Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATE PASTOR

Dear People of St. Barbara, In today’s Gospel, Jesus is very tough to the scribes and Pharisees. He says that all they do is only be-cause they want to be seen. And he says that the scribes and Pharisees see themselves as better people than everyone else. But the most important words Jesus says are that “we have to remember that all of us are brothers and sisters and we have one Father in heaven”. I think today’s Gospel is about pride in a negative sense. The scribes and Pharisees were proud because they thought that they were the smartest and they knew everything. Because of human pride, people suffer. People built higher and higher buildings; they knew how to do this but, morality is falling down lower and lower. They are eloquent and they talk more and more, but they pray less and less. Today people have many ways of communicating, but they don’t get closer to each other at all. People have huge houses with big and comfortable beds, but their families are smaller, broken and tired. People are always in a hurry, but they don’t know how to wait. They run around in order to live a good life, but forget about life eternal. I think everything has its foundation in pride. Pride changed the human being the same way like it changed an angel – one of the most beautiful crea-tions. Because of pride, the angel was changed into an ugly demon. In a moment when the angel said to God, “I will not serve you, I am smart enough – I don’t need you”, he began to be a devil. The same is true in our lives. It doesn’t matter what you are do-ing in society – what position you have – you have to remember that all of us are brothers and sisters. Some brothers and sisters are smarter, some are older with more experience, but all of them should serve each other with love and humility. Because the rea-son you are smart, you have more knowledge, you learn faster and you have more experience is because you received a gift from God. I say this to every profession. If you are a teacher, a lawyer, a policeman, a doctor, a priest or nun, you have to remember that you have been called to serve and to help people find the way to salvation. You were called to lead people to God.

A person who is proud hates to be corrected. Every-thing he does and says must be good. You must re-member that you are only people who make mis-takes, don’t know everything and, because of this, you have brothers and sisters around who can correct you with love.

Fr. Andrzej

Last Sunday, Fr. Arthur and I attended the Christi-fideles Award ceremony at Holy Name Cathedral. Our honorees this year were the Cabrera Family. For all of us, it a very touching experience, because among almost 1,000 people – representatives of all parishes of the Archdiocese – our parishioners were recognized for their dedication to their parish. They went there as your representatives, but I think all members of our parish should go because, in my opinion, all parishioners of St. Barbara should be nominated for the Christifideles Award. Thank you to the Cabrera Family for being our representatives.
