A few years ago, we used to celebrate “Christmas in Darwin in July” (do people still do that?), taking advantage of the cooler time of the year to enjoy the traditional roast turkey and Christmas pud with brandy sauce.

Of course in Rotary each year we get the opportunity to celebrate New Year’s Eve in July. Yep – Changeover. Out with the old and in with the new.

And so it was on Friday evening. Changeover dinner at The Avenue, dress Paspaley Formal, partners expected, not too much formality but let’s celebrate the past year’s achievements and prepare for more in the coming year.

Now, I don’t know who came up with idea of “Formal Paspaley” for a dress standard, but Fellows, really, faded jeans and runners definitely does not constitute “formal”. I wasn’t 100% sure of this, so I consulted our own in-house guru of fashion, culture and taste, Ray Henry. Ray told me he disagreed totally with me, thereby confirming I was right. (Actually, I didn’t really consult with Scruffy, or anyone else for that matter. But a sub-editor (and Sergeant-at-Arms) surely is entitled to his opinion.) The evening commenced on a note of high drama. The lift (not elevator) got stuck between the floors, with two Rotarians and their ladies on board. The following conversation then ensued between yours truly and the restaurant’s manageress: “Did you know there were people trapped in the lift?” “Yes, I have called for the technicians and they’ll be here in 15-20 minutes.” “Good, were you also aware that one of those stuck is His Excellency the Administrator of the Northern Territory?” And lo, in the words of the Procul Harum 1967 hit, “and her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale.”

A happy (and relieved?) John Hardy back safely with Marie!

(I’ve just re-read what I just wrote and it’s starting to look like one of Jeremy Clarkson’s

reviews of a motor vehicle in the Weekend Australian, so back to the meeting.)

A good crowd assembled and enjoyed champagne and canapés on the balcony until 1920, when the Big E rang the five minute warning. At 1925 on the dot, President Dan opened the evening and welcomed all present. He gave us a few words on how he saw the past year and reminded us of what a good year it had been. Then the main course arrived, platters of baked Atlantic salmon, baked lamb rump and vegies, washed down with copious quantities of red and/or white wine.

Once everyone had been sated, or otherwise fed, Dan got on with his handover. He introduced the outgoing Board members individually and thanked them for their support during the year.

Dan announced the award of Rotarian of the Year to Chris Tuck, then handed over the reins to Scott Perkins as incoming President

At this stage, it needs to be pointed out that neither was wearing the Chain of Office as the member who had volunteered to collect the Club regalia from the Atrium (me) overlooked the chain. So there was no official changeover of badge of office.

For his part, Scott introduced his Board of Director for 2015-2016 and my, such a lot of familiar faces, which goes to show that Scott knows talent when he sees it.

Rob Trenerry proposed the toast to Rotary International.

Hot off the press! The revised and updated 57 years of history of the Rotary Club of Darwin was picked up from the printers by Ray Fauntleroy 4 hours before the start of the changeover function. Written and edited by Iain Smith, each member present received a copy and every other member of the club will have a copy posted to them. It’s also available on the club website – www.darwinrotary.com.au

And so the night continued with a buzz of fellowship, conversation, muted laughter and general bonhomie until desserts were served.

That’s it! A relieved looking Past President Dan Easton with proud wife Rebecca.

(The club owes a big vote of thanks to Rebecca. She has been a tower of strength behind-the-scenes for the past 12 months and provided Dan with huge support during his presidency. On behalf of us all Rebecca, a very special thank you. Iain Smith, Editor)

Thus was the scene set for the evening's finale - The Auction. Apparently two artists from Utopia had donated four pieces of work for the LLL auction but it was decided to hold the auction at Changeover. In addition, Ken Middlebrook had donated a fine piece of welded highly polished metallic sculpture (a scorpion) which had been produced by one of his invited guests at his place of work. So Jim McDog, using the oratory skills honed after many years as a disc jockey and real estate salesman, played a very convincing auctioneer, emptying the pockets of Fingers, Mark Nacey and Jeff Swann and putting a small dent in KAP's pile. Jim was ably assisted by Victoria Jackson who introduced each piece and gave a short background on it. Between them they raised some $3,100 which will go to the Menzies School of Health for the HealthLab project And then the coach turned back into a pumpkin and we turned our weary heads for home.
