Volume 106 No. 6 One Nation Under God – The Charity of Christ Urges Us On June 2020
Dear Brother Knights, Sister Columbiettes, Families and Friends:
Due to restrictions it’s been some time since our last meeting; however, I am going to try to hold our
annual Family Rosary at the June 18th meeting at 8 P.M. This meeting is open to all members, their families
and friends. With a turnout of 30-35 people we should be able to practice safe -distancing in the hall. If you
are elderly or have an underlying medical condition please do not attend. If this event needs to be
cancelled, I will advise you by email and text.
On July 4th we may be marching under the Stolzenthaler banner in the Travis Fourth of July Parade. I
have spoken to the Travis Parade Chairperson and they are hopeful that this event will come off. They will
not know until June 3rd or 4th whether the permit has been approved. I will advise you by email and text as
soon as there is some clarity.
Where has the time gone. It seems like yesterday that I was initially installed as Grand Knight and
entrusted with the honor of serving you, the Council and our community. Serving as your Grand Knight is an
honor that I will always cherish, and I thank you for your confidence and trust in me. The past two years
have been busy and together we have accomplished much. Whether it was a food drive, a membership
drive or donations to our Parishes and community organizations we always adhered to the basic principle of
our Order, Charity.
I would like to thank my officers and all the brothers who gave so much of their time to make the last two
years a success. Without you we would have accomplished nothing. I would also like to thank my
Columbiette counterpart, President Debbie Emigholz. It was a pleasure working with you these past two
years.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate the newly elected officers and I wish them all the best. I am sure Steve
and his officers will do a great job. Thank you again and God bless you all.
Fraternally,
Pete Fyfe, Grand Knight

From the Chaplain’s Desk
Dear Brother Knights,
Wishing you all a very Happy Solemnity of Pentecost!
Hope all of you and your Families are doing well by the
grace of God. May is dedicated to the Rosary of our Blessed
Mother Mary and We faithfully have been reciting the Rosary
with our families during this month of May. We know our
Blessed Mother has been praying for the protection
of our families in this difficult time. Mother Mary Pray for us.
Brother Knights the last Sunday of the month of May is
Solemnity of the Pentecost. When the Holy
Spirit came down upon the Apostles. When we recite the
Creed, we profess that the Holy Spirit is the Lord and giver of
life.
The Holy Spirit is our connection with Christ. It is through the
Holy Spirit that we share in Christ’s life. This is one basic gift
the Spirit gives us, a sharing in Christ’s life. As with any life,
our life in Christ is meant to be an active life.
When the Spirit makes us alive in Christ, the Spirit also gives
us gifts that help this life in Christ to flourish. Saint Paul tells
us these are the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Love, Joy, Peace,
Patience, Kindness, Goodness,
Faithfulness, Humility and self-control.
The same Spirit also gives us the gifts to help us live that life
in service of others so that we can put in practice the gifts
God has given us through the Holy Spirit. As we know
Pentecost is the birthday of the Church and Mother Church
teaches us to pray for one another.
Thank God for the gift of faith and life especially keeping us
safe in this pandemic of Coronavirus. Brother Knights Let us
continue to pray for one another and asking the Holy Spirit to
help us offer ourselves and our love to our Heavenly Father
as our Savior Jesus Christ has taught us.
God bless you all and our Beloved homeland United States
of America. Stay safe and healthy.
Faithfully yours.

The Southern KnightCOLUMBUS CLUB NEWS
Dear Brother Knights and Sister Columbiettes,
As this virus crisis continues, I hope this newsletter
finds everyone and their families in good health. My
prayers go out to all those affected by this virus and
their families.
As with all businesses the virus has put a financial
strain on the Club.
As busy as Frank Corvino was the past year and a
half booking parties, he has been just as busy the
past few months with cancellations and
postponements. At this rate, I anticipate that the hall
and picnic grounds will remain quite as a minimum
thru the summer.
The Financial Committee continues to meet monthly
to discuss our current financial status and projecting
our financial status for the upcoming months. We
will continue to meet on a regular basis until our
operations near “normal” activity levels.
We will continue to perform maintenance and
upkeep on the building and picnic grounds in order
to be ready for when this crisis ends. We will not
conduct Board Meetings until this crises ends. I will
keep you posted.
As the summer season starts please take every
effort to keep yourself and your families safe. I look
forward to seeing everyone soon and resuming the
activities that have made our Council and Club the
place for families and friends to gather and have a
good time.
Sincerely,
Jerry Scotti - President

.District Deputy Report
Dear Brothers, I bring you greetings from our Supreme
Knight Carl Anderson and our State Deputy Wally Wych. All
current state officers were reelected at the virtual state
convention that was held at the end of April. I missed the
hospitality room and meeting my fellow Knights from
throughout the State, but the conference was successful.
The C&B program is in suspense. It is hoped that it can be
resumed during the summer.
There were several charitable deeds undertaken by our
councils in the last weeks. It is during emergencies like the
virus that our principles are truly shown. and
We have lost a number of Brothers to the virus, most
recently your own PGK Billy Caputo. I had known Billy from
when I first joined the Knights in 1993. His recollections of
his wrestling career were just wonderful to hear. I remember
asking him about "Ms. Elizabeth" who was the wife/ partner
of the "Macho Man' Randy Savage. He will be missed as
well as Alex Weir and Rick Saccenti of Staten Island
Council. May their souls and the souls of all the faithfully
departed rest in peace. Amen.

Columbiette Corner
Dear Sister Columbiettes, Brother Knights and Friends,
As I write this message, I can’t believe its June already and that my two year term as president of our auxiliary
comes to a close. I hope this finds everyone doing well during this trying time for all of us. We have had two
successful virtual meetings and look forward to our June virtual meeting on June 11th at 7:30. A link and agenda
will be sent several days before the meeting. Keep an eye out for it. We hope you can join us. It would be wonderful
to “see” you!
Special thanks to Marie Fyfe and all the Columbiettes and Knights who donated to our Seaman Society Foster
Care Project. Your donations and gifts will help a most vulnerable group – children in foster care.
As part of our commitment to all Columbiettes, we created an Outreach Committee to call and check on those
Columbiettes who do not have email addresses. We all took several names and called each one to check on them,
share news of our auxiliary and make sure they knew that we were thinking of them. The response was
overwhelmingly positive and everyone we talked to looked forward to chatting a bit. They were grateful that we took
the time to reach out to them. Thank you to Cathy Murphy, Pat Capriglione, Emily Napoli, Marie Fyfe, and
Barbara Keirnan who joined me in calling our sister Columbiettes.
These past several weeks, we have donated meals to the night shift healthcare workers at Staten Island University
Hospital South which include our own Past President Janet Miller. They were extremely grateful. We are so proud
to support these brave and selfless healthcare workers during this most difficult time. God Bless them. Special
thanks to Portobello Café for preparing the delicious food.
At our last meeting, we had our elections. Congratulations to the newly elected officers for the 2020/2021
Columbian year:
Gina Marie Valerio, President
Debbie Emigholz, Past President
Maria Cacioppo, Vice President
Lee McAna, Secretary
Marie Langelotti, Financial Secretary
Patricia Valerio, Interim Treasurer
Emily Napoli, Sentinel
Please support the new officers as you have so graciously supported the current board. We had many wonderful
social events, membership drives and fundraisers. Together we have done so much good for the local community and
those in need. You should all be proud of all that we accomplished by tirelessly working together for the greater good.
Special thanks to the outgoing board for their hard work and dedication: Patricia Valerio, Gina Marie Valerio, Marie
Piro, Jaci Carney, JoAnn Gatto and Marie Fyfe.
Congratulations to Pete Fyfe on a successful two years as Grand Knight, it was a pleasure to be Columbiette
President during your tenure as Grand Knight. We worked well together on many worthy endeavors and greatly
appreciate the Knights’ support.
We usually announce this at our June celebration, but since we are unable to be together, it is my pleasure to
announce that our Columbiette of the Year award winner is Maria Quadrino!! Maria - we are so grateful to you for
your selfless devotion in donating your time and talents to our social nights, we appreciate your generosity and
participation at our fundraisers as well as your efforts in procuring new members for our auxiliary. Congratulations
Maria!!
In closing, the officers and I would like to thank all of you for your support and dedication these past two years. It
has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your officers. We had a wonderful two years of fun, laughter, sharing,
fundraising and fellowship. Stay well, stay safe. May God keep and protect us all as we learn to live life in our “new
normal”. Hope to “see” you on the 11th. God’s Blessings Always, Debbie

The Insurance Corner
The world is slowly beginning to return to the way things were - at least as much as it can, or as much politicians will allow.
In any case, it will likely be months before we know what the new normal looks like. You may have heard the rants of a
diabolical and anti-capitalist historical figure, he said, “there are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks
where decades happens” (Lenin.) It certainly feels that way now. We have crammed decades of changes into these last
several weeks, and it’s hard to know what changes will be permanent and what changes will just fade away.
Not everything is fluid though. I am struck by the resilience of the permanent things - our faith, our fraternity, our families.
I’m sure you’ve seen the tremendous ways in which the Knights of Columbus has proven itself equal yet again to this
current challenge. Whether it was the establishment of the Leave No Neighbor Behind Initiative, or the launch of the
diocesan loan fund, or just the every-day, every-city response of councils across the globe, we have responded as we
always do; swiftly, powerfully, and definitively.
Sure, we’ve had to cancel some things. We’ve had to have virtual meetings and make adjustments in order to maintain
who we are and our commitment in our community. We’ve had to stay a safe distance apart. But our distance hasn’t
diminished our unity, nor has it changed our impact. I continue to be proud to be a part of this great organization -
especially in moments like this. And I know you are too.
Additionally, for me being financially committed to the Knights is such a point of pride. We all need life insurance. We all
need to plan for retirement. We all need to think about and prepare for life’s what-ifs.
If you don’t realize this by now, I feel sorry for the ones you leave behind. Procrastination is your biggest obstacle – failure
to plan becomes a disservice. A Pandemic, who knew? Your current employer will not take care of you when you retire (in
99% of cases) you will be on your own, look into your benefits in retirement, take a close hard look and talk to your union (if
you belong to one.) Government employees don’t become a victim to the thought that you will be taken care of, remember
for most of (“us”) you have no leverage or union voting ability when you retire you become an un-reimbursed expense to
them. Remember what politicians vote for, they can easily vote to take away. Don’t depend on them, please.
But when it comes time to decide who to make those preparations with, and who to choose to buy those products from, we
can choose to spend our money with the company who establishes a multi-million dollar loan funds for Catholic dioceses in
their most desperate time of need, or not will you go another route? We can choose to buy our insurance from a company
who leaves no neighbor behind, or a commercial company who has no real concept of who their neighbor is. We can
prepare for our retirement with a company whose members are - once again - setting an example of true Christian charity
for all to follow, or we can go in a different direction, with a stranger.
I would challenge you, whether you’ve never inquired or it’s been a long time - to take a fresh look at the Knights of
Columbus as a trusted financial partner, and see what products and services we may have that might help you and your
family. When we all start to get back to normal operations, we can meet with you in person or now by video, whichever you
prefer, and we can have stress-free, no-commitment conversation about the possibilities.
It’s a way to further your commitment to all that we stand for, and - at the same time - obtain some much-needed peace of
mind in times like these. A Pandemic, were you prepared? I wasn’t. What would your family do without you or your wife?
Remember Procrastination is your family’s enemy, don’t make me the call that you meant to make!
Vivat Jesus!
