Hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher Jose Rivera was recently drafted in the 21st round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. The Puerto Rico native went 2-3 with a 2.97 E.R.A. in 33 1/3 innings for the Rebels this season. According to Head Coach Chris Rateike, Rivera is projected to be a major league set-up reliever with mid-90’s velocity. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• HCC Paramedics Walk to Cure Cancer The HCC paramedics class participated in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event in Hillsboro on May 20. The team name was “Medics for the Cure”, and they raised a total of $1,300! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Police Academy Creating Some Noise “Always been tubeless!” If you’re on the Hillsboro Campus this summer and hear gun shots, don’t be alarmed! The Hill College Police Academy is going full force, and the students are working on their aim. As part of the academy’s curriculum, students have to qualify with a pistol and shotgun from different distances from the target ranging from three yards to 25 yards. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• JCC Hosts Bioterrorism Simulation The VN and EMS programs recently went through a bioterrorism simulation on the Cleburne Campus. “The use of simulation provides learners with opportunities to experience scenarios and intervene in clinical situations within a safe, supervised setting without posing a risk to patients,” Vocational Nursing Director Renee Johnson said. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Quick Cuts: Things to Note HCC Cosmetology summer hours are 9 a.m. - Noon and 1-4 p.m., Mon.-Thurs. The designated smoking areas for JCC are the south side of the Technology Building and the gazebo between the Student Center and the Library. Incoming sophomore women’s basketball transfer, Shamonte Lanfair, will participate in the All-Star Event hosted by the NJCAA Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association at Pensacola State College in Pensacola, Fla., on July 10. Lanfair played last season at Northwest- Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals, Ala. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• JCC Cosmo Helps Special Needs Kids The JCC Cosmetology Department performed 88 services for 42 special needs students getting ready for their prom on Fri., June 10. The cosmetology students provided haircuts, shampoos, manicures and pedicures. These special needs students are being trained with job skills by the Community Opportunities, Inc. Workshop located in Keene. Fun Fact: Consumers use approximately eight - nine sheets of paper per toilet use.
