From the Pastor:
A few years back, there was a bumper sticker craze I came across which read: “Perform Random Acts of Kindness”.
I later discovered that this was a Christian movement intended to promote the following of the “Golden Rule” : “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
I recently came across a list of possible suggestions of how you and I could do just that in areas of our everyday lives. You may even come up with a few of your own, but as we start the beginning of this new school
year ahead, I thought I would share with you some of these wonderful suggestions for us all to consider:
- The next toll booth you come to, pay for the car behind you.
- Send a thank you letter to a teacher you once had, letting him or her know the difference he or she made in your life.
- Ask an older person to tell you a story about his or her youth.
- Order a mail order gift anonymously for a friend or co-worker.
- Give another driver your parking spot.
- Invite someone visiting to sit next to you in church.
- Say the words “I love you” to 20 people for whom it’s true.
- Write a note to the owner of a house or garden in the area whose beauty gives you pleasure.
In sharing such random acts of kindness such as these, we can also remember and honor those we lost September 11. And in so doing, we pass on the ministry and love of Christ.
Love & Grace,

Rutherford County Habitat for Humanity has started participating in a program helping senior citizen Habitat home owners age in place. Habitat helps the home owners with repair work the home owner can not do themselves.
On Monday, we worked at a home on Church Street cleaning up the very overgrown yard. We cut down brush, trimmed or pulled out bushes, put down landscape fabric and mulch in the front garden, repaired 2 fence gates, removed and replaced 2 front porch posts, repaired gutters and downspouts, replaced electrical outlet covers, prepared the driveway for and spread the new gravel on the driveway.
The rest of the week we helped prepare a house on East Castle Street for a new homeowner. All the walls needed to be sanded, patched and cleaned to be painted. We painted all the interior walls, doors and trim. The kitchen cabinets and countertops were removed. The fence was stained.
At another house, closet doors were installed and a tree was planted.
On Friday, some of us went to the Habitat Restore to make some DIY projects for the Restore Lounge at the Bonaroo Music Festival. These items will be auctioned off and the proceeds will be returned to Habitat.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL was held from June 23rd-27th. We had a total of 50 children between the age of 3 years old-5th grade. The kids had a fun filled week of arts & crafts, science, drama, bible stories and of course lots of music to show and learn about God’s love for them and everyone else. A successful VBS is greatly in part to our many youth and adult volunteers. A great number of them gave up their week to help the kids spread the good news to: ”Do Good, Seek Peace and Go After It!” Thank you for all your help and commit-ment.
Please consider joining us next year as we go to Mars and Beyond during the week of June 21st-25th.

LAY MEMBER TO ANNUAL CONFERENCE
CONFERENCE REPORT, SPRING 2019
I would like to thank you all for allowing me to represent Hiss at the 235th Baltimore Washington
Annual Conference this year. The Annual Conference is a great opportunity to learn and do more for my
church. The conference this year was a unique experience because I saw how people with very different
and aggressive views come to an agreement to honor Young People’s Ministry day as the allotted time
for the young people only. We even had a session that lasted until 1 a.m. taking care of business so we
can stay on schedule.
In terms of business, the conference went through 19 resolutions and approved multiple budget plans
and discipleship council reports. Bishop La Trelle Easterling and Bishop Moore-Koikoi confirms the
ordination of the new deacons, elders, into the United Methodist Church. There was a memorial service
to honor those we have lost in the past year. The first three days of the annual conference were a
whirlwind of political business, worship services, bible study and delegate nominations, where one of our
very own was elected as an alternate delegate for the Jurisdictional Conference in July.
The final day was for the Young People’s Ministry, where I had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the
Campus Ministry Hub at the University of Maryland. During that session, we had multiple speakers
speaking on their journey in faith, how to connect with the youth in their local churches, introduce new
programs where youth have more say in what happens, and more. The youth took a moment to lay
hands on our Bishop and pray over her, as she humbly accepted and rejoiced at the end.
“ [The young people] are not the church of tomorrow. You are the church of now.”
- Bishop La Trelle Easterling
The 235th Baltimore Washington Annual Conference’s theme was “ We Are One United To Love” and in
today’s world, that needs to be theme in everywhere as we go through a time of change in church. To
my Hiss family, I pass this theme to you as a reminder that we are all God’s people and that we are all
loved. To God be the glory for all that He has done and will continue to do. Thank you.
