The System Unit
• The motherboard is the main circuit board of the system unit– A computer chip contains integrated circuits
![Page 6: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

7
Processor
• The CPU is the part of the computer that runs the program or executes program instructions.
• It is also known as the processor.• The CPU is located on a single electronic
component called the microprocessor chip.• The chip is housed in the system unit or
system cabinet.
![Page 8: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)

Processor
![Page 9: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
9
Processor
• The control unit is the component of the processor that directs and coordinates most of the operations in the computer• The arithmetic logic unit (ALU)
performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations
![Page 10: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
10
For every instruction, a processor repeats a set of four basic operations, which comprise a machine cycle.
![Page 11: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
11
Processor
The processor contains registers, that temporarily hold data and instructions
The system clock controls the timing of all computer operations• The pace of the system clock is called the clock
speed, and is measured in gigahertz (GHz)
![Page 12: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
12
Processor
• A processor chip generates heat that could cause the chip to burn up
• Require additional cooling–Heat sinks– Liquid cooling
technology
![Page 13: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

14
MotherboardMotherboard , called system board.
It is a main circuit board of the system unit.
The motherboard has expansion slots designed for: Expansion cards Ports to enable the computer to communicate.
![Page 15: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
15
Motherboard
The motherboard in the system unit contains many different types of chips.
Of these, one of the most important is the central processing unit (CPU).
![Page 16: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Memory
• Memory consists of electronic components that store instructions waiting to be executed by the processor, data needed by those instructions, and the results of processing the data
• Stores three basic categories of items:
17
The operating system and other system software
Application programs
Data being processed and the
resulting information
![Page 18: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
18
Memory
• The system unit contains two types of memory:
Volatile memory
Loses its contents when power is turned off
Example includes RAM
Nonvolatile memory
Does not lose contents when power is removed
Examples include ROM, flash memory, and
CMOS
![Page 19: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

20
Memory
Read-only memory (ROM) refers to memory chips storing permanent data and instructions
• Firmware
A PROM (programmable read-only memory) chip is a blank ROM chip that can be written to permanently• EEPROM can be erased
![Page 21: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
21
Memory
• Flash memory can be erased electronically and rewritten– CMOS technology provides high speeds and consumes
little power
![Page 22: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)

Expansion Slot
• An expansion slot is a socket on the motherboard that can hold an adapter card.
• Three types of expansion cards include:–Video card–Video adapter or graphics card–Sound card
![Page 25: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
25
Adapter card
Adapter card sometimes called an expansion card. is a circuit board that enhances
functions of a component of the system unit and/or provides connections to peripherals.
![Page 26: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
26
Expansion Slots and Adapter Cards
• With Plug and Play, the computer automatically can configure adapter cards and other peripherals as you install them
![Page 27: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)

28
Ports and Connectors
A port is the point at which a peripheral attaches to or communicates with a system unit (sometimes referred to as a jack)
A connector joins a cable to a port
![Page 29: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)

Ports and Connectors
![Page 30: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
30
Ports and Connectors
• On a notebook computer, the ports are on the back, front, and/or sides
![Page 31: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)

• A USB port can connect up to 127 different peripherals together with a single connector– You can attach multiple peripherals using a single USB
port with a USB hub
![Page 32: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)

A Bluetooth wireless port adapter converts a USB port into a Bluetooth port
A smart phone might communicate with a notebook computer using an IrDA port
![Page 34: The System Unit of Rose](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062811/5695d1591a28ab9b02962efb/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
