Marc on the summit of Mount Saint Helen's on July 25,2017
I hope that all of you enjoyed Beacon Hill's 33rdAnniversary Week and were able to take full advantageof all the exciting events. The word spirituality meansdifferent things to each individual that you might ask.In July, I went on a spiritual journey into the mountainsof Washington and Oregon. It was a time for me toenjoy the solitude, peacefulness, and to quiet my mind.On this journey, I climbed in Crater Lake NationalPark, North Cascades National Park, Mount Baker, andthe creme de la creme of the Pacific Northwest, MountSaint Helen's. This climb took 14 hours from base to
summit round trip. As 1 took my last few labored stepstowards the summit, elation, joy, and emotionovercame me. At that point 1 knew that I had reachedmy goal. I plan to share my spiritual journey with youin a presentation in the near future.

Volunteer of the Month: LeRov Roath"I am a life-long resident of Lombard. I was bom in my grandparents' homeat 346 Eugenia St., which w as named for my grandmother, Eugenia Roath. My grandfather, O.J. Roath. started a real estate company in Lombard in1910. My father, LeRoy, Sr., joined him and, eventually, my fourth brother,Rollin, Joined our dad in that business. My cousin, Richard Danker, and Ibought a gas station in 1947, which we ran until my second brother. Ken,took it over in about 1952. 1 worked for an auto parts store and two autodealers, before I began Roy's Auto Repair in 1963, which was open untilabout 1993.
"We are blessed with three married daughters, five grandchildren, and twogreat-grandchildren. All of them live out of state in Wisconsin, Michigan, andColorado. Janette and I planned on staying in Lombard and knew that Beacon
Hill was our choice of a retirement residence. We moved here in 2003 and have never regretted thatdecision.
"I have been a part of the Hilltopper's Choir, Reader's Theatre, a wing leader, a member of the WelcomeCommittee, Vice-President of the Council for two years, and now coordinator of the weekly Sunday eveningVesper Worship Service."Janette, who later became my wife, moved to Lombard and started attending Lombard Bible Church in1937. Since 1940 I have held many positions at the church, where we still attend. Janette and I organized afellowship group for seniors for about 20 years. Since 2000 I have been a member of the Lombard SeniorMen's Club, which began in 1935, and I ser\'ed as president for about ten years."I am very honored to be chosen volunteer of the month. We are thankful we can live in our hometown andespecially at Beacon Hill. God has blessed us, and we will love and serve Him and others as long as we areable."

Footprints in the Sand
You often hear the old saying, "Following in the footsteps of your Father." Yes, we may do this but weleave our own footprints as we travel on our road of life. Have you noticed that as you walk along a beachyou leave footprints in the sand but on your return the footprints have washed away? What footprints do weleave on our road of life? Yes, we may follow in the footsteps of others but we leave our own footprints inthe sand of time. There is an old saying, "life is blowing in the wind." But as we all know, footprints areerased with the passing of time. I like the old saying, "li^'e life as it comes and worry about tomorrow whenit comes." We all know that tomorrow never comes. Ha^'e you ever given thought to the words "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"? Life was given to us by our Creator, our liberty was won and maintained onthe field of battle by many willing to lay down their life. The pursuit of happiness is available to each of us.We will leave behind us our footprints in the sand of time. Are these footprints to be proud of? Only timewill tell since the answer is blowing in the wind. Over the years it has been my good fortune to leavefootprints in the sand of many parts of the world in which I have worked, lived, or visited. 1 will rememberalways the many individuals who have in someway shared with me the life I have lived, a life worth living. We may follow in the footsteps of others but we leave our own footprints on the road of life. Yes, one day inthe future the footprints we have made in the sand of lime may disappear from vision but never from ourhearts. There are several things in life you never should forget. These are the various individuals who haveshared with you what life has to offer, your wife and companion, your family , friends, and teachers. Yes,we are not alone. Yes, there are some who "did it my way." but others who taught us, who guided ourfootsteps, we are not alone, so wake up my friend to the real world. Yes, we may leave our footprints in thesand of time, but if you look closely you will also see the footprints of those who have guided you and ofthose who have accompanied you on your journey through life. Time may dim their picture and theirfootprints alongside of yours in the sand of time but they are there. They do not wash away.
Team Member Spotlight: Manuela XhumariBy: Candy Bishop
New residents at Beacon Hill quickly realize that our talented team members are both culturally diverse andcommitted to making our community a great place to live.
This month we are delighted to get to know more about Manuela Xhumari (pronounced: Jumari) in theFinancial Services Department. Her area of expertise is in accounting, and she has been at Beacon Hillsince 2002. However, Manuela is personally well-known to many residents, as she initially was a server inthe Culinary Services Department.
In those early years, Manuela enrolled in accounting classes at the College of DuPage in order to pursue acareer in that field. In 2007, an opening for a part-time accounting specialist became available, and for thenext ten years, Manuela's time was split between the two departments, .lust this past April, she accepted anoffer for a full-time position in the Financial Services Department.
Manuela feels truly privileged to work at Beacon Hill, where she has been both able and encouraged topursue her interest in the field of accounting. However, she misses the daily interaction with residents. And,so do the residents who recognized and appreciated Manuela's dedication in the Culinary ServicesDepartment for so many years! She always greeted everyone with a warm and welcoming smile.
At home, Manuela cherishes her family: husband Rudolf, 17-year old daughter Jessica, and 15-year oldson, Dennis. Manuela divides her free time by cooking the family's favorite Mediterranean dishes, plus shevolunteers for the many school activities which involve Jessica and Dennis. Jessica, a senior, is on her highschool speech team, and is considering a career in science. Dennis, a sophomore, is focused on a future incomputer programming.
Like so many of Beacon Hill's team members, Manuela isa native of Albania. She and husband Rudolf are from
Tirana, the capital and largest city of Albania as well asheart of Albania's cultural, economic and governmentalactivity. It is located on the W'estem center of the countrysurrounded by hills with the Dajti Mountain on the eastand a slight valley opening on the north-west overlookingthe Adriatic Sea in the distance.
Thank you, Manuela, for your past, present, andfuture years of making Beacon Hill such a wonderfulcommunity to live in!
Employee Appreciation Fund Update...
I got a letter addressed to the Employee Appreciation Fund
July 18, 2017Enclosed is a check for $5000 for the Employee Appreciation Fund at Beacon Hill. [Nameremoved] was a resident at Beacon Hill for quite a few years and greatly appreciated thewonderful staff I am certain that it was due to their excellent care that she lived to be [\-earsold]. This contribution to the Employee Appreciation Fund is a bequest from [Nameremoved]'s estate. I am asking that you provide an acknowledgement of this contribution, and send it to me at the address below. If this contribution is tax deductible, please specify towhat extent.
Thank you.Executor, Estate of [Name removed]
I answered it as follows:
July 21,2017Dear Executor, Estate o^[Name removed],
Thank you for the generous donation of $5,000.00 to the Beacon Hill EmployeeAppreciation Fund. 1 regret that the donation is NOT tax deductible.
Near Christinas time, the fund is distributed to the staff here at Beacon Hill. The fundsdistributed are a gift and are not treated as compensation. Tin informed that this distinctionallows the recipients to receive the gifts without having to pay taxes on them. At any giventime there are around 250 members of the staff. They include ̂ 'direct" and "indirect" staffmembers. (A food server or helper in the Health Center is "direct" and a janitor, orgroundskeeper or maintenance person is "indirect." Even though the Fund is distributed onlyonce a year, the Staff works around the clock and all year long.
[Name removed] was a beneficiary of this continuous service.
Fin a resident of Beacon Hill and a member of the Resident council. It is my responsibilityto collect the individual donations, bank them, and report periodically to the council and theresidents as a whole as to the progress the fund is making.
It is my great privilege to help with this "Thank You" to the Staff. Generous bequests such asthe one from [Name removed] add immeasurably to this.
Again, Thank YouBob Hale, Treasurer, Beacon Hill Resident Council

Eric Blaustein: History in the BiblePontius Pilate: Sadist or Saint?
Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 PM in LakeshoreThe Gospels offer a surprisingly accusatory description of Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judea directlyresponsible for Jesus' death. V^tile the contemporary sources do mention Pilate's fatal involvement with theitinerant Rabbi from Galilee, they reveal a governor detennined to promote Roman religion in Judea and to
ruthlessly suppress any fonn of dissent.A Short History of the Dead Sea Scrolls & What They Tell Us
Tuesday, Sept. 26 7:00 PM LakeshoreControversy and intrigue have swirled around the Dead Sea Scrolls for nearly seventy decades. What have welearned from the plethora of textual and archaeological research? What do the scrolls tell us about the history of
Judaism and Christianity? And who were the people who lived at the Dead Sea site of Qumran?
These lectures do not deal with the theology of any denomination. They provide an insight into the historical backgroundof the sometimes strange Biblical stories. With an understanding -of the cultural and political situation in ancient times, these stories do not sound so strange any more. If you are interested to understand the Biblical story any better, join us!

Alice Love is twenty-nine, crazy about her husband, Nick, and pregnant with theirfirst child. So imagine Alice's surprise when she comes to on the floor of a gym (sheHATES the gym!) and is whisked off to the hospital, where she discovers thehoneymoon is truly over. She is actually thirty-nine years old, has three kids, and isgetting divorced. That knock on the head has misplaced ten years. Now Alice must piece together theevents of the lost decade and find out if it's possible to reconstruct her life at thesame time. . . . lT77(3/yl//c:(? by Liane Moriarty, starts with thisepisode. Imagine all that can happen in any life in ten years; are you the same personyou were ten years ago? What Alice Forgot is a thought-provoking as well asentertaining novel.
Saints for All Occasions, by best-selling author J. Courtney Sullivan, is anunforgettable novel about the hope, sacrifice, and love between two sisters and thesecret that drives them apart. Nora and Theresa Flynn are twenty-one and seventeenwhen they leave their small village in Ireland and journey to America. Nora is theresponsible sister; she's shy and serious and engaged to a man she isn't sure sheloves. Theresa is gregarious; she is thrilled by their new life in Boston withfashionable dresses and exciting dances. But when Theresa ends up pregnant, Norahas to come up with a plan ~ a decision with repercussions they are both far tooyoung to understand.Fifty years later, Nora is the matriarch of a big Catholic family with four grownchildren, and Theresa is a cloistered nun, living in an abbey in rural Vermont, until, after decades of silence, a sudden death forces Nora and Theresa to confront thechoices they made so long ago. Saints for AH Occasions explores the moving, sometimes funny, and sad ways a secret at the heart of a family both breaks them andbinds them together.
A good mystery which is also a carefully researched book of historical fiction. IronTies is a joy to read. The author, Ann Parker, earned degrees in Physics andEnglish Literature before starting a career as a science writer. Her ancestors includea Leadville blacksmith, a Colorado School of Mines professor, and a gandy dancer. The railroad is coming west, all the way to Leadville and its rich Rocky Mountainmines, not to mention its millionaires. And who is coming to celebrate the arrival ofthe Denver & Rio Grande but Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the United Statesand former commander of the Union annies.
Like other residents in the Colorado boomtown this summer of 1880, Inez Stannert is
excited about the news, but uneasy as well. Her business partnership in the SilverQueen Saloon is shaky, her husband is missing, and there is the possibility that thelawlessness of Leadville will turn, once again, to murder.
Finally, a short note about a recent donation which residents who enjoy books aboutthe West will be eager to read. Telegraph Days is by Larry McMurtry, the authorof the classic saga Lonesome Dove.
Thank you, once more, to all our donors. Recent donors include Betty Peaslee,Marge Hickey, Joyce Turner, Jean Furgal, Sandy Truax, Marilyn Payton, SallyKoebel, and Lois Funk.

A Legacy of Sharing and CaringBy Candy Bishop
How remarkable Beacon Hill is! Residents and team members routinely come together tocombine forces for the good of the community, as well as more far-reaching and worthwhileendeavors. A wonderful example is the commitment to finding a cure for Alzheimer's.
For the past 20 years, Teresa Novelli, Director of Environmental Services, has inspiredresidents and team members to participate in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer's. And, thanksto her leadership, the results are truly impressive.
Teresa attributes her dedication to this worthy cause to a past Beacon Hill resident. Sheexplains, "Gertrude Cotterman was the guiding light for my support in this event eachyear. She spoke of how the disease had affected her sister and how difficult it was on familymembers to care for their loved ones. She also confided that one day she would probably havethis disease, but hoped research would find a cure."
"Ultimately, my friend did suffer from Alzheimer's and passed away. However, I vowed tokeep her dream alive and will continue the fight in her memory. I know each resident andteam member has a personal reason to participate in this walk. We also walk for the residentsand support staff in our Lilac Unit."
This year, Teresa has created new ways for each of us to support this important effort. BeaconHill and sister-community Oak Trace have joined together on several levels. Two talentedteam members from Oak Trace, Jessica Lazzara and Luba Siryj, have created several items insupport of this cause, including the sale of small jars of fragrant body sugar scrub, large"flower" pinwheels, and small "flower" pins to be worn in one's hair or on a garment. Allitems are available for purchase at the reception desks.
Another innovative "first" fundraiser was a festive PICNIC with games and activities, scheduled to be held on August 24th at Beacon Hill and to which Oak Trace residents wereinvited. Tickets started at $10 and were able to be used in a variety of ways. As of press-timefor this publication, details of the outcome of this event were not known, however, thisreporter predicts it to have been a major success!
However, the "Grand Finale" is scheduled for Sunday, September 17, 2017The 2017 Walk to End Alzheimer's - Naperville
This is the ideal way for residents and their families, as well as team members and theirfamilies to support the cause and each other, and to have fun doing it! Everyone is welcometo sign up to join our team of walkers on Sunday, September 17th as they head for the NorthCentral College campus in Naperville. Transportation will be provided, of course.
The walk is about three miles, and is always an enjoyable experience. And, our fitness pros,Stephan and Michelle will be happy to provide tips on preparing for this upcoming event.
And, for those who prefer to stay put, but want to support the walkers, the process is simple!A contribution can be made for a specific individual or for the whole team. This may be doneat the reception desks or by computer. Teresa Novelli is happy to assist with the registrationand / or donation process. Her phone number is (630) 691-4031. For updated infonnation onwho is walking, check channel 950 or stop by a reception desk.
We salute Teresa and her team for their amazing spirit and great success.
One final note: Beacon Hill residents also have another exciting opportunity. The RushAlzheimer's Disease Center has launched a Memoiy and Aging Project, funded by theNational Institute on Aging. Once a year, participants are tested right here at Beacon HillSome tests measure physical issues, while others assess cognitive abilities, includingattention, memory?, and language. The process for participants is simple and fascinating.Organ donation is a requirement of participation. Volunteers are asked to sign a UniformAnatomical Gift Act form, similar to signing the back of your driver s license. It givespermission to remove brain, spinal cord, nerve and muscle tissue at the time of one's death. There is no visible scar and one may still hove an open casket. The procedure is performedwith respect and dignity and at no cost to the participant or their family members.More than 50 Beacon Hill residents, with no prior findings of Alzheimer's Disease, currentlyparticipate annually in this critical effort. Residents who would like more information shouldcontact Tracey Nowakowski at Rush University Medical Center, telephone (312) 942-2214.
