TEXIAN NAVY DAY ON BATTLESHIP TEXASBy: SRT Texas Navy Committee

At the sound of six bells from the Battleship Texas and black powder salvos from the Lone Star Volunteers andTexas Army cannon and muskets, Texian Navy Day commenced on Saturday, September 17th, on the bow of thegrand old ship.

Thanks to the gracious sponsorship by The Battleship Texas Foundation and assistance from the staff of theTexas Parks and Wildlife Department, The Sons of the Republic of Texas (SRT) planned and hosted a memorableevent for everyone in attendance. The SRT Color Guard, led by Tom B. Green, KSJ, accompanied by the St.Thomas’ Episcopal School piper band, provided an outstanding flag processional. One of the highlights of theevent was a precision-timed flyover provided by the United States Coast Guard Air Station Houston, during BuglersAcross America’s final notes of the Star-Spangled Banner.

SRT President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, served as Master of Ceremonies, recognizing Ship Manager AndySmith for the months of planning and coordinating with the SRT Texas Navy Committee. Steven Howell, ExecutiveDirector of The Battleship Texas Foundation, welcomed visitors on behalf of the foundation, and Russ Kuykendall,Complex Superintendent of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, welcomed everyone on behalf ofTexas Parks and Wildlife Department. Kuykendall noted SRT’s commitment to observe Texian Navy Day since2007, with previous ceremonies in Austin, Houston and Matagorda; only Hurricane Ike postponed the 2008 eventuntil the following year.

SRT Sam Houston Chapter #38 Chapter President Bobby Smith honored the USS San Jacinto (CG-56) EnlistedSailor of the Year, Chief/Master at Arms Tarleter “Tee” Reed, and runner up Fire Controlman First Class DavidBemish. Chapter member Lynden Rasch had worked behind the scenes for months in coordinating the presentationwith the commanding officer of the USS San Jacinto, and the Sam Houston Chapter hosted the sailors during theirspecial trip to receive the honors.

The Texian Navy Day ceremony honored Commodore Edwin Ward Moore of the second Texas Navy and theentire Republic of Texas Navy. The keynote speaker for the event was SRT Honorary member Dr. Archie P.McDonald, Professor of History at Stephen F. Austin State University; Dr. McDonald provided insight on the lifeof Edwin Ward Moore, comparing and contrasting the lives and leadership styles of Moore and his nemesis,Republic of Texas President Sam Houston. Dr. McDonald noted that Moore’s only victory in dealing with Houstonwas to outlive him by almost three years. With Dr. McDonald’s permission, his keynote address is available on theSRT website, under RESOURCES, then TEXAS NAVY tabs.

After the keynote address, a symbolic laying of the wreath by the SRT Texas Navy Committee and sounding ofTaps by Buglers Across America completed the tribute to Commodore Moore and the Republic of Texas Navy.Members of DRT, C.R.T. and SRT and all Admirals in the Texas Navy posed for group photos at the end of theceremony.

SECOND ANNUAL SAVE TEXAS HISTORY SYMPOSIUMThe second annual Save Texas History Symposium, hosted by Commissioner Jerry Patterson and the Texas General

Land Office (GLO), was held on October 1, at the AT&T Executive Education & Conference Center, on the campusof The University of Texas at Austin. Celebrating the 175th anniversary of Texas’ victory over Mexico, the theme ofthe symposium was “The Texas Revolution at 175: Onward was the cry!”

The symposium began with greetings from Commissioner Patterson. His lifelong passion for history began withhis grandmother telling him Civil War stories when he was a young boy. Every time he visited her, he asked formore stories; between her dips of snuff, some of her stories may have been true, according to Patterson. CommissionerPatterson shared his contention that the study and discussion of history heals wounds and binds us together.

Learning opportunities abounded for any Texas history enthusiast. The day began as Dr. Gene Smith, James P.Bevill, Dr. Stephen Hardin and Dr. Gregg Dimmick spoke on the origins, financing, military strategies and archeologyof the Revolution. An afternoon session included a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Alwyn Barr, to examine thecontributions of Tejanos, women and blacks in the Revolution. Returning symposium events included a PioneerLand Surveying Expedition on the UT campus, as well as guided tours of the General Land Office Archives and theBob Bullock Texas State History Museum. A genealogical workshop featured experts from the National Archivesand Records Administration and the Travis County Archives. Living history demonstrations by the Texian LegacyAssociation rounded out the day’s activities.

For anyone unfamiliar with Save Texas History!, the program was created by Commissioner Patterson in 2004, toconserve historic documents and maps in the Texas General Land Office while promoting Texas history. There areno public funds available for preservation of the documents and maps. As evidence of the success of the program, there was a rare public showing of Stephen F. Austin’s Registro, a several inches thick bound register of land grantsof the first three-hundred Texas colonists, handwritten by Austin’s secretary, Samuel May Williams, signed “EstevenF. Austin, Empresario.” The bound volume is intact, thanks to both careful handling and storing by the GLO andconservation funded in 2010, by the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution. SRT chapters haveadopted various maps and documents in the archives for conservation, and any SRT chapter or individual can do thesame by contacting the GLO, linked on the SRT website.

Several of the 2011 symposium participants are honorary members of SRT: Commissioner Patterson, also honoredthis year as a Knight of the Order of San Jacinto; James P. Bevill and Dr. Gregg Dimmick. Past Summerfield G.Roberts award winners are Dr. Stephen Hardin (1994 – Texas Iliad: A Military History of the Texas Revolution) andJames P. Bevill (2009 – The Paper Republic).

A 75-year-old county monument was dusted off and restored to the public eye Saturday morning (July 9,2011).

The monument honors Gen. James Smith, the county’s namesake.Descendants of Gen. Smith, including his great-great-great-great grandson, Steve Smith, unveiled the marker

just west of town on Texas Highway 64. “I wish my grandparents were here to see this” Smith, a formercouncilman, said. “It’s an honor to be a descendent of his.”

The pink granite monument was a gift of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas in 1936. When roadconstruction and development on Texas 64 picked up a few years ago, the monument was moved and eventuallyput in storage.

Smith said his father, Don, called Judge Joel Baker about getting it reinstalled. While Smith County has more than 100 historical markers, local organizations and Gen. Smith’s descendantsworked diligently to bring the marker back.

With the help of the Smith County Historical Society, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the NationalSociety United States Daughters of 1812 joined forces to write letters and help advance the process of gettingthe marker out of storage.

“This beautiful marker heralded the entrance to the county,” Baker said at the ceremony. “I believe Gen.Smith would be proud of what our county has become.”

Mayor Barbara Bass also spoke at the ceremony and declared July 9 Gen. James Smith Day in the city.“One thing about Tyler is we love our history,” she said. “To be here today to rededicate this marker is

something we should be proud of.”Smith said the general would be “very proud of his descendants” for carrying on his frontiersman spirit and

go-get-’em attitude. Gen. Smith was a soldier, planter and politician from Spartanburg County, South Carolina.According to family history, when he was about 20 years old, he volunteered in the War of 1812 and fought inthe Creek Indian wars and served as a Lieutenant under Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans.

After the war, Smith returned to South Carolina, married and started a family. He, his wife and 11 childrenrelocated to Lincoln County, Tennessee, where he led a vigilance committee against the Native Americans, according to family history.

Smith settled in Nacogdoches in March 1835 and established a plantation. Soon after, Gen. Houstonintroduced Smith to a businessman in New York. That fall, Smith told Houston he would ship 100 “first-raterifles” to Natchitoches, La., and would bring well-equipped troops to Texas from Tennessee to fight againstMexico. Smith arrived with his troops, and in April, he entered the service of the revolutionary army as captainof cavalry for the Nacogdoches Mounted Volunteers. He helped win a victory at San Jacinto, and in May 1836,he was appointed inspector general with the rank of Colonel by Gen. Thomas J. Rusk, according to familyhistory. Smith served with Rusk from headquarters at Victoria until September of that year, when he wasappointed by Sam Houston to raise companies to build forts and protect settlers west of Nacogdoches.

In 1837 and 1838, when relationships with Native Americans were rocky, Smith’s Nacogdoches plantationbecame a refuge for harried settlers from surrounding counties.

Smith commanded the Second Battalion of Rusk’s regiments in July 1839 at the Battle of the Neches, whichsaw Chief Bowl’s death.

The next spring, Smith was elected Brigadier General and took command of the Third Brigade on thenorthwest frontier with Mexico, where he remained until August 1844, when Houston ordered him to commandthe troops detached to suppress the Regulator-Moderator War in Shelby County, according to family history.

Smith represented Rusk County in the Texas House of Representatives from Feb. 16, 1846, to Dec. 13, 1847.Smith County was organized and named in his honor in April 1846. The city of Henderson, named for his

friend James P. Henderson, was built on land given to Smith for his services to the Republic of Texas.

PAST PRESIDENT GENERAL GRAVE MARKER DEDICATIONAt 2:00 PM on Friday, September 9, 2011, SRT members, family and friends gathered at San Jose Cemetery,

8235 Mission Road, San Antonio, for the dedication of a past president general grave marker for SRT Past PresidentGeneral Hobart Huson, KSJ. Tom Green, KSJ, served as Master of Ceremony, with an invocation given by AlamoChapter #40 Chaplain Cam Arrendell. SRT President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, welcomed the crowd assembledto pay tribute to the 1938-1939 President General of The Sons of the Republic of Texas. Mr. Clark told of Mr.Huson’s success in reviving the Knights of the Order of San Jacinto in 1941, originally created by Republic ofTexas President Sam Houston in January 1843. Mr. Huson was knighted in 1953.

Because of SRT’s ongoing program to mark the graves of its past presidents general, Mr. Huson’s granddaughter,Mary Ann Maxwell Oliver, had a monument erected at the previously unmarked Huson family plot in San JoseCemetery. After the family monument was erected, the SRT grave marker was able to be placed and dedicated.President General Sam F. Clark, KSJ, and Mary Ann Maxwell Oliver, unveiled the marker.

Mrs. Oliver shared a story about her travels to SRT functions with her grandfather. In the 1950s there was passenger train service from Refugio to Houston. We boarded the train in Refugio and

arrived in Houston some hours later. We almost always stayed at the Rice Hotel in downtown Houston. On one ofthese trips I saw my first color television in the Rice’s lobby. For the time it was a huge TV, nothing of course likethe big screens of today. On one occasion, I believe it was San Jacinto Day we were taken out to the battlefield ontug boats. I rode on the Sam Houston. I remember the green ribbons and gold medallions of the Knights and mygrandfather, flapping in the wind as the tug made its way down the Houston ship channel and out to the battlefield. It was a marvelous sight; one of the Knights was a priest, in his priestly attire with the green ribbon waving. I canstill just see it. We disembarked at the battlefield.

That evening none other than the Governor of Texas, Price Daniel, was invested as a knight. The ceremony usedSam Houston’s own sword. I remember the Governor and others in full kneel. At an appropriate time after theceremony, I was allowed to hold the sword. We got back on the tugs and went back to the Rice for more festivities. As a family, on that trip we went directly across the street to Frank’s Restaurant where my grandfather taught meto eat raw oysters.
