THE SUN SHINES ON TICKTON CHURCH GARDEN PARTY

The sun shone down on the Church in Tickton’s Annual Garden Party and this was just the excuse people needed to come out and socialise, have fun, enjoy the refreshments on offer and help raise money for the Church. Many villagers gave up their time and talents to make the event a success, which helps significantly to maintain the life of the Church in the village. Organisers would like to thank all those who helped on the day, contributed prizes and items for the various stalls, or just turned up to support the event. Over £1,158 was raised. Well done!

CHURCH NEWS GARDEN PARTY... ... The afternoon of July 6th was a pleasant afternoon for the Garden Party which took place, for the third time,

in St Paul’s churchyard. Lots of people came through the gates to enjoy a cup of tea and a scone or cake and to spend their money at the various stalls. The plant stall and cake stall were their usual attractions for many and the tombola and bottle-bola stalls were also very popular. The tea counter and the energetic waiters covering the 100 metres from the kitchen counter to the tea-tables (well done guys) were kept very busy. £1,158 was raised for the church funds, which will help pay the bills over the next year or so. Thanks to all who helped or supported the event.

REVD. PETER CLARK... ... As previously reported, Peter is becoming fully retired at the end of August. His last service as our Minister is on Sunday August 25th, and we will certainly have a little ‘goodbye’ event at St Paul’s following the service. If you’ve known Peter in his time with us and would like to join us, we’d be delighted to see you, as will Peter! Our very best wishes go with Peter and Ailsa, as do our warm thanks for their ministry. His role as the Methodist side of the shared ministry we receive as an ecumenical partnership will be taken on by Revd Peter Cross, who is Superintendent Minister of the Beverley Circuit.

GOD’S ACRE... ... This is the new name for the project to set aside two areas of the churchyard and develop them as special ‘gardens’. The first of these is the wildlife garden, which will be on the north (road) side of the church, next to the village play area. The other will be the ‘quiet garden’, located in the back towards the boundary wall with Churchfields. Youngsters from Tickton School have been running a design competition to generate ideas for both new areas and there have been some very good entries, packed with ideas. The designs have been judged by Emma, who is a freelance artist working mainly with children and people with disabilities, and Peter, a freelance gardener/landscaper. Both live in the village and have given their time generously, and we’re sure they will continue to help the project as it moves forward. The next step is to mount a display in St Paul’s at an open evening on Tuesday September 24th where all interested can come along and see for themselves the ideas the children have put forward. There will be more details nearer the time via the church website and weekly newsletter, the school’s newsletter, and notice boards. We hope that work will be ongoing through the autumn and winter. This will involve the school as well as people from the church and anyone keen and interested from the wider community. Please come along in September and see for yourself what’s proposed.

HARVEST FESTIVAL... ... This year’s Harvest Celebration will be on Sunday September 29th and will take the form of a Songs of Praise

at St Paul’s in the evening at 6.30. There will be no morning service that day. Food and non-perishable produce given for the occasion will go to Beverley Food Bank. Y

Y6 LEAVERS’ SERVICE... ... This took place on July 17th at St Paul’s. Ian led the youngsters in singing two songs, whilst Kate led

proceedings. The Vicar joined us partway through, hot-footing it from the Carers’ Service at the Minster, and Pauline presented each student with a copy of St Luke’s gospel as a reminder of the involvement they have had with the church over their time at the village school (See page 32)

VICAR’S BLOG...SURVIVAL IS INSUFFICIENT … I have just finished reading a novel by Emily St John Mandel called ‘Station Eleven’.

Its premise is that 99% of humanity has been wiped out by a fatal strain of ‘flu. All the technology upon which the modern world relied has been lost: no electricity, computers or internet, no phones, cars or jets. Survivors form primitive communities surrounded by the ruins of former civilisation.

Some try to find meaning in what has happened by forming cults, shaped by the conviction that the pandemic was some form of judgment.

Into this predictably post-apocalyptic landscape is introduced ‘The Travelling Symphony’, a band of actors and musicians who travel from community to community to perform Bach, Beethoven and Shakespeare. Their motto, taken from a long-lost episode of Star Trek, is ‘Survival is Insufficient’, and speaks of a deeper need for beauty and meaning in the midst of collapse.

As the storylines of various characters interweave, there is surprising reflection on what has been lost and what has been gained. While life is physically harder, more fragile, and filled with a sense of bereavement and lament for all that has gone, there is also an awareness of grace, of the beauty of the world and the preciousness of simple things which a more complicated world took for granted.

An unexpected theme is that of vocation. Several characters’ stories span the period both before and after the ‘flu epidemic, and in each case the ending of civilisation has clarified their sense of who they are and what they are called to be. One character had spent his life before the collapse drifting between a series of unsatisfactory jobs before starting to train as a paramedic. After the collapse he finds satisfaction in offering the nearest thing to a medical practice in the region. A former corporate lawyer realises that in his professional life he has been a kind of ‘high-functioning sleepwalker’, and to his surprise discovers that the collapse of civilisation restores to him a freedom to be himself once more. When one of the actors in the Travelling Symphony is invited to opt for a safer and steadier form of life she replies, ‘Sure, but in what other life would I get to perform Shakespeare?’. For Christians the discernment of vocation has always been a major theme; not just for clergy and ‘professional’ church workers, but for all the baptised. What does it mean for me to live out my life under God? How can I become the person I was made to be? What does the good life look like? It isn’t easy to focus on such questions in a world so full of competing choices, demands and distractions.

Last month we welcomed Tim Kelly as the new Anglican Curate at Tickton and Beverley Minster. Tim was previously a professor of Computer Science at the University of York, so his story might prompt us to wonder why someone should give up a successful secular career for church ministry. Past experience is never wasted, but learning to discern our calling can take us in utterly unexpected directions.

‘Station Eleven’ provides a good summer reading starting point for thinking about our own vocation. We may not need an apocalypse to discern what really matters in our lives, but I wonder what would remain of us if the trappings of so-called civilisation were stripped away?

CHURCH WEBSITE... ... The Church’s website can be found easily by searching on-line for ‘Tickton Church’. Besides pages headed ‘Events’ and ‘News’ there is a ‘Downloads’ page where you can find the last few editions of Tickton Diary (in full colour!!) and a copy of our weekly ‘Notice Sheet’. This is what we give out to those who attend the Sunday service, but is available via the website because it’s really our weekly Newsletter, giving details of not only what we’re doing in Tickton, but also of things happening in the parish of Beverley Minster and the Beverley Methodist Circuit. Do have a look and see what’s covered. If you think you’d like a regular copy ‘straight to your mailbox’ that’s available too. Details are given on the sheet.

TICKTON’S WI ...

... …

TICKTON YOUTH CLUB...

... …

Hello Everyone There’s an advert running on the television at the moment with the Beach Boys hit from yesteryear “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” as the background music, so it made us think - wouldn’t it be nice for all young mums, busy career girls, multi-tasking domestic goddesses, dog-

walkers, carers and child-minding grannies to have a tiny space in their busy schedules when they could forget everything else and have a bit of harmless fun. Well, here we are! Pencil us in for a visit, perhaps in September, when you can have a couple of hours to yourself and enjoy a well-earned break from everything else. We had a bit of harmless fun at our July meeting when the posh pop flowed (no alcohol in the Chapel), the quiz questions were hotly debated and the scones met a sticky end. We’ll make up for the lack of alcohol during our August outing to the winery at South Cave, as we’ll mostly be in a minibus, so we don’t have to drive. There’ll be more scones on that day too, and again on the day we sample the delights of the new Millers Tea Room at Heron Lakes, but I’m sure we’ll manage it somehow. At our September meeting (16th) Beverley Beekeepers will be with us for an evening buzzing (sorry) with tips on how to look after our very necessary pollinators and maybe there’ll be a jar of honey or two straight from the hive (perhaps to put on our scones). In October we’ll be hosting another of the Complete Clothing Company’s fashion shows, which was very popular last year and there really were bargains to be had. Please see the advert elsewhere in the Diary for full details but basically it’ll be on Friday 11th October at 7.30pm in the Village Hall and tickets cost £5 each. We hope to see you there, or at our regular meeting on the 21st October in the Methodist Chapel, for all things foot related, I understand. Anyway, as you know, we meet on the third Monday of the month, (except for our August outing) in the Methodist Chapel on Main Street from 7.30pm until about 9.30pm. Our President, Kay, tel. 01964 543469, would be happy to give you all the details you need about our meetings, or you could take a look at us on Facebook (Tickton WI), or send us a tweet on Twitter (@ticktonwi), and the East Yorkshire Federation website at facebook.com/EYFWI has full details of all the WIs in the area if you would prefer an afternoon meeting or a different day of the week. We all belong to the same Federation but no two are the same. Don’t forget that a friendly welcome, a break from your normal routine, and a whole host of possibilities are here for you at Tickton WI. We look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes Sue Sadler, for Tickton WI

A Hive of Activity We like to think of ourselves as an extended family at Tickton Grange. A close-knit team

working in unison. Whilst there are our hosts, familiar faces well known to many of our

visitors, there are those working behind the scenes, no less important and equally

passionate. Tasked with carefully selecting each ingredient in order to create the perfect

dish, sourcing every product to ensure the comfiest of stays. Busy perfecting pastries and

plumping pillows. Each giving their best to ensure our guests have the best possible

experience. Everyone has a role to play and each is reliant on the other. No one can shine

without the support of their fellow workers, those busy behind the scenes. We are a

veritable hive of activity.

eat green, chocolate

For more than fifteen years, we have been supported by four very different hives of activity. Hidden away in a copse on our land you’ll find our honeybees. These magnificent creatures work tirelessly together to provide us with our very own honey. Perfect for breakfast spread on hot buttery toast and a key ingredient of our famous flapjack. Helen has also been known to create a furniture polish incorporating the wax made by our busy little bees. Fantastic paired with elbow grease! Much like us, honeybees are social, cooperative little souls and each hive generally homes three types: The queen, the workers and the drones. The queen, whilst her reputation goes before her, is rarely seen. She is busy laying eggs, securing future generations and keeping her house in order. The workers, all ladies, are those that we see foraging for nectar and pollen. Whilst we girls are known for our ability to multi-task, this is not so in this particular case. Each resource is collected independently, giving these busy little ladies the opportunity to focus, recognise and remember the best flower species. However, just as we encounter, the best sources change with the onset of different months and seasons and so their task is endless. Like our girls (and boys) behind the scenes, when something is worth sharing it is gathered and taken back to the hive where a taste is offered in order to motivate the others to harvest more. To direct her fellow workers to the source, the bee performs a dance, moving back and forth as she moves forward in a straight line. The waggle dance indicates the whereabouts of the source and the distance that the bees need to travel. Whilst their actions appear random to us, this really isn’t the case – they are following their very own road map. Sharing directions is a little easier for our team here however, it is not unknown for us to get a little giddy and perform a little jig or two when we find something that we think our guests will particularly enjoy! Whilst I can offer little comparison between our team and the drones, the honeybee boys, it would seem unfair not to mention them. They can be found hanging around the hive during the spring and summer months. However, with love at the forefront of their minds, they often leave to find a congregation area (perhaps their version of the local pub) in the hope of being part of a mating flight and winning the favours of the queen bee. Whilst they are often considered lazy and are cruelly starved by the girls before being kicked out of the hive during leaner months (not something we are guilty of here!) they offer something absolutely essential to the future of bees - genetic diversity proving that much like us, each has a role to play and each is reliant on the other.

HULL BRIDGE COUPLE CELEBRATE THEIR 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY...

TICKTON VILLAGE HALL… …

Hull Bridge Road couple Jackie and John Barnaby will be celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary on August 22nd. Having met at the Anlaby Park Tennis Club, they married in Kirkella Church in 1959 and after a brief spell living on Beverley Road Hull, moved to Beverley in the early 1960s.

Jackie spent most of her working life as head of domestic sciences (home economics) at Beverley High School whilst John was a director of a firm of glaziers in Hull. Over the years they have involved themselves within the village. At one time Jackie served on the parish council.

Travel was a big part of their life and their trusty VW campervan took them to many corners of mainland Europe. These days they have to make do with the view from their conservatory which stretches across Swinemoor, - a considerable compensation, as they do have a lovely aspect!

A small family gathering will mark their special day when a glass, or two, will be raised in their honour.

Discharges to watercourses from septic tanks must be upgraded or replaced by the 1 January 2020. This includes rivers and waters above ground with a continuous flow. The changes will ensure that individuals are compliant with General Binding Rules. The regulations cover most domestic properties and can be viewed on GOV.UK at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/small-sewage-discharges-in-england-general-binding-rules If an individual is to purchase a property, an upgrade or replacement will need to be agreed with the current owner as part of the sale. The following suggestions confirm what replacements are available: - A water company will be to advise if a connection to the mains sewer is possible - The installation of a drainage field to enable the discharge to enter ground - Introducing a small sewage treatment plant - Using a septic tank conversation unit which requires an Environmental Permit. Details about relevant permits can be viewed at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/discharges-to-surface-water-and-groundwater-environmental-permits To check what type of system is in place, organisations who collect redundant effluent or undertake a service for a property owner will be able to confirm. Individuals in doubt, can contact the Environment Agency on 03708 506 506 to discuss their proposals and to receive advice. Funding Grant funding may be available to groups of residents through the Routh Wind Farm Community Fund and further information is available at: https://www.eastriding.gov.uk/council/grants-and-funding/rural-funding/routh-wind-farm-community-fund/. Well, although the weather was mixed it didn't seem to affect Doug Lloyd who seems unstoppable on his new handicap (may have to adjust it slightly). Eight worthies braved the East Coast but enjoyed a day’s golf and some great views of Bridlington Bay, Doug won the match closely followed by Phil Heath, but the Doug also had longest drive and also nearest the pin, so a bit of prize sharing took place.

Links is not the easiest of courses as there is a need to be accurate on the fairways, it's

always had a reputation for its rough being hard to play from, however, a good day was had by all followed by a nice meal overlooking the bay.

Our next match will be Captain's weekend to be played at Owston Hall near Doncaster on August 16 and 17 where we will play for the Les Booker Memorial Trophy.

If any players would like to join us contact Ian McKenzie on 01694501778 or at [email protected]

Kind Regards Ian

TICKTON SCHOOL’S Y5 AND Y6 NORTHUMBERLAND VISIT...

Y5 & Y6 went on their residential visit to Northumberland in July. We had a great time and had lots of exciting experiences. We went to the Life Museum in Newcastle first of all; the planetarium show and the 4D ride were awesome.

We visited lots of castles in Northumberland. We toured Bamburgh and Alnwick castles and found out lots about their history. The Treehouse at Alnwick has some great rope bridges that are really bouncy to walk on! We also visited Holy Island and found that the castle there was much smaller.

After tea we went to the beach to play on the sands, we took quite a lot of sand home with us! We were really lucky and saw dolphins swimming in the sea on the last night.

TICKTON SCHOOL’S Y5 AND Y6 NORTHUMBERLAND VISIT (CONT)...

We had an amazing time at Northumberland! We visited Alnwick castle, Bamburgh castle, Holy island and Dunstanburgh castle. We all made lots of memories and for some of us they were our final memories with one another.
