FROM THE CHAIR JOEL OTTING CPP
How Important Is Your Career
Do you look at what you are doing right now as a job occupa-
tion or a career You may think ldquoWhat difference does it
makerdquo Hopefully after reading this article you will realize it
makes a lot of difference
A job is simply something you do for pay You
probably have held many jobs already in your lifetime and
may hold more in the future not all of which have anything to
do with your occupation or your career
An occupation is an assembly of jobs with similar
characteristics If you consider security your occupation you
may have held several different jobs but they all related to the
security industry Maybe you have been a uniformed guard
working a post have worked in a security command center
answering alarms and dispatching guards and have worked
executive protection details You will say security is your oc-
cupation
A career paints a picture of your journey through life
All of the skills training and experiences that you have
gleaned from your multiple jobs and occupations are rolled up
into your career Building a career requires making decisions
and choices along the way that will lead you to jobs with pro-
gressively more responsibility and usually better pay Factors
such as family friends education jobs and professional or-
ganizations can all play apart in you having a successful ca-
reer Building a career takes effort
Now do you understand why the question is how im-
portant is your career rather than asking how important is your
job If you consider your role in security as a job or even an
occupation but do not consider it your career then the blunt
fact is that ASIS is not going to benefit you What ASIS offers
its members is the assistance required to make the informed
decisions obtain the critical education and build a network of
security professionals to shape your career
The Phoenix Chapter of ASIS has always put its focus
on assisting the members who have chosen security as their
career and are actively working on advancing that career The
Chapter continues to do this by offering education opportuni-
ties like our annual Southwest Security Conference monthly
meetings with educational speakers webinars and study
classes for ASIS certification testing Networking with other
ASIS members will also benefit your career
A job may be handed to you but it takes a lot of effort
and time to build a successful career If your answer to my
original question is that your career is very important to you
then take the first steps in joining ASIS International and the
Phoenix Chapter After you have done that you have to take the
next steps and USE your membership Become active in the
organization and take advantage of everything it has to offer
Listing membership to an organization on your resume will not
advance your career but listing all of the education and experi-
ence you received from your membership in an organization
will highlight your career advancements In todayrsquos world
unless you consider security as your career you cannot expect
more than a security job
Respectfully
Joel B Otting CPP ASIS Phoenix Chapter Chairman 2016

ANOTHER TRAGIC CHURCH SHOOTING JOHNNIE L MOCK PSP
On Sunday 28 February 2016 Pastor William Schooler 70 was shot and killed in his office at the St Peters Missionary Baptist
Church in Dayton Ohio while the choir was singing at the end of Sunday service His brother Daniel Schooler 68 is accused of the
murder He has a history of mental illness and violence according to both court and police records
Often we imagine that violence against Houses of Worship are directed from outside sources yet a very large number of violent inci-
dents are committed by family members or friends of the victim And these crimes can be some of the most difficult to prevent Be-
cause of the spiritual nature and open venue of Houses of Worship it can be difficult to deny access to those who may induce vio-
lence For example many Houses of Worship who provide services for abused spouses and children have often had to contend with
their estranged spouses often in violent or potentially violent situations Bitter feelings between family members or friends who at-
tend the same services can become violent Especially if drug or alcohol abuse or mental illness are factors
Every security professional will tell you that there is no such thing as perfect security There is no magic wand that can be guaran-
teed to prevent a horrendous crime such as happened in Dayton Ohio But there are many things that can be done to mitigate the risk
Security awareness and planning are the first steps When staff and members are ldquosecurity awarerdquo they can often see a potential
situation coming and take appropriate action soon enough to prevent it Clergy and lay persons know the congregation and should be
able to sense when situations are abnormal in someonersquos life These are the folks who are the first line o defense
Our ASIS House of Worship program will provide a free security survey that will identify security shortcomings for the facility to
address But just as importantly we can advise on how to form a safetysecurity committee that will be able to develop security poli-
cies appropriate to the particular House of Worship and to begin making folks there ldquosecurity awarerdquo
If you attend or know of a House of Worship that is interested in improving the safety of their facility please urge them to contact
me at jlm99mindspringcom

A job may be handed to you but it takes a lot of effort
and time to build a successful career If your answer to my
original question is that your career is very important to you
then take the first steps in joining ASIS International and the
Phoenix Chapter After you have done that you have to take the
next steps and USE your membership Become active in the

ence you received from your membership in an organization
will highlight your career advancements In todayrsquos world

If you attend or know of a House of Worship that is interested in improving the safety of their facility please urge them to contact
me at jlm99mindspringcom

their estranged spouses often in violent or potentially violent situations Bitter feelings between family members or friends who at-
tend the same services can become violent Especially if drug or alcohol abuse or mental illness are factors
Every security professional will tell you that there is no such thing as perfect security There is no magic wand that can be guaran-
teed to prevent a horrendous crime such as happened in Dayton Ohio But there are many things that can be done to mitigate the risk
Security awareness and planning are the first steps When staff and members are ldquosecurity awarerdquo they can often see a potential

able to sense when situations are abnormal in someonersquos life These are the folks who are the first line o defense

Security awareness and planning are the first steps When staff and members are ldquosecurity awarerdquo they can often see a potential
situation coming and take appropriate action soon enough to prevent it Clergy and lay persons know the congregation and should be
able to sense when situations are abnormal in someonersquos life These are the folks who are the first line o defense

address But just as importantly we can advise on how to form a safetysecurity committee that will be able to develop security poli-
