    The Story Of Blackpool

    Blackpool changed as decades passed slowly as it follows the Butler Model

    Perfectly. Blackpool was first mentioned in the register of Bispham ParishChurch, where a child was baptized by the sea. It is situated on the coast ofthe Irish Sea in Lancashire. Its population is 142,900 making it the fourth mostdensely populated district in England.

    Exploration

    In 1720 the only visitors of Blackpool were the rich (mostly, gentlemen whoowned large companies and didnt need to work). They would sun bathe andhave a dip in the sea the whole day until they had to return to their estates.

    Edward Whiteside was the first person to build a guesthouse at 1735, whichthen attracted even more tourists. Four hotels were then built in 1780; the onethat attracted most of the tourists was Baileys hotel, it was preferred by therich as its reputation was great. There was a great increase of tourists after

    there hotels were built.

    Involvement

    In 1781 Thomas Clifton and Sir Henry Houghton built the 1stprivate road intoBlackpool. This allowed people from the others towns of northern England to

    arrive to Blackpool. However it took a day to reach Blackpool from Manchesterand two days from Yorkshire as there were only horse powered coaches.

    At 1840, the first railway in the area was built, but it was only built for nearbyareas, where others who wanted to visit had to transport themselves in awagon. The railway line then extended throughout the years.

    Development

    A path was built along the sea front during the years 1855-1870.At 1863, the North Pier opened and locals built facilities such as the TheatreRoyal. In 1870, Central pier opened and so was the south a few years later,where they linked different areas of Blackpool together.

    Consolidation

    Lots of attractions were built in 1872; there was a lake, a racecourse, footballand cricket grounds, skating rinks, a monkey house, a ballroom and a theatre,

    which then attracted 850,000 tourists. There was a lack of transport systemsat that time so the council built a tramway along the seafront. Blackpool towerwas finally built during 1891-1894, which had a circus and a ballroom on thetop. During years 1923 to 1930, the first carnival at Blackpool took place andthe beach was also modernized by the local govermnent. At 1931, BlackpoolReceived 3,850,000 visitors! A new opera house then opened which wasBritains largest cinema and theatre at that time.

    Stagnation

    Blackpool Zoo opened in 1972. In 1975 two motorways were open, whichmade it easier to reach Blackpool by road. Also, a car park was built at theend of the motorway which could accommodate 6,000 car There are now 3railway stations in Blackpool.

    Decline

    In 1987, Visitor nights declined from 16m to 10.5m and hotels only had aquarter of their rooms filled annually. Then in 1990 Blackpool sea life centreopened to try and rejuvenate the town.

    Rejuvenation

    In 2003 a rejuvenation project started, which create a lot of jobs. It increased

    then numbers of tourists in 2004 to 11,000,000. In 2005, a widened road andnew parking facilities are built.
