The Star A Catholic School committed to the Lasallian Vision of Education TERM 2 WEEK 8 23 JUNE 2017 ISSUE 19 / 17 Dear St Michael’s Community, On Friday morning I will be leaving to undertake the third and final year of Lasallian studies, through the Buttimer Institute, in New York. This is an intensive Lasallian education and formation program with participation from approximately 100 Lasallian partners, including Principals, from across our world-wide network. During my absence, Teresa Cimmino will undertake the Acting Principal role and Bronwynn Kemp will be Acting Deputy Principal, Learning and Teaching Excellence. I wish all staff, students and families a successful end to the semester and a restful upcoming break. It is certainly well-deserved! John Foley, Principal SEMESTER 1 As Semester 1 draws to a close, it is important that we remember that learning programs and activities are still on-going for most students. R-10 programs continue through to the end of term, while the Year 11 students move into exam mode next week. Year 11 exams are held in Weeks 9 and 10. These exams are an excellent opportunity for students to both test their learning from Semester 1 and to gain valuable insights about their strengths and challenges under exam conditions. Year 12 learning programs also continue, aside from the Research Project. This subject, compulsory for the successful completion of SACE, is in its final week and the results are being submitted to the SACE Board. We wish the students well and trust that all the learning, application, and hard work comes to fruition. The coming term break is a great opportunity for Year 12 students to have a rest from the day to day demands of classes, but also a time to consolidate their learning as they prepare for the Mid-Year Exams (Week 1, Term 3), and then move into what essentially will be their last term of school. This time of the year is also when students will begin the process of selecting subjects and learning pathways for 2018 and beyond. Year 10 and Year 11 students will have their “Future Pathways” and “Subject Expo” during the next two weeks, with Years 8 and 9 having similar opportunities next term. Subject Selection information will also be provided for parents, as the partnership of school, students and parents is essential to gaining the best possible outcomes. More information will follow and we look forward to working with you through the process. We also wish our Year 6 and 7 staff and students all the best for a successful trip to the nation’s capital in week 10. CAD/RAD On Wednesday and Thursday of this week the entire Year 10 cohort was engaged in the annual CAD/RAD program. CAD, or Community Awareness Day, is designed to give our students a practical insight into the works of a number of Adelaide Charities. RAD, or Reflection Activity Day, challenges students to reflect on their relationships, their priorities and the direction of their lives as they enter their senior years of schooling. These two days are an integral part of the Year 10 program and parents of these students are encouraged to discuss the days with their sons and daughters. We look forward to reading reflections from the students in next week’s Star. We greatly appreciate all of the organisations who opened their doors to us and to the presenters who were, through their sharing and personal stories, able to provide insights not always available to our students. Dear St Michael’s Community, On Friday morning I will be leaving to undertake the third and final year of Lasallian studies, through the Buttimer Institute, in New York. This is an intensive Lasallian education and formation program with participation from approximately 100 Lasallian partners, including Principals, from across our world-wide network. I wish all staff, students and families a successful end to the semester and a restful upcoming break. It is certainly well-deserved!

SEMESTER 1 As Semester 1 draws to a close, it is important that we remember that learning programs and activities are still on-going for most students. PRIMARY CAMPUS

MASS Parents are invited to attend Mass, which is celebrated on Thursdays at 9:00am in the Beverley Chapel.

FAMILY MASS Please note the Family Mass on Sunday 25 June at 9:00am in the Beverley Chapel. An invitation is extended to all SMC families.

PRIMARY EMAIL ADDRESS Parents are advised that if they wish to communicate directly with the Primary Campus the following address is available: [email protected]. All communication is handled in a confidential manner.

PARKING Please be mindful that child safety is paramount and takes priority over the inconvenience of not having access to a park. As the weather turns inclement, the need for greater attentiveness to safe road habits increases. Please consider timing pick up for perhaps 5 minutes later as you would be surprised at the ease of accessibility. Conversely, when weather is particularly inclement you can collect your son from 3:10pm in person, this is to support those parents/caregivers who park and walk. Please do not park in the PickUp Zone and leave your vehicle unattended.

Mr Kym Clark, Director of Lasallian Mission

REFUGEE WEEK POSTER AWARD Congratulations to the seven Year 6 SMC students that have had their artwork selected for the Refugee Week Poster Award Exhibition opening this week. They are Heath Conlon-Brown, Luc Waye, Patrick Pllumbi, Joseph Del Giglio, Jackson Whote, Joshua Stephens and Beacher Ross. Five of the Year 6 students attended the Refugee Week Poster Awards on Monday with Art Teacher Kate Tyrwhitt. The building was packed and there were some powerful stories shared before the Education Minister announced the winners and runners-up. While no St Michael's College entries were the winning entries, we were the only school that had more than one poster selected, infact four separate posters from the Year 6 cohort were selected which is quite an achievement. Well done boys and to Kate Tyrwhitt, their art teacher.

AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA

Tuesday 24 May was Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Both Year 7 classes were asked to make and bring to school 6-12 homemade cupcakes. Lucky for me my mum loves to make and decorate cupcakes! Together we decorated 12 amazing Artisan

cupcakes. I helped by making the edible lego pieces, rolling the fondant balls for the caterpillars and piping the grass. We made smiling faces, ladybugs, lego, colourful caterpillars and a special St Michael’s cupcake which I sold to Mr Clark. Between both classes over 200 cupcakes were brought to school and were sold to the students and teachers. These cupcakes were sold to raise money for Cancer Council SA. The wonderful cupcakes made by the students of Years 7 were sold for $2 and $1, my cupcakes were sold to the teachers for $5. A BIG, BIG thank you to Ms Gaffney who purchased one lego cupcake for $50. All together we raised $906. A Great EFFORT by all students. Raising money for Cancer Research means a lot to my mum and me as 20 years ago my mum lost her brother Con, aged 27 to cancer. I never got to meet him and that makes her very sad. Many people are affected by cancer every year and we need to help raise money for more research to find a cure. Thank you to everyone who brought in cupcakes and also to everyone who purchased a cake. I am sure that together we can all make a big difference.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY Our 12 Youth Environmental Leaders YELs were very privileged to attend this year's World Environment Day (WED) event held at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens on Tuesday 6 June. Each year WED is hosted to encourage young South Australians to engage with the environment and issues currently impacting the globe. It also enables students to connect lessons taught in schools with real world issues, solutions and practices. Along with 3,000 other students, the YELs participated in a range of engaging and interactive presentations with key messages about the environment. They left the day inspired with many ideas on how they could improve not only the environment at school, but also in their own homes. Here's what the YELs had to say about the event:

"I have never felt so inspired and motivated in my life." Rocco "I learnt about how to test the water to see if it is clean or dirty. I also learnt how to identify all the different water bugs and I discovered a very sensitive water bug in the wetlands which is a sign that the water is clean." Jake “My favourite part of today was the chicken activity at the end. I am thinking about ideas for a chicken coop already. My mind is going crazy." Sam

The favourite activity of the day was definitely the ‘Chicken Workshop’. Looks like a chicken coop next to Chol's Garden might be on the agenda! Well done to the boys for their dedication and enthusiasm.

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COMPETITION The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) is once again conducting Assessment of Languages Competence (ALC) tests in Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and Spanish to celebrate students’ achievements in learning languages throughout Australia, New Zealand and the SE Asia Pacific. Testing will be completed online in August and will take approximately one hour to complete. It comprises of two multiple-choice sections (Listening and Reading) and students have the option of competing at different levels based on how long they have been learning the language. Although the cost of entering the competition is usually $10.00, the College is covering the cost of entry fees for up to 24 students this year. Places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Sample materials are available on the ACER website: https://www.acer.org/alc/sample-material. Interested students are asked to see their Italian teacher for a registration form and ensure it is returned by the end of Week 10 to secure their place in the competition.

LANGUAGES AND THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE The Australian Defence Force pays a Language Allowance to encourage and assist members to maintain proficiency in an approved foreign language and for the performance of linguistic duties. The allowance ranges from $1,110 to $11,101 per year depending on the language and the level of proficiency. More information is available at http://www.defence.gov.au/PayAndConditions/ADF/Chapter-4/Part-3/Div-1.asp. Languages not offered at SMC can be studied externally through the School of Languages and still count towards SACE. For more details visit http://schooloflanguages.sa.edu.au/languages.htm.

SCHOLARSHIPS TO USA Following on from the recent talk to families interested in applying for Sports Scholarships to the USA, Samantha Jackson from the American Consulate has sent some Facebook links for more information. See: www.fb.me/EducationUSAAustralia and go to the tab Videos titled 23 March. The longest video is addressing the Undergraduate studies information that is address in the first 1 hour of the session and the shorter video addresses Sports Scholarship information. The direct link to the TAB is: https://business.facebook.com/pg/EducationUSAAustralia/videos/?ref=page_internal. The most important thing we took from the talk was the need to ensure School Subjects from Year 9 onwards meet the core requirements of the NCAA. These may vary from American Div 1 College to College and vary based on the strength of a Scholarship offering but one of the keys is to ensure a whole year of language at Year 9 level.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION GRADUATES VERSUS UNIVERSITY GRADUATES STARTING SALARIES McCrindle Research have recently completed a Research paper on VET Perceptions are Not Reality. This report gives an overview of the trends currently impacting the Australian workforce and outlines responses that will help futureproof the local economy amidst these global megatrends. The transition of the workforce from the currently dominant Baby Boomers and Generation X to Generations Y and Z will require different and more diverse solutions to previous intergenerational transfers. As this report points out, the need to be innovative, collaborative and responsive, require more emphasis on vocational education and training (VET) in addition to our well-regarded higher education sector. In a multi career era, it is upskilling and retraining that will create a nimble and relevant workforce. In this technologically transformative society, today’s new workers will have to be lifelong learners, with hands-on skills not just academic qualifications, and a focus on productivity not just theory. In these economically fluctuating times, tertiary education will increasingly be required to deliver a return on investment, direct employment outcomes and strong career earning. In all of these areas, the VET sector offers compelling solutions to these emerging needs. This report clearly shows the key role of the VET sector in these transformed times. It also highlights the need to prioritise, promote and position the sector to respond competently to the current needs and opportunities of the Australian economy. The VET sector is more than just a partner in equipping the emerging workforce; it is the first foundational rung in Australia’s future economic prosperity.
