The Spirit of Christ

Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11; Acts 16:7; Philippians 1:19

Trinitarian Fellowship

1. The fulnes of the Godhead, bodily

For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. (Colossians 2:9KJV)

• To see the Lord was to see the Father; to know the Lord was to know the Father (John 14:9).• To see the Lord was to see the Holy Spirit; to know the Lord was to know the Holy Spirit (John 14:17).• Jesus was in perfect fellowship with the Heavenly Father - a perfect reflection of His glory in all that

He was and all that He did (2 Corinthians 4:6; John 1:14).• Jesus was fully strengthened and indwelt by the Holy Spirit in an unquenched, unmeasured and

unfettered way.

2. Sending another Helper

• Jesus is anxious to tell them that if He goes away, the Holy Spirit will come and that this is the best outcome for them (John 16:6-7).

• He intends to send them the Spirit who has been with them through Him to dwell in them as He dwelt in Him (John 14:17).

• By the giving of the Spirit, the Father is glorified in us also (as He was in Christ - Rom 8:15), we belong to Christ (Romans 8:9), and we receive the same Spirit who ministered to the Lord Jesus.

The Spirit in Christ

1. Emphasising His humanity

• The reality of the humanity of Christ is as important as the reality of His deity (Hebrews 2:14).• To redeem mankind, He had to accomplish the redemptive work as a man (Hebrews 2:10). He won

the redemptive conquests as a real man in concert with the Spirit of God.• The scriptures constantly note the wonder of His humanity (Philippians 2:6-8; Genesis 3:15; Daniel

7:13; 1 Timothy 2:15).• Christ’s genuine humanity make His work all the more astonishing.

2. General principles

• God the Father worked in the life of Jesus through the companionship of the Holy Spirit.• That the Father worked in Him was Jesus’ constant testimony, concerning His works, His words, His

mission, His character - He ascribed them all back to the work of the Father.• That the Holy Spirit empowered Him is essential because to use His divine prerogatives with respect

to the works of redemption would have disqualified Him from being a real man to redeem mankind.

3. His conception

And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.’(Luke 1:35)

• The Holy Spirit brings the divine and the human together through His creative power over the seed of the woman.

• The Father is working in Him by the activity of the Holy Spirit right from the beginning.• The pattern for the manner of working of the Godhead is stamped from this point - the architecture of

the Father, the presence of the Spirit who brings power.

4. His childhood growth & maturity

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and man.(Luke 2:52)

• He grows in the Spirit of wisdom, counsel and understanding (cf Isaiah 11:2)After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. (Luke 2:46-47)

• He grows in the fear of the Lord by the power of the Spirit (cf Isaiah 11:3)And he said to them, ‘Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?’ (Luke 2:49)

5. His baptism & temptation

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was pray-ing, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.’(Luke 3:21-22)

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.(Luke 4:1-2)

• The significance of Jesus’ temptation lies in the need to undo Adam’s fall in the face of temptation.• Jesus becomes the leader of a new human family, as one who conquered and stood where Adam was

defeated and fell (see generally Hebrews 2).• As a pivotal moment in redemption, the Holy Spirit is present giving Jesus strength.

6. His ministry

And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out

through all the surrounding country. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isai-ah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’

And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’ (Luke 4:14-21)

The Same Spirit

1. For us

• There is only one Spirit, so the Spirit we receive is the Spirit of Christ (confirm Romans 8:9)

2. Seeing the Face of God

• The role of the Spirit in me is to create in me all of those qualities that will be fully and finally realised when I see the face of God (1 John 3:2-3) (refer previous study).

• This is a transforming process which comes from the Lord and the Spirit (His Spirit, the Spirit of Christ)

We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

3. Christ’s example

• In His maturity, we see the Spirit’s ability to work in us and to produce wisdom and understanding.• In His temptation, we see the Spirit’s ability to work in us to subdue the Devil and overcome

temptation/sin.• In His ministry we see the Spirit’s constant ability to glorify God in us and to shine Him forth.

3. In summary

• To see the Holy Spirit at work in Christ is to see God at work in Him by the power and companionship of the Holy Spirit.

Page 5: The Spirit of Christ - Bible Class Study Guide

• To have the same Spirit in me is to have God at work in me, reproducing Christ in me, by the power and companionship of the Holy Spirit.

• The key preventative which quenches the Holy Spirit’s extraordinary power in me is my sinful nature. To deal with sin is to grant the Holy Spirit strength.
