INTRODUCTION
TO MATTHEW 25
8
INTRO TO MATTHEW 25 Just as in our study of Matthew 24, the
study of Matthew 25 is an introduction to
the Study of the Book of Revelation.
As such, the study of Matthew 25 is not
intended as a complete commentary of
that chapter.
As is Matthew 24, it is directed to Jewish
listeners.
9
ATTITUDE
10
ATTITUDE In the last lesson, at the end of Matthew
24, we saw a parable that illustrates what
the attitude of people will be to Jesus’
coming and what will happen when He
does.
Matt 24:42 Watch therefore: for ye know not
what hour your Lord doth come.
(Continued)
11
ATTITUDE43 But know this, that if the goodman of the
house had known in what watch the thief
would come, he would have watched, and
would not have suffered his house to be
broken up.
44 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an
hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant,
whom his lord hath made ruler over his
household, to give them meat in due
season? (Continued)
12
ATTITUDE46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord
when he cometh shall find so doing.
47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make
him ruler over all his goods.
48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his
heart, My lord delayeth his coming;
49 And shall begin to smite his
fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the
drunken;
(Continued)
13
ATTITUDE50 The lord of that servant shall come in a
day when he looketh not for him, and in an
hour that he is not aware of,
51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint
him his portion with the hypocrites: there
shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
14
ATTITUDE Merrill Unger says that Israel today is not
serious about preparing for their
Messiah’s coming.
He applies these verses to the remnant of
Israel to be prepared for Christ’s return,
particularly the believing remnant that
comes to belief in the Time of Jacob’s
Trouble.
Jesus spoke of that in the Parable of the
Ten Virgins.
15
THE PARABLE
OF THE TEN
VIRGINS
16
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS As we look at Matthew 25 remember that
this chapter speaks of the Second
Coming of Christ, Judgment of the Gentile
nations, and populating the Millennial
Kingdom.
17
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINSMatt 25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven
be likened unto ten virgins, which took their
lamps, and went forth to meet the
bridegroom.
2 And five of them were wise, and five were
foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps,
and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with
their lamps.
(Continued)
18
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all
slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made,
Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out
to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed
their lamps.
8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us
of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.
(Continued)
19
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest
there be not enough for us and you: but go
ye rather to them that sell, and buy for
yourselves.
10 And while they went to buy, the
bridegroom came; and they that were ready
went in with him to the marriage: and the
door was shut.
11 Afterward came also the other virgins,
saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
(Continued)
20
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say
unto you, I know you not.
13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the
day nor the hour wherein the Son of man
cometh.
21
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS Notice that Matthew chapter 25 begins
with the word “then”.
It therefore is a continuation of the
teaching we have seen in Matthew 24.
It also is a message to the Jewish people,
the people to whom Jesus is bringing the
message.
The oil for the lamps represent the Holy
Spirit.
The Bridegroom is Jesus Christ, their
Messiah.
22
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS According to John MacArthur, the parable
of the virgins thus speaks of -
“…[spiritual] preparedness of a certain
ten virgins who served as bridesmaids
at a wedding.”
He is calling them to serve at His wedding
feast.
Even though these verses do not refer to
the Rapture, the church should heed the
warning about being prepared.
23
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS The message is that Jesus is coming
again, this time according to John
MacArthur to -
“…judge sinners and reward the
righteous, that people must be ready,
and that His coming will be unexpected.
The central truth is that once He has
arrived, there will be no second chance
and the opportunity for salvation will be
gone forever.”
24
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS The foolish virgins were unprepared for
their Lord’s return—they represent
unbelievers in the Time of Jacob’s Trouble
(Tribulation).
The wise virgins believed and accepted
Him and were thus prepared to proceed
into the Millennial Kingdom and the
thousand-year reign of Christ.
25
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS J. Vernon McGee says this:
This chapter [Matthew 25] enlarges upon the
answer of Jesus to the question, ‘What shall
be the sign of thy coming?’ (Matt 24:3).
There is the parable of the ten virgins, which
tests the genuineness of the faith of Israel;
the parable of the talents, which tests the
faithfulness of His servants; and the
judgment of the gentile nations, which tests
their right of admission into the kingdom.
(Continued)
26
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINSThis chapter shows the significance of the
coming of Christ as it relates to these
groups that shall be in the world. A close
analysis of each group will reveal that it can
be stripped down to a personal attitude and
relationship to Jesus Christ….
The ten virgins do not refer to the church,
they refer to the nation Israel.
27
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS There is no Rapture found in these verses
since the context is entirely related to the
Second Coming.
Jesus had not revealed any truth
regarding the concept of a Rapture—He
was speaking to Jews about His Second
Coming—not the church about the
Rapture.
Because of this, His disciples could not
be expected to understand anything about
a Rapture.
28
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS According to J. Vernon McGee, in the
Peshitta (Syriac) translation of these same
verses it is clear that according to custom
the virgins went forth to meet the
Bridegroom and the bride.
This procession was of the Bridegroom
coming from the wedding and proceeding
to the marriage supper (See: Revelation
19).
29
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS While the marriage takes place in heaven,
the marriage feast takes place on earth.
The marriage has thus taken place and
the bride is with Him.
In this parable we are seeing the attitude
of those on earth who have been going
through the horrendous seven-year
Tribulation.
Notice in the following verses that God
has done everything that He could to save
all the Jewish people.
30
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINSEzek 20:21 Notwithstanding the children
rebelled against me: they walked not in my
statutes, neither kept my judgments to do
them, which if a man do, he shall even live in
them; they polluted my sabbaths: then I said, I
would pour out my fury upon them, to
accomplish my anger against them in the
wilderness.
22 Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and
wrought for my name's sake, that it should not
be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in
whose sight I brought them forth. (Continued)
31
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS23 I lifted up mine hand unto them also in the
wilderness, that I would scatter them among
the heathen, and disperse them through the
countries;
24 Because they had not executed my
judgments, but had despised my statutes, and
had polluted my sabbaths, and their eyes were
after their fathers' idols.
25 Wherefore I gave them also statutes that
were not good, and judgments whereby they
should not live;
(Continued)
32
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS26 And I polluted them in their own gifts, in that
they caused to pass through the fire all that
openeth the womb, that I might make them
desolate, to the end that they might know that I
am the Lord.
27 Therefore, son of man, speak unto the
house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith
the Lord God; Yet in this your fathers have
blasphemed me, in that they have committed a
trespass against me.
(Continued)
33
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS28 For when I had brought them into the land,
for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to
them, then they saw every high hill, and all the
thick trees, and they offered there their
sacrifices, and there they presented the
provocation of their offering: there also they
made their sweet savour, and poured out there
their drink offerings.
29 Then I said unto them, What is the high
place whereunto ye go? And the name thereof
is called Bamah unto this day.
(Continued)
34
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS30 Wherefore say unto the house of Israel,
Thus saith the Lord God; Are ye polluted after
the manner of your fathers? and commit ye
whoredom after their abominations?
31 For when ye offer your gifts, when ye make
your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute
yourselves with all your idols, even unto this
day: and shall I be inquired of by you, O house
of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not
be inquired of by you.
(Continued)
35
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS32 And that which cometh into your mind shall
not be at all, that ye say, We will be as the
heathen, as the families of the countries, to
serve wood and stone.
33 As I live, saith the Lord God, surely with a
mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and
with fury poured out, will I rule over you:
34 And I will bring you out from the people, and
will gather you out of the countries wherein ye
are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a
stretched out arm, and with fury poured out.
(Continued)
36
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS35 And I will bring you into the wilderness of
the people, and there will I plead with you face
to face.
36 Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the
wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead
with you, saith the Lord God.
37 And I will cause you to pass under the rod,
and I will bring you into the bond of the
covenant:
(Continued)
37
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS38 And I will purge out from among you the
rebels, and them that transgress against me: I
will bring them forth out of the country where
they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the
land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the
Lord.
38
PARABLE OF THE TEN VIRGINS
This judgment of Israel is similar to the
judgment of the Gentiles known as the
judgment of the sheep and the goats later in
this chapter.
39
THE PARABLE
OF THE
TALENTS
40
PARABLE OF THE TALENTSMatt 25:14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a
man travelling into a far country, who called his
own servants, and delivered unto them his
goods.
15 And unto one he gave five talents, to
another two, and to another one; to every man
according to his several ability; and
straightway took his journey.
16 Then he that had received the five talents
went and traded with the same, and made them
other five talents.
(Continued)
41
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS17 And likewise he that had received two, he
also gained other two.
18 But he that had received one went and
digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money.
19 After a long time the lord of those servants
cometh, and reckoneth with them.
20 And so he that had received five talents
came and brought other five talents, saying,
Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents:
behold, I have gained beside them five talents
more.
(Continued)
42
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good
and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful
over a few things, I will make thee ruler over
many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
22 He also that had received two talents came
and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two
talents: behold, I have gained two other talents
beside them.
23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and
faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a
few things, I will make thee ruler over many
things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.(Cont)
43
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS24 Then he which had received the one talent
came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art
an hard man, reaping where thou hast not
sown, and gathering where thou hast not
strawed:
25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent
in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou
wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that
I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I
have not strawed:
(Continued)
44
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my
money to the exchangers, and then at my
coming I should have received mine own with
usury.
28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give
it unto him which hath ten talents.
29 For unto every one that hath shall be given,
and he shall have abundance: but from him
that hath not shall be taken away even that
which he hath.
(Continued)
45
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into
outer darkness: there shall be weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
The master did not make it a hard thing.
He gave them responsibilities according
to their own ability.
The talents represented sums of money.
The idea is that whatever God provides
we should use for His glory.
46
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS The master held them accountable for
what they were responsible for.
What have we done for the Lord with what
He has allowed us?
How faithful have we been.
Some of us may have a very small
ministry, but it is what we have done with
it that we will have to give an account.
God expects us to be faithful with what we
are given, nothing more.
47
PARABLE OF THE TALENTS According to John Walvoord:
What the unprofitable servant displayed,
however, was lack of faith in his master and
a desire to have his master’s money
illegally.
The point is that those who reject the truth
of the return of the Lord are, in effect,
nullifying the fact of His first coming, as
acceptance of one should lead to
acceptance of the other….
48
PARABLE OF THE TALENTSIf Jesus is indeed the Son of God, then His
coming again is both reasonable and
expected. If He is not the Son of God, of
course, He would not return. Accordingly, a
lack of faith in the Second Coming stems
from lack of faith in the First Coming. The
one-talent man indicated outward profession
of service to his master but without real
faith.
49
THE
JUDGMENT
OF THE
NATIONS
50
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONSMatt 25:31 When the Son of man shall come
in his glory, and all the holy angels with him,
then shall he sit upon the throne of his
glory:
32 And before him shall be gathered all
nations: and he shall separate them one
from another, as a shepherd divideth his
sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right
hand, but the goats on the left.
(Continued)
51
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS34 Then shall the King say unto them on his
right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from
the foundation of the world:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me
meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I
was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and
ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came
unto me.
(Continued)
52
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS37 Then shall the righteous answer him,
saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred,
and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee
drink?
38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took
thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison,
and came unto thee?
(Continued)
53
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS40 And the King shall answer and say unto
them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye
have done it unto one of the least of these
my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the
left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into
everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and
his angels:
(Continued)
54
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no
meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in:
naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in
prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying,
Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or
athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in
prison, and did not minister unto thee?
(Continued)
55
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily
I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to
one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting
punishment: but the righteous into life
eternal.
56
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS The key to understanding what’s going on
here is to understand a few key words.
The “Son of Man” is Jesus who has
returned in His Second Coming after the
Time of Jacob’s Trouble (7-year
Tribulation).
He will gather the nations together in
judgment.
This is about who of the Gentiles will
enter the Millennial Kingdom.
57
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS These are the Gentile nations.
The Gentiles are either the sheep or the
goats while the brethren of Christ are the
Jews.
He is judging them according to how they
treated His messengers, His “brethren”
(The Jews).
There are 144,000 Jews that are sealed as
Christ’s messengers in Revelation chapter
7.
58
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS Some nations will reject Christ and will
mistreat His messengers.
These nations will be judged on the basis
of their acceptance or rejection of Jesus
Christ through the preaching of these
messengers.
The judgment of these nations will
determine who will enter the Millennial
Kingdom (the 1,000 year reign of Christ).
59
JUDGMENT OF THE NATIONS As mentioned before, this judgment of the
Gentile nations is similar to the judgment
of Israel in Ezekiel 20:33-38.
This judgment of nations contradicts the
Post-Trib view of the Rapture in that if the
Rapture happens at the same time as the
Second Coming then no judgment of
sheep and goats would be necessary–
they would naturally have already been
separated.
60
THINGS TO
COME
61
THINGS TO COME The next lesson will begin in Revelation
1:1.
The Book of Revelation is about things
that will shortly come to pass and is the
testimony of Jesus Christ.
62
THINGS TO COMERev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ,
which God gave unto him, to shew unto his
servants things which must shortly come to
pass; and he sent and signified it by his
angel unto his servant John:
2 Who bare record of the word of God, and
of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all
things that he saw.
(Continued)
63
THINGS TO COME3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that
hear the words of this prophecy, and keep
those things which are written therein: for
the time is at hand.
