Pastor Lundula’s Greeting—May 6, 2015
What do we know about the Second Sunday in May?
The second Sunday of May comes to us with a double celebration: the Mother’s Day
and the Festival of the Christian Home.
Mother’s Day is a special day that we honor all mothers, grandmothers and even
great-grandmothers. According to The United Methodist Book of Worship, this
tradition began in its present form with a special service in May 1907 at the Methodist
Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The service was organized by a
Methodist laywoman, Anna Jarvis, to honor her mother, who died on May 9, 1905. By
1908, Anna Jarvis was advocating that all mothers be honored on the second Sunday
in May. In 1912 the Methodist Episcopal Church recognized the day and raised it to
the national agenda.
The second Sunday of May gives us another opportunity to observe the Festival of the
Christian Home. On this day, we celebrate the gift of the Christian home as we affirm
the wholeness of the Christian family. In other words, this festival is another
opportunity to be thankful to God for the blessing of each other in the Christian
Church.
Combining both Mother’s Day and the Festival of the Christian Home, the second
Sunday in May, becomes a special Sunday that brings us together to thank God and
honor mothers and grandmothers in our church family. The Festival of Christian home
helps us who have mothers around or still alive, those whose mothers are not nearby,
those whose mother are experiencing the peace of Christ in heaven, to go beyond the
biological boundaries to feel the blessing of the mothers God has given in our church
family of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, in our community and in the world.
As we look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day and the Festival of the Christian
Home, I would like to invite you all to join and support the ministry of our children
and youth as they lead us in worship this coming Sunday.
Happy Mother’s Day!
In Christ,
Rev. Dr. Okitakoyi Lundula

It’s that time of year again—time to start thinking about Vacation Bible School!! We will have an ecumenical Vacation Bible School with several other churches. Vacation Bible School will be held here at St. Luke’s!!
This year we will be taking a trek through Thailand! Children will get a chance to learn about being a Christian in Thailand. They will also get a chance to learn more about what life in Thailand is like! I’m so excited! Please look at your schedule and see if you can help in any way!!
We will begin with supper for families at 5:30 p.m. and then gather in the Sanctuary for the opening ceremonies at 6:00 p.m. We are in need of some wonderful volunteers to help with Vacation Bible School. Youth older than 6th grade are welcome to help as well. If you have some time for teaching, leading a group, assisting with crafts or acting, then there is a job for you! Please fill out the volunteer form below and submit it on Sunday or mail to St. Luke’s UMC, 1199 Main St., Dubuque, IA 52001!

CWS Blankets Sunday, May 10
The recent earthquake in Nepal killed and injured many
thousands, and destroyed their homes. Wars, earthquakes,
floods, and drought are forcing millions of people around
the world to flee for their lives with little or nothing. We
here in St. Luke's can do something immediately to help.
Our United Methodist denomination participates in
Church World Service, and Mother's Day is Blanket Sun-
day. For every $5 you give, someone who desperately
needs it will be given a blanket for protection and survival.
Cards and envelopes for contributions are in the South
Hall or you can place your contribution in the offering
plate. Please write your check to St Luke's with a memo
line "CWS blankets", and provide some love and hope to
those in need.

St. Luke’s UMC Responds to Nepal Quake
Brothers and sisters, as a global denomination, the United
Methodist Church is committed to responding to
the devastating earthquake that cost thousands of lives on
April 25, in Nepal. Because we are one in the Lord, I
would like to invite the St. Luke’s family to put our love
in action by giving a LOVE OFFERING that will be sent
to the people of Nepal through our UMCOR (United
Methodist Committee on Relief). How can we give?
On Sunday, May 3 and May 10, in additional to our
regular offering, there will be a basket at the back of the
sanctuary for that special collection. You can also send a
check or envelope to the church office throughout the
remainder of the week that would also go along with this
special collection.
Thank you St. Luke’s family for your being the Body of
Christ and the church in the world.
In Christ,
Pastor Lundula

Let the Gardening begin!
The planting has begun. We now
have some spinach, lettuce, radishes,
and kohlrabi planted. Volunteers are
needed for this year’s garden. You do
not need to know anything about
gardening to be a volunteer. Each task
is broken into steps and someone is
always present to explain what tasks need to be done. Vol-
unteers also will be needed at harvesting
time.
Call Mary Purdy at 563-590-5313,
e-mail [email protected] or
sign up at church if you would be willing
to help. Any amount of your time is
appreciated!
Directions to plot: Go east on Hwy 20
into Illinois and travel approximately 12 miles toward Galena.
Just after the pavement narrows to two lanes is an intersection
of Hwy. 20 and 84 N. Get into left turn lane to turn onto Hwy
84. Travel approximately 2.2 miles from this intersection.
Mary’s house is the 5th house next to the highway (brick two-
story).
The Secret is Out!
Invitation and Welcome invites
you to join in the fun and kick
off the summer on May 31 at St.
Luke’s. The day starts with an “amazing race” Scav-
enger Hunt around Dubuque from 2:00-4:00 p.m
with “fabulous” prizes! Everyone meets at Murphy
Park following the scavenger hunt at 4 p.m. to
continue the fellowship with an all-church picnic
complete with brats, hot dogs, chips & lemonade.
Please bring a dish to share! Serving at 5 p.m.
Scavenger Hunt details and team sign-ups will be in
the south hallway starting Sunday, May 10!
Planned Giving to St. Luke’s
Did you know that preparing an estate plan is good
Christian stewardship as well as a very intelligent
and thoughtful act? It is saying thanks to God,
expressing your love and concern for family, and
showing charity to others. Have you considered
naming St. Luke’s as a beneficiary in your will or
living trust?
There are many ways that this can be done, with or
without some very excellent tax advantages for the
person or persons giving the gift. The gift could be
a set dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, the
remainder after other gifts have been made, or a gift
that part of the estate left if designated heirs are
deceased.
St. Luke’s already has an endowment fund estab-
lished through the estate plan gifts of previous
members. This endowment currently provides funds
to various activities on a quarterly basis including:
mission work, youth ministries, and the operational
budget of our church. In the past it has provided
monies to help with special projects including
renovations to the sanctuary, the renovation of the
old parsonage, and the purchase of a new one. Gifts
of any kind to St. Luke’s can assure your continued
participation in the life and mission of this church
far into the future. Gifts given with an eye to the
future and the trust that future leaders will be
capable of using those gifts wisely are especially
appreciated.
Please prayerfully consider if this is something you
are interested in doing and let us know if there is
any way that we can help you accomplish it. No gift
is too great or too small.
Your St. Luke’s Finance Committee
A s I scanned the latest issue of RESPONSE magazine I
was startled when I read "Mother's Day is a day to cele-
brate all women who mother." You all had a mother and
probably a good one. The years passed and you became a
mother and probably a good one. But some of your friends did
not become mother's. It might have been by choice or it may
have been other issues. Many with no child born of their flesh
raised nieces, nephews, orphans. Many men have had to be
both a mother and a father in their family.
I went through various stages as most of you have. You start
by honoring your mother. You become a mother and you find
yourself still honoring your mother while receiving honors
from your children. The third stage is when your mother dies
and you become the recipient of honors from those you have
nurtured. I find I have reached a fourth stage-lucky me.
My children will honor me this year. But I wish to honor
certain friends who by their nurturing are making my life
richer today. I do appreciate their motherly Impulses even
though I try to keep aloof and remain independent.

Change is something that happens in everyone’s life.
Sometimes those changes are messy and difficult to
figure out. Sometimes change is a positive event that
brings much happiness.
This past school year has been a year of big changes
for many of our youth. During our youth group time
we looked at how those changes affected their lives.
Many of our youth are beginning middle school, mov-
ing to a bigger school with more kids. Some of our
middle school kids are finishing up their time at the
school they have called home for the last 3 years and
will be moving on to an bigger school with even more
kids.
Our high school youth are trying to figure out how to
manage the increase activities and decreased time
available for things like youth group. One of our youth
spent most of her year battling health conditions that
made her unable to maintain a normal life for several
months. Each of these changes has had positive and
negative effects on their lives.
We took a look at these changes and how we can use
our faith to get us through. The faith we need to help
us through aren’t always as easy as praying or talking
to God. Sometimes our faith is shown through the
friendship of others or the support of our church. This
is what the youth decided to use as our theme for the
youth service on Mother’s Day. We want everyone to
realize that while change is sometimes hard, if we turn
to God and use our faith we can get through any
changes that come our way.
