February Teacher Feature: Mrs. Ana Allingham

spent all nine years at Farwell High School. She is a graduate of Central Michigan University, majoring in

special education with a minor in reading. At Farwell, she serves as a special education teacher and team

teaches in English. Mrs. Allingham has a wife of seven years, and they have three children together. You can

thank Mrs. Allingham for creating Connections that Count at CMU, which is

a service learning program that positively influences students to learn group

working skills from CMU mentors. Mrs. Allingham decided she wanted to

become a teacher during fifth grade in Mrs. Pennan’s class, after winning

bingo with the word “teacher”. She also has a cousin with autism named

Mikey who made her realize she wanted to work in special education. If you

can’t find Mrs. Allingham in school, she is probably doing CrossFit,

attending auctions, wood working, or shopping for shoes! Mrs. Allingham

has a special bond with the students of FHS. She is seen here pictured to the

right with Tia Raymond and Alex Wargo. Tia Raymond says, “Mrs. A makes me laugh. She is my favorite

teacher and helps me in class.” Alex Wargo says, “Mrs. A is my favorite person, and she runs the recycling

program, which is my favorite class.” He also wanted to say, “Mrs. A loves me, and I love her back!”

senior captain Jay Thrush, who has been having a good year being back on the mat once again, the young team has done

very well. He is currently ranked number 7 in Division 3, at 189 pounds. The Wrestlers had a tough tournament in

Hartland, Michigan. Having only 5 wrestlers competing at the Hartland High School Individual

Tournament, only 2 placed. Chase Burchette had a tough weight class but managed to place 6th

Farwell Band Boosters Hosts Annual Cabin Fever Event This has been a crazy winter so far in 2019 with multiple days off from school. Icy roads, bitter cold

temperatures, and heavy snow fall have kept people cooped up indoors. It is safe to say that many people in

Michigan are suffering from “cabin fever.” The Farwell Band Boosters was able to spread a little bit of cheer

during this rough winter season by hosting the 27th annual Cabin Fever Event on February 9. Local

entertainment acts took the stage and put on an amazing show. The performances were fantastic. The proceeds

from this event help support the Farwell Bands. Thank you to the Band Boosters and all the volunteers who

made this event such a success.

Wyatt Tubbs Enlists in the United States Navy Senior Wyatt Tubbs enlisted with the United States Navy on January 8. He is the son of Kevin Tubbs, grandson

of Mike Culver (U.S. Marines veteran) and great-grandson of Bernard Tubbs (U.S. Army WW2 veteran).

Coming from a family with a strong military background, Wyatt feels proud and dignified to enlist in the

Armed Services. Always patriotic, Wyatt has a deep love of his country. He spoke this year at the Veteran’s

Day Assembly as one of the Voice of Democracy winners. His topic was “Why Every Vote Counts.” Petty

Officer Kramer is Wyatt’s recruiter here at FHS and had Wyatt on his radar due to Wyatt’s service already on

the Garfield Township Fire Department. What enticed Wyatt about the Navy

was when Petty Officer Kramer asked him how he would like to fight fires

around the world (with the bonus of seeing the Bahamas). Wyatt put some

serious thought into his future career choice and decided to enlist. He will

attend basic training this August at Great Lakes Boot Camp in Chicago, and

then go to Panama City, Florida, for additional training as a Navy EOD in

the Special Forces Unit. Prior to enlistment, Wyatt received training through

the CTE Criminal Justice program and was part of the Best Focus class that

helps students narrow down their future plans. With his passion for

firefighting, community service, and family tradition, Wyatt is confident that

he wants to pursue a career in the U.S. Navy. He has already signed for an

eight-year commitment. In high school, Wyatt has been involved in cross

country, indoor track, track, and the bass fishing club. He has been honored

by his class twice to represent them on Snowfest court, serving as a freshmen

representative and again this year as a senior. Congratulations, Wyatt. We

are very proud of you!

Zachary Carpenter Enlists in the United States Marines Senior Zachary Carpenter enlisted in the U.S. Marines during our snow day week off

from school. Zachary is the son of Patti Lilly and Melvin Carpenter. He is an

advanced welder in the CTE Welding program, earning his certifications in the field.

Athletically, he is involved in football, basketball, and track. Zach loves the

outdoors and enjoys fishing and hunting. He has been honored by his peers as one of

the senior representatives on Snowfest Court. Congratulations, Zach. Thank you for

your commitment. We are very proud of you!

throughout the month of February to local districts. The organization led by Mr. Erickson and second year

criminal justice students, wrote and receive a $1,000 grant from S4SD for driving skills. Here at FHS, Chloee

McMann and Joshua Kenny were behind the scenes helping to organize this very important campaign. At lunch

you will see either Chloee or Josh handing out information sheets and promoting the banner logo contest. A

special assembly was held on January 18 at CTE to kick-off the campaign. Michigan State Trooper Lucha and

Kingsley MEEMIC Insurance Agent Joe Kingsley were there as guest speakers. Students at the assembly got to

experience driving simulators, drunk goggle activities, and various games. Log onto the CGRESD, CTE, and/or

the Farwell Schools page to view the video presentation.

What is next? A banner with the winning logo will be placed in the schools for students to sign. Students are

The application for the 2019 Rosa Parks Scholarships ($2,000) is now available at: rosaparksscholarship.org

The application is also available (you can copy/paste into your browser) at:

https://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/4755015/Rosa-Park-Application-2019

The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation offers a $2,000, non-renewable scholarship to Michigan high school graduating

seniors. Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, financial need, and dedication to the civil rights

principles of Rosa L. Parks, whose historic stand against racial prejudice in 1955 brought her national recognition. The

Foundation was established in 1980 to provide equal-opportunity scholarships to Michigan high school seniors.

Rosa Parks Scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and/or fees, for first year of college only (cannot be

applied to room/board or other expenses). A key determining factor in judging is ‘financial need.’ Students with

numerous other scholarships (especially full-tuition scholarships) will receive a very low rating for ‘financial need,’

virtually eliminating them from contention for this scholarship. Because of this, these students may choose not to

complete the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation application process.

APPLICANTS MUST:

1. Graduate by August 2019.*

2. Have GPA of 2.5 or above.

3. Describe financial need.

4. Complete application form and essay.**

5. Document community activities.

6. Furnish official copies of high school transcript and ACT or SAT results.

8. Furnish two letters of recommendation (at least one from a school representative; also suggest clergy, community

and/or civic representative).

* Applicants must be graduating from high school in spring of 2019, with plans to enter college as a full time freshman in

the fall. You are not eligible for this scholarship at this time if you are participating in an Early College Program (13th

year of high school). You must wait until you actually graduate from high school.

**Essay question is last item on application. If you want to get a head start, here is the essay requirement.

Please write an essay of 200-300 words (include a heading/topic). Segregation was the defining social issue when Rosa

Parks took her historic stand. Describe a social issue that you think should be addressed today. How will YOU use the

principles of Rosa Parks to address it? ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET, OR APPLICATION

WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. Questions? Email [email protected].

The deadline for filing is March 1, 2019. Scholarship winners will be announced in mid-May.
