Clippers dangled from the wooden fence next to the roses — an invitation

to passersby to take some flowers with them. Leo Samuel, the

homeowner, wanted everyone to enjoy the roses he grew. It’s why he cultivated

them next to his sidewalk.

Soon, neighbors followed his example, growing their roses, not in

backyards, but where pedestrians could appreciate them and snip a few. The

welcoming idea spread across the block and eventually across the city.

Some say it was Leo who earned Portland its nickname: The Rose City. And yes, Portlanders still like to plant

their roses by the sidewalks.

1906 Oregon Life Insurance Company

Leo Samuel and his associates began competing against Eastern insurance giants with Oregon Life Insurance Company. Seeing an opportunity to build the local economy and his neighbors’ financial security, Samuel shaped a company dedicated to financial strength, excellence and growth.

1929 Oregon Mutual Life Insurance Company

With a name change and some reorganization, Oregon Mutual Life Insurance Company became the first mutual insurance company in the Northwest. In the early 1930s, the company began enhancing policyowners’ financial security by offering a guaranteed income for life with immediate annuities. The company’s continued financial strength and solid asset management allowed the annuity line to play a prominent role in growth and expansion through the years.

1946 Standard Insurance Company

As operations continued to expand nationally, the company changed its name to Standard Insurance Company. Growth continued through these decades with the introduction of new products and the entrance into new markets. Changes over these years never lost sight of the company’s commitment to quality service and financial strength.

1999 StanCorp Financial Group, Inc.

StanCorp Financial Group, Inc. was formed as parent to Standard Insurance Company and several other financial subsidiaries, changing from a mutual life insurance company to a publicly traded company. This parent company is now listed and traded under the

ticker symbol “SFG” on the New York Stock Exchange. Since going public, the company has seen stable growth and continued annuity sales.

Now The Standard

The Standard is known for conducting business with expertise, commitment, integrity and an unwavering focus on service. Entering its second century, this remains our commitment to all customers. The Standard continues working to earn your trust every day.
