I have to admit I am sad that my year as Commodore is almost over. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve the members of this club. I have had so much fun, and I have learned over the past few years how much time and effort go into the operation of this club. DECEMBER 2017 USPS #122-130 Volume 59 Number 12 Circulation: 675

It’s December and the holidays are upon us. There are many wonderful holiday festivities planned. The Christmas Regatta is Saturday, Dec 2nd. Come out and enjoy a fun day on the water, and don’t forget your Santa hat. The club is hosting the King Harbor Boat Parade on Dec 9th. Sign up to participate and/or enjoy an evening watching brightly decorated boats and SUP’s on the water. There will be dinner, auction, trophies and music by DJ Skeeter after the parade. Sun-day, Dec 17th is the Club Holiday Party. A musi-cal choral group will be providing entertainment with a variety of holiday songs. And the various fleets will be hosting their own holiday parties this month. Finally, we have the club’s New Year’s Eve Party. If you enjoyed the music at this year’s Commodore’s Ball, we will have the same band rocking in the New Year. Look for more information in the weekly club email blast.

Dave Barrette’s Friday night concert at the club in November was an outstanding evening of live music. The club was packed; members young and old were singing, dancing and wiping away a tear or two. Thank you to Dave for an

enchanted evening of great music. Also, Thank you to Kathy Davidson for her awesome job as our Social Chair this year; it was great to see so many members at the club throughout the year enjoying many fun evenings of music and enter-tainment.

We celebrated another year of sailboat rac-ing with the Race Awards Party on Nov 12th. Trophies were awarded for the Spinnaker Series, His & Hers Series, Around the Point Series, En-senada Race, Cal 20 races and Twilights. Con-gratulations to the skippers and their crews who received trophies. Racing would not happen at the club without a host of volunteers. Thank you to Race Chair Dorian Harris and her committee who helped with the race sign-ins, scoring, tro-phies, and running Race Committee. I do not want to forget anyone, so my gratitude to all of the race committee/team for their commitment to our sailing program. If you are interested in helping with Race Committee, the next Race Management meeting is Thursday, Dec 7th.

Our membership continues to be close to the maximum allowed number of 500 regular mem-bers. I am tremendously thankful for the many hours spent by Membership Chair Kathy Frank, and her assistant April Pitcairn, meeting and vetting new members. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet many prospective members as part of the process. Our viability as a club depends upon a strong and active membership base.

In this, my final article as your Vice Com-modore, I would like to express my gratitude to the Staff Commodores for their wisdom and ad-vice; to my chairpersons for their commitment to the club; and to the multitude of volunteers who consider KHYC a second home. It has been an honor to serve as your Vice Commodore, and I am looking forward to serving as your Commo-dore next year. Please join me and my family at the Commodore’s Ball Saturday, January 20th for the changing of the guard.

See you around the club.

Hurray! The carpet has finally been installed after several years of talking about it. Thanks to House Chair Holly Hunter for pushing forward and get-ting it done. Shortly after that, the outside upper decks were repaired and resurfaced. The upstairs men’s room minor re-model was completed awhile ago, so the upper deck has had some major improvements for all members to enjoy. The lower men’s room refur-bishment and the patio heater are next on the list.

On the port side, Port Captain Ron and his team have been refurbishing the marks & getting repairs made to dollies to move around the docks when they are hauled out. This is done in prepa-ration for taking the docks out Sunday, Decem-ber 10 at 8am. We need all the usual suspects to help that morning. Donuts and coffee to start, with lunch for all the volunteers. If you have never come down to help, now is your opportu-nity to pitch in and learn. We are an equal oppor-tunity free labor employer! Alert! If you have a boat, trailer, dinghy or junk in the west yard, it must be removed before December 10 to make room for the docks. Anything left will be hauled away. And, yes, I will get my stuff out, too.

In my continuing education series, I would like to address the KHYC Policy 6.4 A

1. Docks and moorings are on a first come, first served basis. However the use of the docks must not conflict with a Club activity or Fleet use. Maximum duration of dock use is seven nights every 30 days, unless an extension is ap-proved by the Dock Master or Port Captain.

4. KHYC members should be courteous of visiting vessels and dock appropriately. All members using the docks overnight shall fly the Club burgee and register in the yacht log book.

So, let’s keep tight lines and sail/power forward.

At the November meet-ing, the First Mates enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving feast, complete with turkey and pumpkin pie, thanks to Fabian and the galley staff. The pretty autumnal table decorations were provided by Judy Dezelan and her crew. Note the proximity of wine bottles to the cornucopia in the photo...!

If all goes as planned, by the time you read this the First Mates and friends will have deco-rated the club for the holidays. Tracy Noble stepped up to organize the workers into decorat-ing teams—thanks, Tracy! And you might notice some new decorations around the club, as Carol Shaw donated a bunch—thanks, Carol!

The First Mates will be conspicuously ab-sent on the first Wednesday in December, as that is our daylong trip to the Riverside Mission Inn. We will tour the Inn, dine at the Old Spaghetti Factory, and then return to the Inn for a night-time tour to see the millions of lights!

You will likely see a number of First Mates helping with Boat Parade duties since they are multi-talented and always up for serving the club and its events! This is a fun parade and party!

We have elected Christina Jesperson as our 2018 Skipper. She and her team of officers and helpers will be officially installed at a January luncheon. That is the one time per year where we dine on the upper deck...with tablecloths!

Thanks to all who helped us decorate. Now we welcome your help in taking down most of the club’s Christmas decorations on Wednesday, December 27th! See you then!

We wish you a happy, safe holiday season and a prosperous 2018!

Remembering 2017

FIRST MATES Linda Marland

We would like you to join in the 26th An-nual King Harbor Boat and Paddle Craft Pa-rade on Saturday Dec 9th. Sign up your SUP’s, paddle craft, or boats. We have really cool take- home trophies for participating boats this year, if I do say so myself. (Just a hint – there’s a surf-board involved.)

There are nine different categories in which the boats will be judged, so you have nine differ-ent opportunities to take home a really fun tro-phy. Our theme is a ‘CALIFORNIA CHRISTMAS’. Still need some ideas for decorating your boat? There’s ‘Surfing Santa’, ‘Rudolph the Surfing Reindeer’, or ‘I’m dreaming of a Beach Christ-mas’. Boaters: Sign up and decorate your boat, attend the skipper’s meeting, participate in the parade and your boat will be entered into a drawing for a spot at the dock immediately after the parade. That means you can join the party right after the parade—no going back to your dock, putting your boat away and trying to get to the club before the party ends. The drawing will take place at the Skipper’s meeting on Dec 6th at 7 pm. A reminder this year: Dock reservations are required for the night of the Boat Parade - contact Tracey McMartin at [email protected]. Boat Parade registration forms are available in the office. More information is also available at KHYC.org or waterfronteducation.org.

You still have a chance to win a ride on the Grand Marshall Boat, the DISAPPEARANCE, with the Grand Marshall on the night of the parade. We are selling Opportunity Drawing tickets for a chance for two couples to ride on the DISAP-PEARANCE. Tickets will be drawn on December 2nd, and winners will be notified that weekend.

You can also just come down and enjoy a fun evening at the club. Watch the parade from the patio or clubhouse. After the parade, join us upstairs for a Chinese Auction (a.k.a. “bucket raffle”), trophy presentation and music by DJ Skeeter. The club will be serving dinner: Ham-burgers, Chili, Clam Chowder, Chocolate Chip cookies and Brownies for $15.00 per adult and $10.00 per child <10.

While the King Harbor Boat Parade is a wonderful community event, the club is not open to the public. Club members are requested to wear their name tags. Reservations for guests (6 guests per membership) are required. Guests will have to check in and receive a wristband before entering the clubhouse. Please contact the club office to make reservations.

The second race in the His ‘n Her series was originally scheduled for October 22nd. The boats showed up and went out to race, but there was NO

wind and it was really hot! So the sweltering race committee dutifully postponed the race for awhile and waited for the wind to pick up...but it never did, so the race was cancelled and the boats motored (or were towed) back to the club.

The third race was scheduled for the follow-ing Sunday, and it was a beautiful sailing day! The race committee had TWO races, with the first one being the official #2 race in the series and the second was #3. The winners were:

Our November meeting was a celebration of Thanksgiving, complete with a turkey (roasted to perfection by Rosie Vullo) and a honey-baked ham (generously provided by S/C Jerry Martin), and the folks lined up! Many friends and family members joined us for the sumptuous pot luck feast. Everyone kept to the theme, too, and brought dishes from their own family holiday traditions.

During the “Who Am I?” segment, we learned that Francie Hope once had a private pilot’s license and used to ride a motor-cycle to work; Nancy Taugner lived in Kodiak, Alaska for a cou-ple of years; and Eagle Sams has circled the globe TEN times!

We voted in the 2018 NWF officers, and we elected Denise Thorn as our fearless skipper for next year! Denise retired from Honda this year, and we just knew she wanted more work to do to fill her ‘empty days’! Ha! Denise and her team will be officially installed in early January.

As has become our annual tradition, our December 5th meet-ing will involve collecting Christmas gifts for teenagers. Julie Moore has been involved in Cheer for Children for many years, and she says the teenagers are often the forgotten ones when it comes to gift donations; the NWF is working to change that by bringing gifts geared towards teens (all kinds of gift cards, movie tix, etc.)

Then it was time for the 50/50 drawing. S/C Jerry Martin kindly donated a honey-baked ham for the raffle, so we had TWO ticket drawings...and S/C Jim Murrell won them both! Jim now knows that the NWF rules dictate that he must SELL the raffle tickets at our next meeting! Join us on December 5th to see that!

A group of Catalina Cruising Fleet members descended upon Long Beach Yacht Club one weekend in November, some by land and some by sea.

Rosie & Joe Vullo were the first to arrive Friday on their pow-erboat, STORM, and the rest of the group trickled in over the next twelve hours. Patrick Shuss & Vicky Becker, along with passen-gers S/C Burr & Francie Hope and Rae Ann Evenstad, arrived on Saturday aboard their catamaran, BAD CAT. Greg and Lynn Vavrek came by land, as their employment got in the way of their sailing plans (tsk!), but they were able to bunk aboard BAD CAT. Marty & S/C Lisa Falk arrived aboard ÜBER and…oh wait! They arrived via Uber and were able to move aboard STORM for the weekend. Tom & Evelyn Polizzi were the last to arrive on ZIPHORA, having sailed by a Mexican Tall Ship en route to LBYC.

When the group was fully assembled, they did what ALL yacht club people do---they went to the bar for a long lunch! Then they boat hopped for a while and finally ended up having dinner in the LBYC library, allegedly because of the large size of the group,

but perhaps the staff just wanted them out of sight…. The thirteen of them managed to polish off four bottles of wine that evening!

A wedding reception was in progress in another part of the club, so they were able to enjoy the sounds of SQUEEZE BOX (remember them?) from the upper deck after dinner.

At one point some of the fleet met up with LBYC General Manager Brett Coad (remember him?), who told them that the club is planning a remodeling project and is currently negotiating with the city.

The group split up Sunday morning, with some leaving early. ZIPHORA developed a fuel leak, which was repaired by Tom, Burr and Patrick, so the Polizzis could safely make it home to Redondo Beach---so nice to have people with many years of boating experi-ence at the ready, eh?! BAD CAT lingered behind in Long Beach for awhile to watch some match racing.

All in all, a great trip! Please feel free to join us for our monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7pm. All are welcome, regardless of boat status.

In October we sent sailors to the Opti Goblin Regatta at Santa Barbara Yacht Club. In the Green Fleet, Owen Pepper placed 3rd out of 38 boats, and Gabe Hasen placed 16th. All racers did a great job! Thanks to Coaches Kyle Collins and Abby Feather-stone for leading the team (photo at right).

November was a very busy month. First up was a So Cal FJ Regatta at Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. In the Gold Fleet, with 33 teams, Micky

Munns and Alex Shapiro (RUHS) finished in 10th place. In the Silver Fleet, Emma Tallman and Peyton Lieser (South/Torrance) fin-ished in 1st place out of 20 teams; Michael Fineman and Jasmine Christensen(RUHS) finished 2nd; Ben Ross and Jesse Christensen (MCHS) finished 10th; Audrey Gneiser and Alex Akstens (RUHS) finished 11th; and

Joaquin O’Keefe and Izabella Ayers (RUHS) finished 16th. Then our Opti team travelled up to Ventura for the 2nd Car-

rie Series Regatta. In the Champ Fleet of 53 boats, Scotty Hem-street finished 25th, while Kenny Keidser finished 51st. Our Green Fleet sailors competed in a fleet of 35 boats: Gabe Hasen fin-ished in 10th; Alex Beggs 16th; Myles Bartley 26th; Nick Beggs 28th; and Palmer Mays 29th. Great job by our Opti team! Thanks to Coaches Kyle Collins and Evan Hibbard for leading the team at this regatta.

Finally our FJ teams travelled down to New-port Harbor Yacht Club for the final PCISA event of the year, the Anteater Regatta. In the Silver Fleet, the RHP Team took home the 5th place trophy (Cade Morris, Drea Keswater, Lawry Braslow, & Wynslow Wilmot). The RUHS Team finished in

23rd place (Michael Fineman, Joaquin O’Keefe, Louis Swafford, Lucas Sussman, & Jasmine Christensen). In the Gold Fleet, South High/Torrance finished in 13th place (Sean Tallman, Emma Tallman, Dane Gramstrup, Luke Pond, & Peyton Lieser), while RUHS finished 22nd (Micky Munns, Alex Shapiro, Taft Buckley, & Sofia Thomas). Thank you to our coaches, Abby Featherstone and Annie Schmidt, for leading our sailors at this event.

On behalf of the KHYF, I would like to thank all of you for your continuous support. Happy Holidays to all!

In November we reviewed “Democracy in Chains” by Nancy Mac-Lean, an award-winning historian who wrote a deep history of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America.

It covers a largely unknown backstory of a seven-decades-long political agenda and strategy, pinned to the expressed belief that freedom can survive only if the rule of the majority ends. “It is not easy to un-cover the inner workings of an essentially secretive political establishment,” wrote the reviewer of Jane Mayer’s “Dark Money”, in THE NEW YORK TIMES. But in “Democracy in Chains”, Nancy MacLean does what no one else has been able to do, parting a curtain on the radical right’s mo-ment of creation.

Billionaires didn’t create this move-ment, the South did; and until we under-stand that today’s right was forged in the crucible of Brown vs. Board of Education and that its thinkers trace their ideas back to John C. Calhoun’s defense of extreme property rights, we will not see that the

hyper-partisan politics of today is only one element of a multi-pronged stealth plan to free corporations by permanently disarming democracy. The so-called ‘intellectual vi-sionary’, who came to the ruling elite’s aid, was no one’s fool—to the contrary. James M. Buchanan, a son of the South educated at the University of Chicago, won the 1986 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. The bil-lionaire Charles Koch and his allied politi-cal donors, encouraged by that kind of thinking, have built a vast apparatus to im-pose on 21st century America, a version of the ‘liberty’ stamped by Calhoun and his admirers in the South. That is why today we are supposed to accept that:

1. Corporations are people. 2. Money is speech ($). 3. Sending USA companies to

other countries to harvest their cheap labor and create jobs in their countries is good for the USA.

4. And people’s education should be privatized.

Do you see where this is going? We already have an arguably negative example today of what can happen when one of those rules is applied: Anybody with a ‘$peech Advantage’ can get elected Presi-dent of the USA!

In DECEMBER we will review “Before the Wind” by Jim Lynch.“This is a funny, and big-hearted novel.”

In JANUARY we plan to review “Origin” by Dan Brown. “Robert Langdon attends the unveiling of a discovery that will change the face of science forever.”

In FEBRUARY we plan to review “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. “Seconds before the Earth is demolished for a galactic freeway...” DECEMBER JANUARY FEBRUARY
