementation by Fall 2018. In education, as in all aspects of life, change is the one constant. Part of these changes include our work to provide a quality learning experience for each child who walks through our doors. Moving forward into 2018, the Board of Education will once again consider whether to move forward with a referendum. From the community discussions we had several years ago, district’s such as Cambria-Friesland rely on local referendums to meet the financial needs of the school due to limitations imposed through the current Wisconsin funding model. Student enrollment has the largest impact on how much revenue a school generates. It’s a simple formula, the more students a school has the more money can be generated at both the state and local levels. Districts, such as Cambria-Friesland, that experience stagnant or declining enrollment face the challenge of less dollars, but still need to maintain high and rigorous academic standards. As we proceed forward with a decision by the Board regarding an April referendum, there will again be opportunities for members of our community to provide much needed input.

State Report Card Update

As you know the state report cards have been released and overall growth by the district was significant. As much as the district performed better, there still remains concern regarding the methodology and validity of the report cards. As shared by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the report cards are to be read and interpreted with caution as the reason for the wide range of changes can’t be fully explained by the state. We don’t see these report cards being discontinued, but as a district we can and will work with the state to ensure the cards in fact provide a valid assessment to a district’s overall performance. Included in this newsletter you’ll find an in-depth analysis and comparison of this year’s and last year’s report cards that will hopefully provide an insight, to not only how our district performed, but also why there remains concerns to the overall validity of the card itself.

Timothy L. Raymond, Ed.S District Administrator

School Report Cards - Heading in the Right Direction

2016

2017

Over the past two years, legislative action has changed the computation methodology of overall report card scores for schools and districts across the state of Wisconsin. During that same timeframe, the familiar state WKCE tests completed via traditional pencil and paper were replaced with updated forms of testing for all grade levels completed via computer. The change in testing format allowed for a wider variety of question types beyond multiple choice and increased focus on student ability to show a depth of knowledge and understanding. The legislative changes changed the way different aspects of the school report cards were weighted and required an entirely new process for measuring growth. A year ago, the Cambria-Friesland district came face to face with the implications of how these two changes (legislative requirements and assessment formats), combined together. The school report cards for the 2015-16 school year brought a spotlight to the district highlighting the need to more aggressively pursue many changes that had already begun.

2016 2017

District Report Card 41.6 Fails to Meet 65.4 Meets Expectations

Elementary Report Card 51.6 Fails to Meet 71.3 Meets Expectations

MS/HS Report Card 51.3 Fails to Meet 59.9 Meets Few Expectations

Overall ELA Percent Proficient/Advanced 31.3% 38.2%

Overall Math Percent Proficient/Advanced 25.5% 29.2%

Aggressive evaluation of curriculum and implementation of different instructional strategies are having an impact. This year, the public release of state report cards showed the district is making progress. We are seeing improvement in all areas and at all levels; however, there is still more progress to be made. For example, prior to the 2016 report card, the district had already identified a need for a math curriculum that builds conceptual understanding and computational fluency and emphasizes the use of language. We recognized that the new state math Forward assessment requires students to

Page 4: The Topper Times - Cambria-Friesland School District 2017 newsle… · The Topper Times No School Christmas Break Friday, December 22, 2017 Through Monday, January 1, 2018 Classes

understand math rather than simply complete calculations. Origo math was adopted at the elementary level in 2015-16. The next step was taken when the Middle/High School evaluated secondary level curriculum that would build a similar type of conceptual understanding and use of language in math which led to the adoption of CPM (College Preparatory Math) curriculum this year in 6th and 7th grade as well as Pre-Calculus. This will be expanded to other courses over the next few years. New English Language Arts curriculum is also being implemented this year PK-8th grade for similar reasons.

6-12 Mathematics

K-6 English Language Arts

You may notice that overall score changes in the report card are much greater than you might anticipate given the amount of actual improvement in test scores. Cambria-Friesland is not the only district noticing such fluctuations. After reviewing report cards throughout the state, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) has noted that score fluctuations are larger and more widespread this year than would be expected and has recommended a cautious approach to interpretation of this year’s report card scores. Schools and districts with a greater than 10 point fluctuation in growth and overall scores are indicated with a ^. You will notice both the District and Elementary report cards include this indicator. DPI has noted that these larger fluctuations are most common in smaller districts where statistical volatility is more common. At this time, it is unclear whether or not this volatility will continue for small districts each year. For this reason, the Cambria-Friesland District views our overall State Report Card scores cautiously this year. However, it is believed that the increased number of students scoring Proficient/Advanced and the decreased number of students scoring Below Basic is a strong indicator that we are headed in the right direction and improving our preparation of students for success.

Elementary Counseling Corner Welcome to winter! As we continue our trek through the holidays I hope you can spend some time relaxing and spending time with those who matter most. During this time our children are often consistently occupied with exciting new things or with relatives in town visiting. Then, as if a heavy cloud comes through, boredom sets in. The moments after the hustle and bustle of the holidays are often filled with boredom. Aunts, uncles, and cousins return to where they come from and the excitement of new toys dies down. For many, this is a common progression. So, this begs the question...what do we do when we’re bored? Do we occupy ourselves with screen time or video games? What do our children do when they’re bored? Please forgive me that my talk about being bored may be a little boring, but before you turn the page, ask yourself, are you comfortable being bored? Are your children comfortable being bored? In our digital age of instant gratification, it has become more and more difficult to be comfortable with being bored. I’m not trying to suggest that we shouldn’t get bored. Quite the opposite. Research would suggest that there are two key traits that successful adults have as children: being comfortable with boredom and trying difficult things. This study suggested how boredom is key to learning. Let’s be honest, some subjects may be more boring than others. Some children may not get as excited about some subjects as others. What students who succeed have in common is that they are comfortable with the boredom and patience required to learn some new concepts. This plays into the next key trait: trying difficult things. When we take on a difficult task we experience resistance, “This is too hard” and “This isn’t worth it” may be common phrases heard. So, how do we help our children embrace boredom and patience? It may be harder today than in any other time in human history with the abundance of apps and technology dedicated to staving off boredom. Here are some of my suggestions for helping young ones develop the patience to be comfortable with boredom and be more ready to take on difficult things:

1) Try games with more open ended rules 2) Limit screen time or be involved with screen time

3) Schedule creative time where a child can create artwork or a game rather than

being structured by the rules of a video game or YouTube video Ultimately, when we protect our children from boredom, we are doing them a disservice. Through boredom we get the clear thinking that develops Apple, Facebook, or the Theory of Relativity! Thank you for your time and I hope you have a boring (but not too boring!) break!

CF Students Participate in Trailways North Honors Choir & Honors Band

On Monday, November 6th, seven of our high school choir members, along with approximately 75 students from other schools, participated in the Trailways North Conference honors choir. This year, it was hosted by Oshkosh Lourdes Academy. The clinician for the day was Dr. Eric Barnum. Dr. Barnum is the head of vocal music at UW-Oshkosh. The day was intense as the students worked together in their vocal sections to prepare 5 songs for the concert. Those from CF in attendance were sopranos Delaney Agnew, Faune Fischer, and Ariel Krieger; altos Talia Burmania, Dani Greene, and Gabriela Gomez; tenor Carter Smits, and bass Derek Schumacher.

Nine Cambria-Friesland high school students participated in the 2017 Trailways North Honors Band held at the Heidel House Resort in Green Lake on November 13th. The all-day event, which culminated in a 5:00 p.m. concert, was under the direction of guest clinician Chris Gleason. Mr. Gleason is a band director with the Sun Prairie Schools, and was recently honored with being selected the 2017 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. One hundred twenty-five students, representing the member schools of the Trailways North Conference, practiced throughout the day for the early evening concert. Participating from CF were Ariel Krieger, Devon DeYoung, McKenna Murphy, Talia Burmania, Travis Hahn, Adam Draheim, Chloe DeYoung, Jacob Raymond and Samuel Johnson.

Thanksgiving Games in the Library To go along with the story Turk and Runt by Lisa Wheeler, first and second graders used their imaginations and a few craft supplies to design turkey disguises during library media class. Mrs. Scheid read 1, 2, 3 Thanksgiving! with the CEC children and then they rotated among Thanksgiving/Turkey themed activities that helped them use their fine and gross motor skills. The activities included "Stuff the Turkey", "Feed the Turkey", "Pin the Feather on the Turkey" and "Feather Races".

Academic and Career Planning - Career and College Readiness - Importance of Business Connections

Business connections is an integral part of the Academic and Career Plan at Cambria-Friesland School District. If you are working, you are working for a business or you may be self-employed. Business has a clear picture of the type of employer that they would like to employ. Students need to be aware of the skills that are needed to be a good employer. Allowing students to view your business in operation (field trips) gives the students an idea of what your business tasks are. Students don’t always have a clear picture of what that industry or business encompasses. Seeing the employees use the different types of machines/technology can make the connections between what students are learning in school to what is needed in different careers.

When a student has narrowed the career search down to one, two or three careers it is important for that student to be able to see those specific careers in action. Job shadows, clinical experiences, internships, information interview or being a career coach/mentor are just some of the ways students can experience the tasks of that career.

If a business employs a student while in high school, the youth leadership skills or employability skills certificate program could be used to make direct connections between employment and learning the 21st century skills of thinking, reading, communicating and performing in various contexts. These skills are also emphasized in the various youth apprenticeship programs. Youth apprenticeship programs are certified through Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

So, what can you do? Talk to your child about the career that you have, check to see if your employer will let you bring your child to work for a period of time, and encourage your place of employment to get involved in the schools within the area.

F.B.L.A.

The main fundraiser for FBLA is Scrip orders. Holiday shopping made EASY! Order your gift cards by December 1st. If you buy groceries, gas, shop at Walmart or give gift cards, consider purchasing Scrip cards. A percentage of your purchase goes directly to the FBLA fund without extra cost to you. You can even renew or purchase your Amazon Prime subscription through Scrip. Delivery will be a couple business days later. If you are looking for a particular vendor, let me know. It may not be on the form so far. Denominations can vary on occasion. Scrip orders are due December 1st and again December 15th for the Holidays. In 2018, they are due the first Friday of each month through June 2018. Complete the form in the newsletter and turn it into the MS/HS office or Room 116. Or go to https://shop.shopwithscrip.com/ and create a family account. Enter the enrollment code 1EDF7B973799L and click “Register”. Presto pay is used for automatic payments for either debit or credit cards. Both of these offer greater rewards to the FBLA fund. Without the support of the Scrip Program funding, the FBLA would not be able to attend conferences at no cost to the students. We're looking forward to an exciting year in FBLA!

YEARBOOK We are still accepting orders for Yearbooks! Complete the attached form and return to the office or Room 116. The price is $50.00 without personalization.

BUSINESS ADS WANTED FOR 2017-18 YEARBOOK By advertising locally, you support the customers who support you. We appreciate all the businesses that have already ordered their advertising in the upcoming Yearbook. If you haven't, don't miss your opportunity. Complete the Ecommerce Ad form and send it along with your ad copy and check to Cambria-Friesland High School. We would be happy to typeset your ad with any personal message to our graduates.

2018 GRADUATES AND PARENTS! Once you get your Senior pictures taken and find your baby and youth pictures, submit them to the Business Ed room Yearbook class for scanning and use for the Yearbook and graduation. Parents: Yearbook ads for your graduate are designed and placed in 1/4 page, 1/2 or full page in the Yearbook. There is special pricing for parents of graduates. All parent ads and Senior pictures MUST be received by December 1st.
