The nightly-held joint cultural performances between intellectually disabled artists and top Korean artists during the Special Olympics World Winter Games Pyeongchang in January-February 2013 elevated the Special Olympics into the first-ever cultural Olympics, touching participants as well as people all over the world. The “Special International Music & Art Festival” was consequently newly established to continue the ideals of the Special Olympics. Intensive music lessons and interactions will show musically-talented children with intellectual disabilities from Korea and abroad that by overcoming language barriers, they can dream of “becoming the best.”
Aim
The Festival, as a follow-up to the Special Olympics World Winter Games Pyeongchang 2013, aims to promote interaction in music and improvement in talents of local and foreign intellectually and developmentally disabled artists by hosting the Festival each year in Pyeongchang. The Festival aims to contribute to promoting the spirit of the Special Olympics which fosters the inclusion and acceptance of the intellectually disabled as members of society. To this end, sponsorship and cooperation from not only groups affiliated with the intellectually disabled, but also from all sectors of society including cultural and artistic circles, will be pursued. The Festival will especially support participation of intellectually disabled artists from developing countries, thereby continuing and spreading the spirit of the Special Olympics worldwide.
