Thursday, August 22: Margaret Verble, Cherokee America

Inspired by Margaret Verble’s family history, Cherokee

America is a different kind of Western, one told from a

Native American point of view and with a mixed-race

woman at its center. Check—

member of a distinguished

Cherokee family, daughter of a

famous soldier and a slaveholder,

wife of an abolitionist—is a

necessary, revelatory addition to

the literature of the American

frontier. Fans of Louise Erdrich

and Paulette Jiles will delight in

this humorous and ultimately

hopeful story of how we reconcile

identity and place and shape the

stories of our past.

President’s News

Greetings to everyone!

I hope this letter finds everyone a little cooler and more comfortable, as we close out July and head into August...getting back to our Homemaker routines, schedules and meetings. Continue to enjoy what vacation time we have left for summer and stay hydrated and rested up!

Thanks to all who shared in Liz's retirement celebration, I know she was very appreciative of all gifts, notes and acts of kindness. We will be seeing her around, but in other areas.

Please SAVE the DATE for the Bluegrass Area Homemaker training on Friday August 2nd at the Extension office beginning at 9:00 am. If you serve as chairperson of committees, please try to be present or send an alternate. Good information will be shared.

Also, we will have our Homemaker Kick-off event on August 20th at 6:30 pm Our theme this year is "Where the Sun Shines Bright...." based from our state theme and State anthem. Be thinking of "Sun” ideas, colors like bright yellows, and positive ideas that show rays of sunshine, hope, joy etc... as we celebrate another year of Homemakers! See more information in the newsletter also.

Our biggest project is yet to come--as we host the Area meeting on October 25th--nine counties will be visiting and we are hosting theme with the theme of the Women's suffrage movement/anniversary.

We are all very excited and looking forward to much participation from everyone!

Again, as we close out the summer, many clubs will be gearing up for another great year. I thank everyone in advance for all their work, love, and gifts they will share! Let us continue to work building up the membership and spreading the importance of what we are all about--hand out those cards!

Share some SUNSHINE today!

Blessings to all!

President Alyce S. Emerson

NEW DATE Creative Selvage Bag ~ Friday, September 6th, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.: Have you been saving your selvages from your quilting projects? Well now is the time to create your selvage project—a tote made from selvages and a base fabric. You will need to bring lots of selvages—about a plastic shopping bag full—and 1 1/4 yard of duck cloth, denim or other non-stretchy strong base fabric. Cut 8 squares, 8” x 8” out of the base fabric before class; you will need the rest of the fabric, but this is a good start for class. Bring a neutral color thread, sewing supplies and a good working sewing machine. Don’t worry if you do not have an abundance of selvages—we will have plenty to share. **To cut selvages—one inch wide is nice, but smaller can work. You are looking for the markings/words, but also bring some of the other without markings for color in your project. Cost: Free, but must register in advance. Attendee provides base fabric. Kit: $10.00, instructor supplies the base fabric in a kit, must register in advance. FCS Class Policy Update Please be aware of our new class policies.

1. Please notify the office if you will be late. If you come to class 30 minutes late without prior notice the teacher may ask for you to wait while other students are taught so they do not get behind. We cannot guarantee that you will have a chance for complete instructions.

2. Only the person who has paid for the class is allowed in the classroom. If you want for someone else to attend, there must be space and they must pay for the class.

3. Please be prepared for class. Have required items, material cut, pre sewn or other instructions completed in advance. The class instructors and other member will not wait for you to catch up. People who are prepared will be helped first.

4. Be respectful of teachers and other class members as the class is taught. Keep talking to a minimum.
