he’s already done, it’s no longer possible to let fear and worry get the best of me. In prayer, worry is smothered with gratitude.

So when Jesus says, “Don’t worry,” he means it. It’s a commandment, and worry is a sin. But you don’t have to give your mind over to it. Learn how to pray. Learn how to let Jesus take care of you—after all, that’s his job. When you finally learn to trust him, your worries will disappear.

See you Sunday!

GRIEF AND THE HOLIDAYS

If you are grieving the death of a loved one, the sights and sounds of the holidays can be in sharp contrast to your own personal experiences of grief. In order to help you cope with and manage grief dur-ing the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday period, Woodburn Baptist Church will be offering two ses-sions of grief education and support --- November 5

th and 19

th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Room 13. Any-

one you know who might benefit from this oppor-tunity to be with others who are grieving and to plan ahead for these important, but difficult months, is welcome.

For more information, contact Wanda Dobbins, [email protected], 270-234-3514.

Sisters and Brothers,

When it comes to worry, Jesus has just one word: Don’t.

Jesus wouldn’t ask us to do what we can’t do. He doesn’t ask us to dance like Beyonce, to throw a football like Tom Brady—Jesus knows what we can and can’t do. And he knows that we can choose to live without worry.

For some of us, worry is natural, habitual. We’re experts at imagining the worst case. We worry so much that we’re hardly even aware of it; therefore, when we try not to worry, it only makes us notice how much of our thinking is actually taken over by worry. That’s why we can’t stop worrying by simply trying not to worry. We have to shift our focus. We have to put all that anxious energy into something else. According to Paul, the way to break free from the habit of worry is to replace it with a new, healthy habit: prayer.

Take a look at what Paul says in the fourth chapter of Phi-lippians. In verse 4 he starts by saying, “Always be full of joy in the Lord.” Finding joy in the Lord is the first step away from worrying. Truly, joy isn’t always found in my circumstances, because they are always changing and un-certain. But I can always find gladness in the Lord, because he doesn’t change. That’s why, when I am “in the Lord,” I can always be full of joy. What is more, Paul’s instruction takes advantage of a basic principle: I can’t worry in the Lord. It’s impossible. In Christ, we have confidence and courage, faith and hope. In his presence, my worries van-ish. That’s why the habit of worrying reflects a spiritual problem; it’s a bad sign for my faith. The closer I get to Christ’s perfect love, the further I get from your fears.

But that’s not all. In Philippians 4:6, Paul goes on to say, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about every-thing.” You don’t simply stop worrying—you replace the negative habit with the healthy behavior. Turn all your worries into prayer. Many of us worry about everything. Interestingly, we’re told never to worry and always to pray. The two practices are indeed similar but opposite. In fact it’s been said that worry is actually praying to yourself for things you don’t want—how insane is that?! We can worry without ceasing, but we can’t even imagine what it would be like to pray without ceasing.

Paul says, simply “tell God what you need.” Tell him. It’s the beginning of prayer. Of course he already knows what you need better that you do. If I pray for this, but what I need is that, God will give me that. In other words, his care for me is based on his perfect wisdom and not my imper-fect praying. That’s why I’m never told to pray with knowledge; I’m told to pray with thanksgiving. Again, Paul says, “Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Maybe that’s the worst part of what worry does—it makes me forget all that God has already done for me. If I pray, however, remembering the way God al-ways blesses and provides for me, thanking him for what

Deacon Details

The deacon body is currently working to find a strategy to meet your family’s needs on a consistent basis. Presently, the primary means is through the deacon of the week, con-tacting us through email, [email protected], or calling the church office. Jack Wright, Brandon Harris, and Joe Cox have been elected by the deacons to serve as Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Secretary respectively. Ken-ton Powell will be leading a group planning and imple-menting special services planned for April and October of 2018.

We recently asked specifically for:

Your prayer support as we work to address the minis-try needs of our congregation.

Your input into how to best address the ministry needs of our congregation.

As so very many of you already do, we need your assis-tance in meeting the ministry needs of our con-gregation.

As the body of Christ, we want to ensure that our church continues to be a place where everyday people find their everyday needs met - every day. That’s what our Deacon Body is striving to do. Thanks to all who have made sugges-tions for how to update the deacon family ministry plan at Woodburn Baptist Church (WBC). We are currently evalu-ating a couple different suggestions with the objective of launching an updated plan for deacon ministry on or be-fore January 2018. If you would like to be a part of the re-view process, please be in touch.

Finally, John Sheehan is leading an effort to provide infor-mation for all deacons/yokefellows who are serving at WBC.

In Christ,

Giving Thanks

You may remember me saying before that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday after Easter. I like it more than Christmas. I like everything about the holiday. The food is good, inviting friends to join us is great and enjoying the work that goes into all of that. My only regret is that all of my family is usually not together since we are all so spread apart by distance these days. The best part of the Thanksgiving season for me is the focus on being thankful. It is sometimes hard to be thankful though because there is so much to crowd thankfulness out of our lives. The pres-sures of everyday living tend to lead us toward complaining and focusing on self rather than be-ing thankful. For example, my daughter Emily re-cently had an accident which caused me to have to do some extra things in handling the resultant details. In the midst of my frustration, I felt the Spirit remind me to be thankful. I was thankful that Emily or no one else was hurt. Thankful that she had a truck to worry about even though it was now damaged. I was thankful that we had insur-ance to cover the expenses of her care. I learned from that situation that I can always be thankful even when things don’t always go the way I wished they would. So I guess that is why I enjoy Thanksgiving. This season of the year reminds us to be thankful which I will try to do all year long. I hope you have a great Thanksgiving! 1 Thessalo-nians 5:18 “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Je-sus.” Serving Together, Warren Weeks

Why is it that the older we become the more challenging it is to have confidence in things, people, and even our-selves? What causes us to lose trust in people we once looked up to and admired? How does a tiny seed of doubt eventually growi into an immovable boulder blocking our entire pathway?

It is a lack of faith.

But what is faith? Hebrews 11:1 in the International Children’s Bible translation states, “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for. And faith means knowing that something is real even if we do not see it.” When I talk to other parents about topics they are dealing with at home the one thing I hear the most from them is, “We just didn’t have to deal with these types of issues when I was a kid.” I fully agree with this statement. Things that I encountered in my childhood are different than the things my children are, and will face, as my childhood was also different than that of my parents or grandparents. The things that have re-mained the same though are sin and the temptation to sin. A growing, faith based relationship with God is what can help us and our children determine how they will react in different situations that arise during their childhood, youth, and adult life.

It sounds really simple to say a faith based rela-tionship will help. I realize fully the simplicity of that state-ment and the incredible challenge of what it means to grasp that as reality. I have struggled with faith my entire life. As a child, faith equaled rules and judgment. In my preteen and early teen years faith equaled knowledge. After accepting Christ while in high school and in college faith became more about grace. As an adult faith has been more about learning and obedience. Faith is a word I grew up with, have used, and have tried to fully understand. At this point in my life I feel faith is something that has to develop overtime and evolves as we respond to Christ.

At Tune In Weekend this year we will look more deeply at how faith evolves and changes as we evaluate and respond to what God is doing in our lives. We will be dis-cussing these three topics related to faith:

Faith is personal. Faith has to be owned by the individu-al, not borrowed from someone else.

Faith is active. Faith causes us to explore and take our next step.

Faith is obedient. Faith calls us to step out when we don’t know the end result.

Please pray for those that will participate in Tune In Weekend this year – the students (who have requested we talk about this topic), the leaders who will serve, the band that will help our kids connect to God, and our speaker who will teach. I am excited to see how God is going to show up and how everyone will respond to Him.

Prepositions are mighty big, little words. In just 2 or 3

letters, they can change the meaning of a sentence. Or a

paragraph. Or a whole conversation.

If you’re a sports fan, you’d much prefer your team be in

the championship game than at the championship game.

How much more for those on the team!

If you’re in love with the guy you hope will pop the ques-

tion, you’d rather hear “You’re the one for me” than

“You’re the one with me.”

Powerful prepositions.

These mighty little words can help us understand how we

worship, too.

TO — Who are you singing to? There are two primary

options: you’re singing to God or to each other. Which

way does the text go? Are the words directed to God?

(How Great Thou Art; Great Is Thy Faithfulness; I Love

You Lord; Open Up the Heavens) Or are the lyrics

directed to one another? (To God Be the Glory; Blessed

Assurance; In Christ Alone; No Longer Slaves)

This little word (to) determines where our eyes focus.

Are they looking to the heavens, where Jesus is seated at

the right hand of the Father? Or are they catching the

eyes of those around us, encouraging… spurring one an-

other on?

FOR — Closely related, and a place I have much sin to

confess… Who are you singing for? When I first

discovered I could sing well—back in high school—I

would sing for the people around me. Always and only. I

would do my best to demonstrate to everyone within a

few seats of me just how talented I was. I was singing for

the praise of those around me. I was, perhaps more

accurately, singing to others for my own gain. These days

I try to sing for the edification—the building up—of those

gathered to worship. And, on the days I get it right, only

for the glory of God.

WITH — Who are you singing with? This is one of the

reasons I love being part of our church. There is a beau-

tiful, powerful, Biblical emphasis on being together…

being family… being the Body of Christ. We often think

of this when we serve alongside each other outside of

the worship gathering. But when we meet with God,

we are still the Body. We need each other. (“The eye

can’t say to the foot, ‘I don’t need you.’” - 1 Cor 12)

Plural pronouns in our lyrics remind us of this. I don’t

sing in a box all by myself, or even with other people in

boxes. We are joined. We worship together. (O God

Our Help in Ages Past; Everlasting God; How Great Is

Our God; We Will Remember)

OVER — Who are you singing over? Perhaps this is a

new one for you. But when you lift your voice, there is

a benefit for those around you. I don’t mean that they

hear how well you sing (or grimace when you miss a

note). I mean something happens when praise leaves

your lips… when worship goes beyond your personal

space. It blesses others. I suspect you know this is true

because you’ve been on the receiving end. Someone

near you, perhaps behind you, has sung their joy and it

lifted your sad soul. Or someone has lifted their hands

in praise and it straightened your slumped shoulders.

There are times your singing ministers to those who are

too broken to sing on their own. When you can’t lift

your voice because of your hurt, your brokenness, even

your sin, we want to sing for you.

OVER, part 2 — This is my favorite. Who is singing over

you? God! While I’ve known this for decades and have

had the honor of teaching this from pulpits for years,

the words of Zephaniah 3:17 never grow old:

"The Lord your God is living among you.

He is a mighty savior.

He will take delight in you with gladness.

With His love, he will calm all your fears.

He will rejoice over you with joyful songs."

Can’t wait to sing with you on Sunday!

Grace. Peace.

I can’t believe it’s almost been two months! Time has flown by, but my family and I are loving every minute of it! We have loved getting to know many of you and look forward to getting to know even more of you as the weeks go on. I wanted to thank you all again for taking the time to introduce yourselves (and reintroduce yourselves!) to us as we begin to learn all the many names and faces of Woodburn Baptist. You have all been so gracious and generous to us over the past several weeks.

This whole process made me stop and think. It’s so easy to get “comfortable” in a church the size of Woodburn. Some-one is always stepping up to take care of a need or to take on leadership roles. It can be so easy to just think, “I’ll just let them do it,” or “they don’t need me,” or even “I can’t do that.” God has used many of you to step up and make my family and I feel welcomed. You didn’t wait for someone else to do it, and it made all the difference.

You see, we sometimes forget the power of “one.” One introduction can make someone feel at ease. One word of encouragement can lift someone’s entire day, or even week. One prayer can change someone’s life. One great example can inspire a whole church. One act can truly make the differ-ence.

All of these things start with one person, taking one step. There is power in “one.” Satan does his best to defeat us, but we know that he has no power over us. Luke 10:19 tells us God has given us power over the enemy and that nothing will harm us. Satan has no power over us. The most powerful weapon he has is deception. He lies to us and tells us we can’t do something or we aren’t good enough. He tells us we can’t make a difference anyway, so why try. He tells us we don’t know enough about the Bible to talk to someone about Jesus.

Satan’s greatest trick is to get God’s children to do nothing. So, remember how powerful you truly are. The same power that rose Jesus from the dead now resides in you! One per-son, with one act, can change someone’s life forever. Be “one” who will make a difference in this church and in this world. One person can truly make a difference, no matter how big or small, as long as we act in obedience to God’s di-rection.
